  • On the relationship between the red tide occurrence and the oceanographic factors in the middle coastal area in the South Sea of Korea, the favorable oceanographic conditions for the red tide formation are considered as follows; the calm weather increases sea water temperature in summer and early-fall which the red tide occurs frequently, and the heavy precipitation brings some riverine water to ween: low salinity, high suspended solid, low phosphorus and high nitrogen, respectively. We decided the potential areas in the coastal zones vulnerable to the red tide occurrence based on the limited factors controlling the growth of phytoplankton. By using GIS through the overlap for three subject figures (phosphorus, nitrogen and suspended solids), it was founded that the potential areas are the Yeosu∼Dolsan coast, the Gamak bay, the Namhae coast, the Narodo coast, the Goheung and Deukryang bay. This result has very well coincided to the results of the satellite and in-situ data.

  • Nitrogen implantation process has been applied for improvement of wear resistance of Zircaloy-4 fuel cladding materials. Nitrogen was implanted at 120keV to a total dose range of $1\times 10^{17}$ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$ to $1\times 10^{18}$ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at various temperatures between $270^{\circ}C$ and $671^{\circ}C$. The microstructure changes by nitrogen implantation were analyzed by XRD and AES and wear behavior was evaluated by performing ball-on-disc type wear testing at various loads and sliding velocities under unlubricated condition. Nitrogen implantation produced ZrNx nitride above $3\times 10^{17}$ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$ as well as heavy dislocations, which resluted in an increase in microhardness of the implanted surface of up to 1400 $H_k$ from 200 $H_k$ of unimplanted substrate. Hardness was also found to be increased with increasing implantation temperature up to 1760 $H_k$ at $620^{\circ}C$. The wear resistance was greatly improved as total ion dose and implantation temperature increased. The effective enhancement of wear resistance at high dose and temperature is believed to be due to the significant hardening associated with high degree of precipitation of Zr nitrides and generation of prismatic dislocation loops.

  • An increase in heavy rainfall and floods have been observed over South Korea due to recent abnormal weather. In this perspective, the high-resolution weather forecasts have been widely used to facilitate flood management. However, these models are known to be biased due to initial conditions and topographical conditions in the process of model building. Theretofore, a bias correction scheme is largely applied for the practical use of the prediction to flood management. This study introduces a new mean field bias correction (MFBC) approach for the high-resolution numerical rainfall products, which is based on a Bayesian Kriging model to combine an interpolation technique and MFBC approach for spatial representation of the error. The results showed that the proposed method can reliably estimate the bias correction factor over ungauged area with an improvement in the reduction of errors. Moreover, it can be seen that the bias corrected rainfall forecasts could be used up to 72 hours ahead with a relatively high accuracy.

  • After the heavy precipitation from April 1969 to September 1970, more than 1.359 10$\^$6/㎥ of fresh water was discharged through diversion channel of the Namgang Dam. The sands and muds in the northern Sachon Bay were moved and swept away by the strong southsard flow which was observed to be speedier than five knots. The shellfish culture facility as well as the oysters and bivalves were buried. In Sachon Bay, a southward surface ebb current of approximately one knot stratifies above the northward flow of approximately 0.5 knot, which seems to be similar to the salt wedge estuary. The stratified current is responsible for the breaking of the gill nets and other fishing gears. The salinity of sea water in Chinju Bay decreased remarkably and the abnormal low salinity water lower than 5 was distributed in Sachon Bay. The low salinity water front was observed in eastern Chinju Bay and the Samchonpo Channel, where the salinity was increased from 4.6 to approximately 30 within half a tidal cycle. These caused the oysters and bivalves die, and drove anchovies and octopus out to the sea and prevented them from approaching the bay. The decrease of salinity causes the decrease of density and osmotic pressure of sea water. Turbid water would prevent the sunlight from penetrate into deep layer.

  • We studied a selective recovery condition of vanadium (V) from FALL (Fly Ash Leach Liquor) produced at a fossil fuel power station using heavy oil. By applying a spectroscopy to quantify the V in a sample, we identified a concentration range V interfered by on presence of metals such as Ni, Fe Also, the optimal vanadium precipitation rate according to the amount of 5.0M $NH_3$ loaded to the sample, solution pH and stirring time. As a result of the experiment, the maximum selective recovery ratio of V was achieved to be higher than 91.5% when the stirring duration was less than 1 minute at pH 7.0, and $25^{\circ}C$.

  • Background: Despite its growing significance, studies on the burden of disease associated with natural disasters from the perspective of public health were few. This study aimed at estimating the national burden of disease associated with typhoons and torrential rains in Korea. Methods: During the period of 2002-2012, 11 typhoons and five torrential rains were selected. Mortality and morbidities were defined as accentual death, injury and injury-related infection, and mental health. Their incidences were estimated from National Health Insurance Service. Case-crossover design was used to define the disaster-related excess mortality and morbidity. Disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were directly assessed from excess mortality and morbidity. Results: The burden of disease from typhoons increased with the intensity, with 107.7, 30.6, and 36.6 DALYs per 100,000 per event for strong, moderate, and weak typhoons, respectively. Burden of disease from torrential rains were 56.9, 52.8, and 26.4 DALYs per 100,000 per event for strong, moderate, and weak episodes, respectively. Mental disorders contributed more years lived with disability (YLDs) than did injuries in most cases, but the injury-induced YLDs associated with strong typhoon and torrential rain were higher than those of lower-intensity. The elderly was the most vulnerable to most types of disaster and storm intensities, and males younger than 65 years were more vulnerable to a strong torrential rain event. Conclusion: The intensity of torrential rain or typhoon was the strongest determinant of the burden of disease from natural disasters in Korea. Population vulnerable may vary depending on the nature and strength of the disasters.

  • Magnetic nano-based sorbents have been synthesized for the recovery of two rare earth elements (REE: Nd(III) and Yb(III)). The magnetic nano-based particles are synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal procedure involving co-precipitation under thermal conditions of Fe(III) and Fe(II) salts in the presence of chitosan. The composite magnetic/chitosan material is crosslinked with epichlorohydrin and modified by grafting alanine and serine amine-acids. These materials are tested for the binding of Nd(III) (light REE) and Yb(III) (heavy REE) through the study of pH effect, sorption isotherms, uptake kinetics, metal desorption and sorbent recycling. Sorption isotherms are well fitted by the Langmuir equation: the maximum sorption capacities range between 9 and 18 mg REE $g^{-1}$ (at pH 5). The sorption mechanism is endothermic (positive value of ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$) and contributes to increase the randomness of the system (positive value of ${\Delta}S^{\circ}$). The fast uptake kinetics can be described by the pseudo-second order rate equation: the equilibrium is reached within 4 hours of contact. The sub-micron size of sorbent particles strongly reduces the contribution of resistance to intraparticle diffusion in the control of uptake kinetics. Metal desorption using acidified thiourea solutions allows maintaining sorption efficiency for at least four successive cycles with limited loss in sorption capacity.

  • Yeongdong has frequently suffered from severe snowstorms, which generally give rise to societal and economic damages to the region in winter. In order to understand its mechanism, there has been a long-term measurement campaign, based on the rawinsonde measurements for every snowfall event at Gangneung since 2014. The previous observations showed that a typical heavy snowfall is generally accompanied with northerly or northeasterly flow below the snow clouds, generated by cold air outbreak over the relatively warmer East Sea. An intensive and multi-institutional measurement campaign has been launched in 2019 mainly in collaboration with Gangwon Regional Office of Meteorology and National Institute of Meteorological Studies of Korean Meteorological Administration, with a special emphasis on winter snowfall and spring windstorm altogether. The experiment spanned largely from February to April with comprehensive measurements of frequent rawinsonde measurements at a super site (Gangneung) with continuous remote sensings of wind profiler, microwave radiometers and weather radar etc. Additional measurements were added to the campaign, such as aircraft dropsonde measurements and shipboard rawinsonde soundings. One of the fruitful outcomes is, so far, to identify a couple of cold air damming occurrences, featuring lowest temperature below 1 km, which hamper the convergence zone and snow clouds from penetrating inland, and eventually make it harder to forecast snowfall in terms of its location and timing. This kind of comprehensive observation campaign with continuous remote sensings and intensive additional measurement platforms should be conducted to understand various orographic precipitation in the complex terrain like Yeongdong.

  • The characteristics of the sea breeze were investigated using the wind and temperature data collected from 300-m tower at Boseong from May 2014 to April 2018. Sea breeze day was detected using following criteria: 1) the presence of a clear change in wind direction near sunrise (between 1 hour after sunrise and 5 hours before sunset) and sunset (from 1500 LST to midnight), 2) presence of thermal forcing of sea breeze and 3) no heavy precipitation (rain < $10mm\;d^{-1}$). Sea breeze days occurred on 569 days for 4 years. The monthly distribution of sea breeze day occurrence shows maxima in May and September and minimum in December. The average onset and cessation times of the sea breeze are 0942 LST and 1802 LST, respectively. Although the 10-m wind shows clockwise rotation with time in the afternoon, the observed hodograph does not show an ideal elliptical shape and has different characteristics depending on the upper synoptic wind direction. Vertical structure of sea breeze shows local maximum of wind speed and local minimum of virtual potential temperature at 40 m in the afternoon for most synoptic conditions except for southeasterly synoptic wind ($60^{\circ}{\sim}150^{\circ}$) which is in the same direction as onshore flow. The local minimum of temperature is due to cold advection by sea breeze. During daytime, the intensity of inversion layer above 40 m is strongest in westerly synoptic wind ($240^{\circ}{\sim}330^{\circ}$) which is in the opposite direction to onshore flow.

  • BACKGROUND: Recently, the inflow of nonpoint pollutants into rivers caused by rapid urban and industrialization promotes the proliferation of algae, which causes eutrophication of rivers. This study was conducted to evaluate the seasonal variation of water quality characteristics and cryptomonads growth in the Oncheon River. METHODS AND RESULTS: The water quality and distribution characteristics of cryptomonads in the Oncheon River were investigated monthly for 12 months from January 2021. The cell number of cryptomonads was intensively developed in January-April, and it decreased sharply in the summer with heavy rainfall. In particular, cryptomonads moved to the downstream side of the river depending on the time, and as a result, significant differences were shown for each investigation point. The Korean trophic state index (TsiKO) in Oncheon River was classified as eutrophy all year round, indicating that cryptomonads can grow year-round. Distribution characteristics of cryptomonads in Oncheon River showed high correlations with DO (r=0.678), BOD (r=0.826) and chlorophyll-a (r=0.613) in water. CONCLUSION(S): In order to reduce cryptomonads in the Oncheon River, it is judged that a complex countermeasure considering the residence time, insolation and precipitation along with water quality factors is required.
