  • Fluid flow and heat transfer in horizontal ducts are strongly coupled with large changes in thermodynamic and transport properties near the critical region as well as the gravity force. Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate convective heat transfer in horizontal rectangular ducts for water near the thermodynamic critical point. Convective heat transfer characteristics, including velocity, temperature, and the properties as well as local heat transfer coefficients along the ducts are compared with the effect of proximity on the critical point. When there is flow acceleration because of a density decrease, convective heat transfer characteristics in the ducts show transition behavior between liquid-like and gas-like phases. There is a large variation in the local heat transfer coefficient distributions at the top, side, and bottom surfaces, and close to the pseudocritical temperature, a peak in the heat transfer coefficient distribution resulting from improved turbulent transport is observed. The Nusselt number distribution depends on pressure and duct aspect ratio, while the Nusselt number peak rapidly increases as the pressure approaches the critical pressure. The predicted Nusselt number is also compared with other heat transfer correlations.

  • The fin-tube heat exchanger being used for industrial boiler, radiator, refrigerator has been conducted in various studies to improve it's performance. In this study, the characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop was theoretically analyzed according to longitudinal pitch, location of vortex generator, bump phase and number of the tube surface about the plain fin-tube heat exchanger. The boundary condition for the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis applied with the SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model assumed as the tube surface temperature of 333 K, the inlet air temperature of 423-438 K and the inlet air velocity of 1.5~2.1 m/s. The analysis results indicated that the heat transfer coefficient is not affected highly by the longitudinal pitch, and the heat transfer characteristics was more favorable when the vortex generator was located in front of the tube. Also the bump phase of the tube surface indicated that circle type was more appropriate than serrated type and triangle type in the characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop, and the sixteen's bump phase of circle type was most favorable.

  • Numerical analysis and experimental study are performed to investigate the effect of heat load and operating temperature on the thermal performance of several variable conductance heat pipe (VCHP) with screen meshed wick. The heat pipe is designed in 200 screen meshes, 500 mm length and 12.7 mm outer diameter tube of copper, water (4.8 g) is used as working fluid and nitrogen as non-condensible gas (NCG). Heat pipe used in this study has evaporator, condenser and adiabatic section, respectively. Analysis values and experimental data of wall temperature distribution along axial length are presented for heat transport capacity, condenser cooling water temperature change, degrees of an inclination angle and operating temperature. These analysis and experiment give the follow findings: For the same charging mass of working fluid, the operating temperature of heat pipe becomes to be high with the increasing of charging mass of NCG. When the heat flux at the evaporator section increases, the vapor pressure in the pipe rises and consequently compresses the NCG to the condenser end part and increases the active length of the condenser. From previous process, it is found out we can control the operating temperature effectively and also the analysis and experimental results are relatively coincided well.

  • The effects of simetryne on light induced electron transport and phosphorylation in isolated spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) chloroplasts were investigated in comparison with sencor and DCMU. Simetryne, like sencor and DCMU, completely, inhibited PSII electron transport and phosphoryltion with 10-6 M treatment but did not inhibit PSI electron transport. Interference with the electron transport pathway was evidenced by the greater sensitivity of oxygen evolution and uptake than phosphorylation. The following order of decreasing inhibitory effectiveness was exihibited; DCMU>simetryne>sencor. The photoacoustic technique was also used to monitor the relative photosynthetic activity in the leaves treated with the herbicides (simetryne, sencor or DCMU) in vivo and in vitro. Photoacoustic measurements on intact leaves provide quantitative information on two related aspects of the photosynthetic process, namely, photochemical energy storage and oxygen evolution. The relative photoacoustic signal of leaves treated with the herbicides showed low level in 21 Hz, but high level in 380 Hz and on isolated chloroplasts (both 21 Hz and 380 Hz) in comparison with that of the untreated leaves. These results suggest that some of photochemical energy is converted into the heat owing to the inhibition of electorn transport pathway by the herbicides.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop heat transfer analysis program of heat pipe elements and design a revolving heat pipe exchanger by the performance experiment of hot air production by means of middle-temperature waste heat. Experimental variables are the revolution per minute, normal velocity of inlet air and the temperature of waste heat. The revolving heat exchanger has designed as $2^{\circ}$ in inclination angle of heat pipe bundle and as 20% in working fluid quantity and as water in working fluid. Experimental value of the total heat transfer coefficient was $20w/m^2-^{\circ}C$

  • Numerical analysis of turbulent flow in three-dimensional channel with V-shaped ribs extruded on both walls has been carried out. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes are calculated for analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Computational results for heat transfer rate show good agreements with experimental data.

  • Twenty sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs) have provided valuable experience in design, licensing, and operation. This paper summarizes the important safety criteria and safety guidelines of intermediate sodium systems, steam generators, decay heat removal systems and associated construction materials and in-service inspection. The safety criteria and guidelines provide a sufficient framework for design and licensing, in particular by new entrants in SFRs.
