  • Effluent ground water overflow in deep and broad ground space building. Temperature of effluent ground water is in $12{\sim}20^{\circ}C$ annually and the quality of that water is as good as living water. Therefore if the flow rate of effluent ground water is sufficient as source of heat pump, that is good heat source and heat sink of heat pump. Effuent ground water contain the thermal energy of surrounding ground. So this is a new application of ground source heat pump. In this study open type and c lose type heat pump system using effluent ground water was installed and tested for it church building with large and deep ground space. The effluent flow rate of this building is $800{\sim}1000$ ton/day. The heat pump capacity is 5RT each. The heat pump cooling COP is $4.9{\sim}5.2$ for the open type and $4.9{\sim}5.7$ for close type system. The system cooling COP is $3.2{\sim}4.5$ for open type and $3.8{\sim}4.2$for close type system. This performance is up to that of BHE type ground source heat pump.

  • Recently, the use of renewable energy has been increased due to growing concern on the energy-saving at buildings and the reduction of $CO_2$ emission. In the field of architecture, to reduce the energy consumption of heating, cooling and hot water supply, heat pump systems with renewable energy has been developed and used in various applications. However, there have been many of researches on the large-scale commercial heat pump systems, but the research and the field application of a compact heat pump system is rare. Therefore, in order to develop the compact heat pump for the small-scale residential building, this study conducted the performance test and feasibility study for a hybrid heat pump using the heat source of air, solar and ground. In the results of experiments through a trial product, the average COP of cooling mode with ground heat source was 4.75, and it of heating mode was 4.03. Furthermore, the average COP of cooling mode with air heat source was 2.60, and it of heating mode was 2.92. Finally, payback period of the system was calculated as 9.2 years.

  • In Korea, air source heat pump system is less efficient than conventional heat source facilities, such as ground source, river water, because the air temperature in winter season is so low that COP of air source heat pump system drops below 3.0. Therefore, the study on the application of heat pump heating and cooling systems is crucial for the efficient popularization of heat pump. In this work, we present the dynamic analysis of energy consumption for the large resident building by heat resistance-capacitance method. The system simulation of water storage air source heat pump is additionally performed by changing of sizes and locations of the hospital building. The computed results show that energy cost of water storage air source heat pump is low, so it is more economical than absorption chiller & heater.

  • Heat-pump system has a special feature that provides heating operation in winter season and cooling operation in summer season with a single system. It also has a merit that absorbs and makes use of wastewater heat, terrestrial heat, and heat energy from the air. Because heat-pump system uses midnight electric power, it decreases power peak load and is very economical as a result. By using the property that energy source is converted to low temperature when losing the heat, high temperature energy source is used to provide heating water and low temperature energy source is used to provide cooling water simultaneously in summer season. This study made up a heat-pump system with 4 air heat sources and a water heat source and implemented the optimal operation algorithm that works with numbers of heat pumps to operate them efficiently. With the heat-pump system, we applied it to cooling and heating operation in summer season operation mode in a real building.

  • Numerical and experimental studies on a heat pipe with two heat sources have been performed to investigate the operating characteristics. Numerical analysis was performed based on the cylindrical two-dimensional incompressible laminar flow for the vapor space and the conjugate heat transfer for the entire heat pipe. Experimental study with a 0.45 m length copper-water heat pipe was also performed to validate the numerical modeling for the heat input range from 29 W to 47 W on each heater. As results, the temperature profiles at the outer wall for the single active heat source as well as the temperature profiles for the switching operation between two heat sources are suggested. Due to the axial conduction, it is found that the temperature drop between the evaporator and the condenser appears small when the heat source closer to the condenser is turned on. For the switching operation in the present study, the transient time is about 700s and the temperatures at the locations of both heat source are same in 130s after switching.

  • The major threats that human being is facing nowadays are the Climate change, depletion of the fossil fuels at a rapid rate and energy costs. A significant portion of world energy consumption is consumed by domestic heating and cooling. And heat pumps, due to their higher utilization efficiencies as compared to conventional heating and cooling systems, offer an attractive solution to this problem. Among the types of heat pumps, the Geothermal heat pump or Ground-source heat pump is a highly efficient, renewable energy technology for space heating and cooling. The Ground-source heat pump uses the Earth as a heat sink in the summer and a heat source in the winter. And the Earth, having a relatively constant temperature, warmer than the air in winter and cooler than the air in summer, offers an excellent heat source in winter and heat sink in summer.. This paper will discuss an overview of the types of heat pumps, its operation, benefits of using geothermal heat pumps, soil characteristics, and overview of some experimental works. Finally it will briefly discuss the opportunity of using these energy efficient systems (EES) in the HVAC market of South Korea.

  • Fourier heat conduction law becomes invalid for the situations involving extremely short time heating, very low temperatures and fast moving heat source(or crack), since the wave nature of heat propagation becomes dominant. For these conditions, the modified heat conduction equation with the finite propagation speed of heat in the medium could be applied to predict heat flux and temperature distributions. In this study, temperature distributions at the vicinity of a very fast moving heat source are investigated numerically. Thermal fields are characterized by thermal Mach numbers(M) defined as the ratio of moving heat source speed to heat propagation speed in the solid. In the transonic and supersonic ranges($M{\ge}1$), thermal shocks are shown, which separate the heat affected zone from the thermally undisturbed zone.

  • The river water heat source heat pump has the advantage in the performance compared to air source heat pump. Although its better performance, the large temperature difference between load and source makes system performance worse by nature. In this study, 2-stage compression is considered as the solution of this problem. Generally, heat pump is designed for maximum capacity rate, but it actually operates at part load condition in many cases. Therefore, an information on the part-load character is very important in view of the system overall performance. In this study, part-load performance tests of a R134a 2-stage compression heat pump were carried out over the river water and supply heating water temperature changes. The experimental results show that the system performance is influenced by the part load rates, river water temperature, load temperature, etc.

  • The Gaussian heat source has been widely used to simulate the heat flux of the welding we, and applied to calculating the temperature distribution of a workpiece. The conventional two-dimensional Gaussian heat source for the GMAW is modified in this work by decomposing the arc heat into heats of the cathode and metal transfer. The efficiency and effective arc radius of each heat source are determined analytically for the free-flight mode such as the globular and spray modes. The temperature distribution and weld geometry are calculated using the finite element method, and distribution of the drop heat is found to have significant effects on the penetration. The predicted results show good agreements with the available experimental results, especially with the penetration.
