  • Constant temperature hot wire air flow meter for automobiles requires temperature compensation system because hot wire output signal is sensitive to ambient temperature variations as well as fluid velocity. The objectives of the present study are to design an air flow meter circuit which is capable of compensating the hot wire output signal for ambient temperature variations and to investigate the mechanism of such temperature compensation. This circuit is composed of platinum hot wire, platinum resistor, two variable resistors, a constant resistor and a DC-amplifier. In particular, by simply replacing a constant resistor in one of the bridge arms of the conventional circuit with platinum resistor and a variable resistor for the purpose of temperature compensation, the deviation of output signal with respect to ambient temperature variations between 27deg. C 70deg. C could be reduced to less than 2.5% for mass flow rate and to less than 5% for velocity respectively. The mechanism of temperature compensation against ambient temperature variations was explained by means of measuring the heat transfer coefficient with hot wire temperature variations and analyzing and analyzing conventional empirical equations qualitatively.

  • The study presents structural integrity assessment of ductility degradation of a baffle former assembly by performing finite element analysis considering real loading conditions and stress triaxiality. Variations of fracture strain curves of type 304 austenitic stainless steel with stress triaxiality are derived based on the previous study results. Temperature distributions during normal operation such as heat-up, steady state, and cool-down are calculated via finite element temperature analysis considering gamma heating and heat convection with reactor coolant. Variations of stress and strain state during long operation period are also calculated by performing sequentially coupled temperature-stress analysis. Fracture strain is derived by using the fracture curve and the stress triaxility. Finally, variations of ductility degradation damage indicator with the fracture strain and the equivalent inelastic strain are investigated. It is found that maximum value of the ductility degradation damage index continuously increases and becomes 0.4877 at 40 EFPYs. Also, the maximum value occurs at top and middle inner parts of the baffle former assembly before and after 20 EFPYs, respectively.

  • The objective of the present study is the depth and layout optimizations of a single layer, high level radioactive waste repository in a discontinuous rock mass with special joint set arrangements. A single layer repository model, considering variations in the repository depths, pitches, and tunnel spacings, is used to analyze the thermomechanical interaction behavior. It is assumed that the repository is constructed in saturated granite with joints; the PWR spent fuel in a disposal canister is installed in a deposition drift which is then sealed with compacted bentonite; and the backfill material is filled in the repository tunnel. The decay heat generated by the high level radioactive wastes governs the thermomechanical behavior of the near field rock mass of the repository. The temperature and displacement behavior of the repository is influenced more by the pitch variations than the tunnel spacing and repository depth. However, the stress behavior is influenced more by the repository depth variations than the pitch and tunnel spacing. For the final selection of the tunnel spacing, pitch, and repository depth, other aspects such as the nuclide migration through a groundwater flow path, construction costs, operation costs, and so on should be considered.

  • This paper presents a mathematical model for predicting the frost behavior formed on heat exchanger fins, considering fin heat conduction under frosting condition. The model is composed of air-side, the frost layer, and fin region, and they are coupled to the frost layer. The frost behavior is more accurately predicted with fin heat conduction considered (Case A) than with a constant fin surface temperature assumed (Case B). The results indicate that the frost thickness and heat transfer rate for Case B are over-predicted in most regions of the fin, as compared to those for Case A. Also, for Case A, the maximum frost thickness varies little with the fin length variations, and the extension of the fin length over 30 mm contributes insignificantly to heat transfer.

  • The annual variations of the urban heat island in Busan is investigated using surface temperature data measured at 3 automatic weather stations(AWSs) for the 5 years period, 2006 to 2010. Similar to previous studies, the intensity of the urban heat island is calculated using the temperature difference between downtown(Busanjin, Dongnae) and suburb(Gijang). The maximum hourly mean urban heat island are $1.4^{\circ}C$ at Busanjin site, 2300LST and $1.6^{\circ}C$ at Dongnae site, 2100LST. It occurs more often at Dongnae than Busanjin. Also the maximum hourly mean urban heat island appears in November at both sites. The urban heat island in Busan is stronger in the nighttime than in the daytime and decreases with increasing wind speed, but it is least developed in summer. Also it partly causes the increasement of nighttime PM10 concentration.

  • Tank track rubbers, which undergo dynamic stresses and strains under various road conditions, leads to a result of considerable internal temperature rise due to the heat generation. Since rubber materials are not fully elastic, a part of the mechanical energy is converted into heat because of the hysteresis loss. Heat generation without adequate heat dissipation leads to heat build-up, i.e. internal temperature rise which, if excessive, exerts a bad influence upon the performance and the life of the tank track rubbers. The purpose of this paper is to predict temperature distributions of the rubber components off tank track subjected to complex dynamic loads under various read conditions. In steady state analysis temperature fields are displayed in contour shapes, and in unsteady analysis the temperature variations of some important nodes are represented graphically with respect to the running time of the tank.

  • An experimental study of heat transfer from hot flat surface to water sprays was conducted in high temperature region. Heat transfer measurements for hot flat surface were made by 4 sheathed C-A thermocouples. Droplets volume flux were also measured-independently at a position in spray field. The test conditions included variations in droplets volume flux, subcooling of cooling water of $1.565\times10^{-3} to 14.089\times10^{-3}m^3/m^2s and 80 to $20^{\circ}C$ respectively. The effects of inclination angle on heat transfer were investigated and changes in inclination angle of hot flat surface affected heat transfer coefficients of high temperature region.

  • During combustion process in a diesel engine radiation heat transfer is the same order of magnitude as the convection heat transfer. An approximation of heat and momentum source distributions is applied at a level consistent with those used in modelling the soot distribution and the turbulence instead of modelling the fuel spray and the chemical kinetics. This paper illustrates a use of the third order spherical harmonics approximation to the radiative transfer equation and delta-Eddington approximation to the scattering phase function for droplets in the flow. Results are obtained numerically by a time marching finite difference scheme. This study aims to compare heat transfer with convection heat transfer and to investigate the importance of scattering by fuel droplets and of accounting for spatial variations in the extinction coefficient on the radiative heat flux distributions at the walls of a disc shaped diesel engine.

  • This paper is a study on the model of simultaneous heat and mass transfer process in the absorption of refrigerant vapor into a lithium bromide solution of water-cooled vertical plate absorber. The model can predict temperature and concentration profiles as well as the effect of Reynolds number on them. Also. the variations of the absorption heat and mass fluxes. and the heat and mass transfer coefficients have been investigated. The numerical result shows that the interface temperature and concentration decrease as film Reynolds number does. The absorption heat and mass fluxes, and the heat and mass transfer coefficients get their maximum values adjacent to the inlet solution. Analyses on a constant wall temperature condition have been also carried out to exam the reliability of the present numerical method by comparing to previous investigations.

  • This is an experimental study to identify the performance of air-to-air rotary heat exchanger with polyurethane foam matrix. The experimental apparatus including heating AHU(Air Handling Unit), cooling AHU, sensor chamber, and heat exchanger testing unit was designed and manufactured in this study. The performance of heat exchanger with porous polyurethane foam matrix was tested with variations of the density and the thickness of matrix, regulating the wind velocity and the rotational speed of matrix. The actual heat recovery effectiveness, air leakage rate, and pressure drop of heat exchanger were measured and analyzed.
