  • Heavy metal concentration of Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb were analysed from seaweeds (Ulva pertusa, Sargassum thunbergii, Caulacanthus okamurae), sediments and seawater at the two experimental sites of Daebul and Sabjin industrial complex in Mokpo coastal area with a control site (Heugsando). Highest values of heavy metals were found at two experimental sites influencing by various pollution sources such as industrial drains, sewage and harbours. In contrast, the lowest concentrations was observed at the control site without any pollution source. The concentration levels of accumulated heavy metals were in the following order: seaweeds > sediments > seawater. Similar spatial distribution patterns were observed at the seaweeds, sediments and seawater for the highest mean values of the different heavy metals. This result show that seaweeds could be used as a biomonitors of heavy metals at coastal region.

  • In this study, we investigated the various adsorption factors influencing the adsorption of heavy metal ions based on the study of the composition and physicochemical properties of scoria dispersed throughout Jeju Island. Analysis of the distribution characteristics of scoria samples collected from five areas of Jeju showed that reddish-brown-colored scoria were predominant. Analysis of scoria collected from Jeju Island showed that its mineral components are ordered as follows: SiO2 > Al2O3 > Fe2O3 > CaO and MgO. The experimental data did not show a linear relationship in the pseudo-first-order adsorption kinetics. In contrast, a pseudo-second-order model yielded a positive linear relationship, and this model was subsequently used. It could be concluded based on an intraparticle diffusion model indicating linear relationships that the capture of metal ions on scoria is dominated by the primary adsorption step.

  • Atmospheric particulate matters (A. P. M. ) were collected on quartz-fiber filters from March 1985 to May 1986, using the Andersen high-volume air sampler and contents of six heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb Ni) in the A. P. M. were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. These heavy metals were divided into the three groups with respect to their particle size distribution. Fe and Mn were mainly associated with coarse particles (diameter > 2.0 $\mu$m), but Pb and Ni were related fine particles (diameter < 2.0 $\mu$m). Cu and Zn had mized size distributions in both of them. In the seasonal variation of heavy metals, the contents of Fe and Mn in spring and Ni and Pb in winter were higher than any other season. There were high mutual correlation between Fe and Mn coarse particles, and between Pb and Ni in fine particles.

  • The aim of this study was to analyze the local distribution of the heavy metal concentration in Daegu and Ulsan which were divided into the residual areas, the traffic dense areas and the industrial areas. The Inductively Coupled Plasma(ICP) was used to analyze heavy metals, such as As, Cr, Hg, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu and minor metals, such as Fe, Si, Mg, Ca, AI, Na, K. The results of this analysis showed that the content of heavy metals which was classified by districts in Daegu and Ulsan was the highest in the industrial areas followed by the traffic dense areas and the residual areas. Compared to the level of heavy metals of national and local soil survey network in 2003, contamination of heavy metals in Daegu was lower than national average. However, the content of Cd, As, Zn in Ulsan was respectively 13.38 times, 472 times and 2.65 times higher than national average contamination. In addition, compared to the soil pollution level of the environmental protection law, contamination of all areas in Daegu was lower. But the content of As at the industrial areas in Ulsan was 10.71 times higher than standard of soil pollution and 4.28 times higher than standard of measures against soil contamination.

  • This study was performed to investigate the contents of six heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) with respect to the particle sizes and depths in sediment collected at nine sites of the lower Kumho river. The mean Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn contents in sediment of all sites ranged from 1.59~5.32 mg/kg, 17.4~301.7 mg/kg, 23.2~399.9 mg/kg, 9.48~116.8 mg/kg, 31.1~294.1 mg/kg and 74.2~964.3 mg/kg, respectively. The highest heavy metal contents was generally found to be Zn and lowest was Cd. The mean contents of heavy metal by particle sizes (1.0~0.5, 0.5~ 0.25, <0.25 mm)was the highest in particle sizes less than 0.25 mm, but the coefficients of variation was lowest in particle sizes less than 0.25 mm. Mean contents and coefficient of variation by depths (0~5 cm, 5~10 cm, 10~15 cm) were generally found to be higher in the upper parts of sediment than in the lower parts of sediment. Organic substances were found to be higher as the particle sizes become more small. Moreover, contents of heavy metal increased with the amounts of organic substances in sediment.

  • This paper presents an attempt to determine natural background levels of heavy metals which could be used for assessing heavy metal contamination. For this study, a large archive dataset of heavy metal concentration (Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn) for more than 900 surface sediment samples from various Korean coastal environments was newly compiled. These data were normalized for aluminum (grain-size normalizer) concentration to isolate natural factors from anthropogenic ones. The normalization was based on the hypothesis that heavy metal concentrations vary consistently with the concentration of aluminum, unless these metals are of anthropogenic origin. So, the samples (outliers) suspected of receivingany anthropogenic input were removed from regression to ascertain the "background" relationship between the metals and aluminum. Identification of these outliers was tested using a model of predicted limits at 95%. The process of testing for normality (Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test) and selection of outliers was iterated until a normal distribution was achieved. On the basis of the linear regression analysis of the large archive (please check) dataset, background levels, which are applicable to heavy metal assessment of Korean coastal sediments, were successfully developed for Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn. As an example, we tested the applicability of this baseline level for metal pollution assessment of Masan Bay sediments.

  • In order to investigate the level of heavy metal contamination and the seasonal variation of metal concentrations in soils and sediments influenced by past mining activities, tailings, soil and sediment samples were collected from the Hwacheon mine in Korea. The main pollution sources in this mine site are suggested as tailings and mine waste rocks. Elevated levels of Cd, Pb and Zn were found in soils and sediments. In a study of seasonal variation on the heavy metals in soils and sediments, heavy metals were higher enriched collected from before rainy season ($2^{nd}$ sampling) than after rainy season ($1^{st}$ sampling). Also, in order to estimate the microbial effects on Cd speciation in sediments, bacteria which can adsorb Cd was isolated and Cd adsorption characteristics of isolated bacteria in Cd solution was evaluated. The Cd bioremoval efficiency in Cd solution (5 ppm) by bacteria was more than $90\%$. Bioremoval efficiency in single metal solution was higher than that in mixed metal solution of Pb and Zn.

  • In order to investigate water pollution of heavy metals in the Nagdong Estuary, samples were collected five times from August 1978 to April 1979 every other month, and analyzed for Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results showed no significant heavy metal pollution in most parts of the studied areas, except near the outfalls of the Sasang Industrial Complex. In general, the heavy metal contents were higher in the dry season than in the rainy season due to the dilution effect of river water flow. Distribution of heavy metals in the dissolved and the particulate fractions were also investigated.

  • This study examined the distribution of airborne metals concentrations and conducted a risk assessment in PM-10 in Gwangju from 2014 to 2022. There were a total of six points, and the concentration of heavy metals at each point was highest in the order of Pyeong-dong(1.5472 ㎍/m3 ) > Nongseong-dong(1.2093 ㎍/m3 ) > Geonguk-dong(1.0100 ㎍/m3 ) > Duam-dong(0.9684 ㎍/m3 ) > Seo-dong(0.9515 ㎍/m3 ) > Nodae-dong(0.8321 ㎍/m3 ). In recent years, the concentration of heavy metals in the atmosphere has generally risen, accompanied by an increase in heavy metals in the soil. The average seasonal concentrations were in the following order: spring(1.4448 ㎍/m3 ) > winter(1.2939 ㎍/m3 ) > fall(0.8303 ㎍/m3 ) > summer (0.5928 ㎍/m3 ). The atmospheric heavy metals most correlated with PM-10 were Ca(0.69), Fe(0.62), Al(0.62) and Mg(0.60). Within the acceptable risk level (1.0E-06) set in this study, heavy metals in the atmosphere were found to have the most excess cancer risk, and the integrated non-cancer risk was as low as 1 or less.
