  • Purpose: Utilizing air thermal energy during over-heated time in the greenhouse is a necessary component to save greenhouse heating costs for nighttime. However, there is no practical way to implement the related principles. Methods: In this study, a heating and cooling system which utilizes the surplus air thermal energy in a greenhouse was developed. Available air thermal energy and heating load for this experimental glasshouse were estimated based on temperature conditions of the plant growth and weather data. Results: Estimated values were 400 MJ/day for maximum surplus air thermal energy and 340 MJ/day for maximum heating energy which were target values of the design as well. The system consists of a heat pump, fan-coil units and heat storage tanks which are divided into low and high temperature tanks. Moreover, a new control logic was developed for surplus air thermal energy utilization. Conclusions: This paper explains the details of conceptual design process of the system. Results of test operations showed that the developed system performed the recovery and supply of the thermal energy according to design purposes.

  • The purpose of this study was to clarify precautions during the design and operation phases for energy reduction in a public office building. To check the operation status of the building, we measured the indoor temperature and humidity in the office space of the building installed central heating and cooling systems. And we analyzed these data and annual BEMS data. As a result, we found six problems related to decreasing system efficiency. Based on these, we presented the information to improve the efficiency of the system from the design and operation phase. Also, we present the need for a system to support the decision-making of operational managers in real-time for the energy efficiency of the building.

  • Direct containment heating (DCH) is one of the potential factors leading to early containment failure. DCH is closely related to safety analysis and containment performance evaluation of nuclear power plants. In this study, a DCH prediction program was developed to analyze the DCH loads of containment vessel. The phenomenological model of debris dispersal, metal oxidation reaction, debris-atmospheric heat transfer and hydrogen jet burn was established. Code assessment was performed by comparing with several separate effect tests and integral effect tests. The comparison between the predicted results and experimental data shows that the program can predict the key parameters such as peak pressure, temperature, and hydrogen production in containment well, and for most comparisons the relative errors can be maintained within 20%. Among them, the prediction uncertainty of hydrogen production is slightly larger. The analysis shows that the main sources of the error are the difference of time scale and the oxidation of cavity debris.

  • Recently many people have been troubled with perennial allergic rhinitis. But there is no way to cure for root of it until now. Therefore many medical treatments to release symptoms of perennial allergic rhinitis have been researched. One of them is localized aerosol hyperthermia, which injects $42^{\circ}C{\sim}43^{\circ}C$ vapor into nasal cavity. Vapor inhalator for localized aerosol hyperthermia has been researched in foreign country. But on the other hand it has rarely been researched inside of the country. Since most clinics and hospitals have used imported vapor inhalator, it is needed to develop domestic vapor inhalator. In the paper, a superior vapor inhalator compared to former developed one is developed. The superiority of it comes from direct-vapor heating instead of water heating to control vapor temperature. The developed vapor inhalator has shorter rising time than the existing one because of direct-vapor heating. Furthermore vapor generation part and control part of the vapor inhalator developed as one piece mock-up. It enables the vapor inhalator to have smaller size. Many laboratory tests are performed and compared to existing results to prove its performance.

  • The earlier studies on the fire resistance performance of woods used as building materials have focused on confirming combustion characteristics of fire retardant or flame resistant treated wood. In this paper, to confirm internal temperature changes closely related to pyrolysis of woods exposed to the flame, heating experiments were conducted in a heating furnace according to the standard heating temperature curves after Douglas-fir, which is widely used as structural materials, was treated with a flame resistant solution and flame retardant paint. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the thermal diffusion inside the wood has decreased when the wood was treated with the flame resistant solution. However, in high temperature, the flame resistant effect could not be expected due to the peeling of the coating in the case of the flame resistant paint treated wood. Therefore, it can be considered that it is more effective to use the flame resistant solution which penetrates in to the inside of the wood than flame resistant paint which forms the coating on the surface of the wood in order to enhance the flame resistance effect on the thick wood.

  • To establish the exclusive role of hydrogen on burst behaviour of Zircaloy-4 during loss-of-coolant accident transients, an extensive single-rod burst tests were conducted on both unirradiated as-received and hydrogenated Zircaloy-4 cladding tubes at different heating rates and internal overpressures. The visual observations of cladding tubes during bursting as well as post-burst are presented in detail to understand the effect of hydrogen concentration, heating rate, and internal pressure. Impact of hydrogen on burst parameters-burst stress, burst strain, burst temperature-during loss-of-coolant accident transients are compared and discussed. Rupture at multiple locations for hydrogenated cladding at lower internal pressure and higher heating rate is reported for the very first time. A novel burst criterion accounting hydrogen concentration in nuclear fuel cladding is proposed.

  • Pyrolysis of high density polyethylene(HDPE) was carried out to find the effects of temperature and time on the pyrolysis. The starting temperature and activation energy of HDPE pyrolysis increased with increasing heating rate. In general, conversion and liquid yield continuously increased with pyrolysis temperature and pyrolysis time. This tendency is very sensitive with pyrolysis time, especially at 45$0^{\circ}C$. Pyrolysis temperature has more influence on the conversion than pyrolysis time. Each liquid product formed during pyrolysis was classified into gasoline, kerosene, light oil and wax according to the distillation temperature based on the petroleum product quality standard of Korea Petroleum Quality Inspection Institute. As a result, the amount of liquid products produced during HDPE pyrolysis at 45$0^{\circ}C$ was in the order of light oil > wax > kerosene > gasoline, and at 475$^{\circ}C$ and 50$0^{\circ}C$, it was wax > light > oil > kerosene > gasoline.

  • The experimental study has been done for two kinds of pelletized RDFs to Investigate the carbonization effect to the chlorine concentrations, the heating value and the yield of Produced char in variable conditions of the carbonizing temperature and reaction time. One(RDF-1) is made of 100% wasted plastics and the other(RDF-2) is made of 60% wasted paper with 40% wasted plastics. The screw type carbonizer heated Indirectly by oil burner was used for the experiment and RDF feeding rate was 3kg/hr. The carbonizing temperature was 300, 350 400 and $45^{\circ}C$ and the reaction tine was 5, 10 and 15 minutes respectively. As the increase of carbonizing reaction time and temperature, the chlorine reduction rate was increased and oppositely the yield of char was decreased At the temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ and reaction time of 10 minutes the chlorine reduction rate was 60% and the char yield rate was 80% for the RDF-1 and those of RDF-2 were 80% and 75%, respectively. Additional activation experiment to the char produced from RDF-2 was done in the activation reactor by hot steam supply. As the increase of activation time the iodine number was increased. At the activation time of 20 minutes the iodine number was 552mg/g and the yield of activated carbon was 16%.
