Nondestructive evaluation for material health monitoring is important in aerospace industries. Composite laminates are exposed to heat cyclic loading and humid environment depending on flight conditions. Cyclic heat loading and moisture absorption may lead to material degradation such as matrix breaking, debonding, and delamination. In this paper, the moisture absorption ratio was investigated by measuring the Lamb wave velocity. The composite laminates were manufactured and subjected to different thermal aging cycles and moisture absorption. For various conditions of these cycles, not only changes in weight and also ultrasonic wave velocity were measured, and the Lamb wave velocity at various levels of moisture on a carbon-epoxy plate was investigated. Results from the experiment show a linear correlation between moisture absorption ratio and Lamb wave velocity at different thermal fatigue stages. The presented method can be applied as an alternative solution in the online monitoring of composite laminate moisture levels in commercial flights.
Now a days, frequency of abnormally high temperatures like heat wave by global warming and climate change is increasing constantly and the number of patient with heat related illness are jumping rapidly. In this study, we chose the case day for the heat wave in Busan area(Busan and Yangsan), 2013 which it was the most hottest year during 21th century. And then, we analysed the weather condition using automatic synoptic observing system(ASOS) data. Also, four indices, heat index(HI), wet bulb globe temperature(WBGT), Man-ENvironment heat EXchange model(MENEX)'s results like Physiological subjective temperature(PST), Physiological strain(PhS), were calculated to evaluate the thermal comfort and stress quantitatively. However, thermal comfort was different as the each station and thermal comfort index during same time. Busan's thermal indices (HI: hot, WBGT: sweltering, PST: very hot, PhS: very hot) indicated relatively higher than Yansan's (HI: very hot, WBGT: sweltering, PST: very hot, PhS: sweltering). It shows that Busan near coast is relatively more comfortable than Yangsan located in inland.
This study aims to assess the impact of the hot summer weather on daily mortality in Busan. Daily total all-caused mortality in the entire population in Busan has been examined during 1991-2005. The daily deaths were standardized to account for the long-term trend in mortality and their seasonal and weekly cycles. We found the net increase (about 8.2%) of excess deaths during the extraordinary heat wave period in July of 1994. It corresponds to the excess deaths of 109.5 during the month. The abnormality of temperature extremes in July of 1994 and their impacts on human health were also investigated. Unusual heat wave appeared in the first ten days in July of 1994. The excess deaths are likely to be attributable to the record-breaking heat waves. The result suggests that unusual early heat waves would be dangerous, even for inhabitants who live in an acclimated region to the heat waves such as Busan.
Heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of fin-and-tube heat exchangers having sine wave fins and oval tubes were investigated. Oval tubes having an aspect ratio of 0.6 were made, by deforming 12.7 mm round tubes. Twelve samples, having different fin pitch and tube row, were tested. The effect of fin pitch on the j and f factors was negligible. The effect of the tube row on the j factor, however, was different from that of common fin-and-tube heat exchangers having plain fins and round tubes. The highest j factor was obtained for a two-row configuration, while the lowest one was obtained for a one-row configuration. A possible reason was attributed to the flow mixing characteristics of the sine wave channel of the present geometry. Comparison with a plain fin-and-tube heat exchanger having 15.88 mm O. D. round tube reveals that the present oval fin-and-tube heat exchanger shows generally superior thermal performance, except for the one-row configuration.
Given the significant social and economic impact caused by heat waves, there is a pressing need to predict them with high accuracy and reliability. In this study, we analyzed the real-time forecast data from six models constituting the Subseasonal-to-Seasonal (S2S) prediction project, to elucidate the key mechanisms contributing to the prediction of the recent record-breaking Korean heat wave event in 2018. Weekly anomalies were first obtained by subtracting the 2017-2020 mean values for both S2S model simulations and observations. By comparing four Korean heat-wave-related indices from S2S models to the observed data, we aimed to identify key climate processes affecting prediction accuracy. The results showed that superior performance at predicting the 2018 Korean heat wave was achieved when the model showed better prediction performance for the anomalous anticyclonic activity in the upper troposphere of Eastern Europe and the cyclonic circulation over the Western North Pacific (WNP) region compared to the observed data. Furthermore, the development of upper-tropospheric anticyclones in Eastern Europe was closely related to global warming and the occurrence of La Niña events. The anomalous cyclonic flow in the WNP region coincided with enhancements in Madden-Julian oscillation phases 4-6. Our results indicate that, for the accurate prediction of heat waves, such as the 2018 Korean heat wave, it is imperative for the S2S models to realistically reproduce the variabilities over the Eastern Europe and WNP regions.
Low Rayleigh number thermal convection in a fluid layer confined between two-infinite horizontal walls kept at spatially sinusoidal temperature distributions, T_L=T_m+\Delta T\sin \kappax,\;T_U=T_m+\Delta T\sin(\kappax-\beta)$, is theoretically investigated by a regular perturbation expansion method. For small wave numbers, an upright cell is formed between the two walls at $\beta$=0. The cell is tilted, as the phase difference increases, and a flow with tow counter-rotating eddies occurs at $\beta=\pi$. when the wave number is large, isolated eddies are formed near the lower and upper walls, for all the phase differences. There exists a wave number at which maximum heat transfer rate at the walls occurs, at each of the phase differences. And the wave number increases with increase of the phase difference. for a fixed wave number, the heat transfer rate decrease with increase of the phase difference.
This paper deals with the evaluation of two definite integrals involving spheroidal wave function, H-function of two variables, and the generalized hypergeometric function. Also, an expansion formula for the product of generalized hypergeometric function and the H-function of two variables has been obtained. Since the H-function of two variables, spheroidal wave functions, and the generalized hypergeometric function may be transformed into a number of higher transcendental functions and polynomials, the results obtained in this paper include some known results as their particular cases. As an application of such results, a problem of heat conduction in a non-homogenous bar has been solved by using the generalized Legendre transform [9].
It is a critical task to keep the ventilation system working in a proper and efficient manner in large multi-storey buildings, and the enthalpy exchanger is becoming an increasingly important part of the ventilation system by playing the function of channeling heat and moisture. We present a computational study on the heat transfer performance of the cross-flow enthalpy exchanger, which is in large use for residential buildings. The ducts are considered whose cross-sectional shapes resemble triangle and longitudinal centerline a cosine wave. It is shown that, as the cross-sectional shape departs from triangle, the heat transfer performance of the duct tends to deteriorate. Also, applying the wave-like shape to the longitudinal centerline of the duct increases the rate of heat transfer and the applied pressure-gradient at the same time. The origin of the performance variations in the cases considered are quantitatively analyzed and discussed.
Purpose: Urban heat island and Heat wave raise urban temperature and create damage of human life. Growing up as quantitative supply to solve shortage of housing, Urban residential area in Korea have a low rate of nature surface and heavily population makes temperature rise. Most houses in the declined residential area are multi-family rental housing and have many factors congesting housing environment such as narrow in-between space, outdoor staircases, walls and semi-basement floor, which make thermal environment getting worse. Most of the residents in this area are small tenants vulnerable to climate change adaptation, This damage is expected to be even greater. This study focus on multiple dwelling in urban residential area prone to temperature rise and draw temperature adaption method that can apply to multiple dwelling.
