Metallurgical behavior of laser welded cold rolled low carbon steel was investigated. Welding was performed with CW Nd:YAG laser system. Applied laser power, travel speed and nitrogen blowing pressure were 720W CW, 17mm/s and 196kPa, respectively. According to the test results, many carbide particles were observed on the base metal surface that was polished and etched with nital solution. The carbide particles at the welding heat affected zone were thought to be dissolved during welding process. Microstructural inspection revealed that dissolved carbide particles formed mixed phase of very fine martensite and bainite. Test results also demonstrated that the hardness of matrix remained constant value of around 160Hv over the welding heat affected zone. Dissolved carbide particles, however, showed higher average hardness values of around 276Hv near the fusion boundary and 700Hv at the welding heat affected zone of 0.4mm apart from the fusion line. It was considered that care should be given to minimize the test error when measuring the hardness value since many of the dissolved particles were so small that it was not easy to aim the indentor of the testing machine just on the objects.
Deuterium-tritium reaction is the most promising one in term of the highest nuclear fusion cross-section for the reactor. So it is one of urgent issues to develop materials and components that are simultaneously resistant to high heat flux and high energy neutron flux in realization of the fusion energy. 2.45 MeV neutron production was reported in D-D reaction in KSTAR and regarded as beam-target is the dominant process. The feasibility study of KSTAR to wide area neutron source facility is done in term of D-D and D-T reactions from the empirical scaling law from the mixed fast and thermal stored energy and its projection to cases of heating power upgrade and DT reaction is done.
In the powder bed fusion (PBF) process, a 3D shape is formed by the continuous stacking of very fine powder layers using computer-aided design (CAD) modeling data, following which laser irradiation can be used to fuse the layers forming the desired product. In this method, the main process parameters for manufacturing the desired 3D products are laser power, laser speed, powder form, powder size, laminated thickness, and laser diameter. Stainless steel (STS) 316L exhibits excellent strength at high temperatures, and is also corrosion resistant. Due to this, it is widely used in various additive manufacturing processes, and in the production of corrosion-resistant components with complicated shapes. In this study, rectangular specimens have been manufactured using STS 316L powder via the PBF process. Further, the effect of heat treatment at 800 ℃ on the microstructure and hardness has been investigated.
Fusion bonding of cast iron and Al alloy is an effective way to improve the properties such as low inertia, high efficiency and corrosion resistance in machinery parts. In case of fusion bonding, intermetallic compound layers are formed at the interface between cast iron and Al alloy interface. It is important to control the intermetallic compound layers for improving bonding strength. The formation behavior of intermetallic compound layer by heat treatment has been investigated. Heat treatment was performed at temperature from $600^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$ with $100^{\circ}C$ interval for an hour to investigate the phase transformation during heat treatment. Heat treated specimens were analyzed by using FE-SEM, EPMA and EDS. The EPMA/WDS results revealed that various phases were formed at the interface, which exhibited 4 distinct intermetallic compound layers such as ${\tau}_6-Al_{4.5}FeSi$, ${\tau}_2-Al_3FeSi$, ${\tau}_{11}-Al_5Fe_2Si $and ${\eta}-Al_5Fe_2$. Also, fine precipitation of ${\tau}_1-Al_2Fe_3Si_3$ phase was formed between ${\tau}_{11}$ and ${\eta}$ layer. The phase fraction in intermetallic compound layer was changed by heat treatment temperature. At $600^{\circ}C$, intermetallic compound layer of ${\tau}_6$ phase was mainly formed with increasing heat treatment time. With increasing heat treatment temperature to $800^{\circ}C$, however, ${\tau}_2$ phase was mainly distributed in intermetallic compound layer. ${\tau}_1$ phase was remarkably decreased with increasing heat treatment time and temperature.

Injection molds are fabricated by assembling a number of plates in which mold core and cavity components are inserted. The assembled structure causes a number of contact interfaces between each component where the heat transfer is affected by the thermal contact resistance. However, the mold assembly has been treated as a one body in numerical analyses of injection molding, which has a limitation in predicting the mold temperature distribution during the molding cycle. In this study, a numerical approach that considers the thermal contact effect is proposed to predict the heat transfer characteristics of an injection mold assembly. To find the thermal contact conductance between the mold core and plate, a number of finite element (FE) simulations were performed with the design of experiment (DOE) and statistical analysis. Thus, the heat transfer analyses using the obtained conductance values can provide more reliable results than conventional one-body simulations.
KSTAR in-vessel cryo-pump has been installed in the vacuum vessel top and bottom side with up-down symmetry for the better plasma density control in the D-shape H-mode. The cryogenic helium lines of the in-vessel cryo-pump are located at the vertical positions from the vacuum vessel torus center 2,000 mm. The inductive electrical potential has been optimized to reduce risk of electrical breakdown during plasma disruption. In-vessel cryo-pump consists of three parts of coaxial circular shape components; cryo-panel, thermal shield and particle shield. The cryo-panel is cooled down to below 4.5 K. The cryo-panel and thermal shields were made by Inconel 625 tube for higher mechanical strength. The thermal shields and their cooling tubes were annealed in air environment to improve the thermal radiation emissivity on the surface. Surface of cryo-panel was electro-polished to minimize the thermal radiation heat load. The in-vessel cryo-pump was pre-assembled on a test bed in 180 degree segment base. The leak test was carried out after the thermal shock between room temperature to $LN_2$ one before installing them into vacuum vessel. Two segments were welded together in the vacuum vessel and final leak test was performed after the thermal shock. Commissioning of the in-vessel cryo-pump was carried out using a temporary liquid helium supply system.
The characteristics of high heat input (342kJ/cm) EG (Electro Gas Arc) welded joint of EH36-TM steel has been investigated. The weld metal microstructure consisted of fine acicular ferrite (AF), a little volume of polygonal ferrite (PF) and grain boundary ferrite (GBF). Charpy impact test results of the weld metal and heat affected zone (HAZ) met the requirement of classification rule (Min. 34J at $-20^{\circ}C$). In order to evaluate the relationship between the impact toughness property and the grain size of HAZ, the austenite grain size of HAZ was measured. The prior austenite grain size in Fusion line (F.L+0.1 mm) was about $350{\mu}m$. The grain size in F.L+1.5 mm was measured to be less than $30{\mu}m$ and this region was identified as being included in FGHAZ(Fine Grain HAZ). It is seen that as the austenite grain size decreases, the size of GBF, FSP (Ferrite Side Plate) become smaller and the impact toughness of HAZ increases. Therefore, the CGHAZ was considered to be area up to 1.3mm away from the fusion line. Results of TEM replica analysis for a welded joint implied that very small size ($0.8\sim1.2{\mu}m$) oxygen inclusions played a role of forming fine acicular ferrite in the weld metal. A large amount of (Ti, Mn, Al)xOy oxygen inclusions dispersed, and oxides density was measured to be 4,600-5,300 (ea/mm2). During the welding thermal cycle, the area near a fusion line was reheated to temperature exceeding $1400^{\circ}C$. However, the nitrides and carbides were not completely dissolved near the fusion line because of rapid heating and cooling rate. Instead, they might grow during the cooling process. TiC precipitates of about 50 ~ 100nm size dispersed near the fusion line.
Given the significant social and economic impact caused by heat waves, there is a pressing need to predict them with high accuracy and reliability. In this study, we analyzed the real-time forecast data from six models constituting the Subseasonal-to-Seasonal (S2S) prediction project, to elucidate the key mechanisms contributing to the prediction of the recent record-breaking Korean heat wave event in 2018. Weekly anomalies were first obtained by subtracting the 2017-2020 mean values for both S2S model simulations and observations. By comparing four Korean heat-wave-related indices from S2S models to the observed data, we aimed to identify key climate processes affecting prediction accuracy. The results showed that superior performance at predicting the 2018 Korean heat wave was achieved when the model showed better prediction performance for the anomalous anticyclonic activity in the upper troposphere of Eastern Europe and the cyclonic circulation over the Western North Pacific (WNP) region compared to the observed data. Furthermore, the development of upper-tropospheric anticyclones in Eastern Europe was closely related to global warming and the occurrence of La Niña events. The anomalous cyclonic flow in the WNP region coincided with enhancements in Madden-Julian oscillation phases 4-6. Our results indicate that, for the accurate prediction of heat waves, such as the 2018 Korean heat wave, it is imperative for the S2S models to realistically reproduce the variabilities over the Eastern Europe and WNP regions.
In order to express the CDC70 gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae by heat shock, we have designed heat inducibe hybrid promoters using the Drosophila melanogaster heat shock elements (HSEs). A 220 bp-long upstream fragment of the D. melanogaster hsp70 gene comprised of four HSEs was placed upstream of the putative proximal TATA box of the CDC70 gene. Hybrid promoters containing different fusion joints were tested for their ability to drive the CDC70 gene expression by heat shock. The results showed that the HSEs of D. melanogaster conferred the heat-induced CDC70 gene expression, but the heat inducibility was much lower than that in D. melanogaster.
This paper presents a novel convolutional neural network based multi-feature fusion learning method for non-rigid 3D model retrieval, which can investigate the useful discriminative information of the heat kernel signature (HKS) descriptor and the wave kernel signature (WKS) descriptor. At first, we compute the 2D shape distributions of the two kinds of descriptors to represent the 3D model and use them as the input to the networks. Then we construct two convolutional neural networks for the HKS distribution and the WKS distribution separately, and use the multi-feature fusion layer to connect them. The fusion layer not only can exploit more discriminative characteristics of the two descriptors, but also can complement the correlated information between the two kinds of descriptors. Furthermore, to further improve the performance of the description ability, the cross-connected layer is built to combine the low-level features with high-level features. Extensive experiments have validated the effectiveness of the designed multi-feature fusion learning method.
