  • The computer-aided performance simulation can reduce periods for development of products and cut down on the cost comparing with former trial-and-error procedures. This study has developed a simulation program for a vehicle thermal management system integrating an engine cooling system and an air conditioning system considering interactions and arrangement of air side heat exchangers such as power steering oil cooler, air-cooled transmission oil cooler, condenser, and radiator. The program may be also used for the system performance analysis according to the configuration of the engine coolant side heat exchangers such as water-cooled transmission oil cooler, EGR cooler, and heater core. Experiments utilizing an environmental wind tunnel has been conducted to assess the performance of the system according to the arrangement of air side heat exchangers. Some modification of the coolant loop layout can enhance the heat core performance up to 7% according to the results of the simulations.

  • Desalination has the advantage of being easy to supply water resources. However most desalination devices are developed mainly for large plants and it is not common to use desalination system for a small fishing ship. More than 50% of the input fuel energy of the small shipbuilding's engine is wasted without reused in a ship, and it is necessary to improving the fuel efficiency of the small fishing ship. In this study, a desalination device using waste heat from engine of the ships was developed. As results, it was found that if the condensing chamber uses a fan to circulate the water vapor, the freshwater production was up to 40.0% higher, and the freshwater production efficiency was up to 30.1% increased when the fan was operated.

  • This paper describes the continuing effort to analysis and design on dynamic and electrical behavior of gamma-type free piston Stirling engine/generator with dual-opposed linear generator for domestic micro-CHP (Combined Heat and Power) system. The double acting Stirling engine/generator has one displacer and two power piston which are supported by flexure springs. Two power pistons oscillate with symmetric sinusoidal displacement and are connected with moving magnet type linear generators for power generation. To operate Stirling engine/generator, combustion heat of natural gas is supplied to hot-end and heat is rejected from cold-end by cooling water. The temperature difference across the displacer induces the oscillating motion, and it can be explained with mass-spring vibration system. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design process of linear generator for the double acting free-piston Stirling engine.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how the ignition spark timing conversion influences the engine performance of LPG/Gasoline Bi-Fuel engine. We propose the control system which can advance the ignition spark timing in LPG fuel mode more than used in gasoline fuel mode. In order to investigate the engine performance during combustion, engine performance are sampled by data acquisition system, for example cylinder pressure, pressure rise rate and heat release rate, while change of the rpm(1500, 2000) and the ignition timing advance($5^{\circ}$,$10^{\circ}$,$15^{\circ}$,$20^{\circ}$) As the result, between 1500rpm and 2000rpm, the cylinder pressure and pressure rise rate was increased when the spark ignition was advanced but pressure rise rate at $20^{\circ}$was smaller value. Also, the heat release rate at 1500rpm was increased but it was lower around $20^{\circ}$at 2000rpm.

  • Applicability of organic Rankine cycle for a passenger car with 3.5 L gasoline engine to convert low grade waste heat to useful shaft power has been numerically studied. Working fluid is R134a, and the Rankine cycle is composed of boiler for recovering engine cooling water heat, super heater for recovering exhaust gas heat, scroll expander for converting waste heat to shaft power, condenser for heat emission, internal heat exchanger, and feed pump. Assuming efficiencies of 90% for the heat exchangers, 75% for the scroll expander, and 80% for the feed pump, the Rankine cycle efficiency of 5.53% was calculated at the vehicle speed of 120 km/hr. Net expander shaft output after subtracting the power required to run the pump was 3.22 kW, which was equivalent to 12.1% improvement in fuel consumption. About the same level of improvement in the fuel consumption was obtained over the vehicle speed range of 60 km/hr~120 km/hr.

  • In this experimental study, aluminum hotforging was conduct to get superior pistion to cast piston. Cast structure of billet is destroyed, harmful defects is removed by forging process. We proposed the direction od die design by observing formability of product according to die shape. The microstructure of forged products with different preform was investigated to determine inital billet shape. We proposed appropriate heat treatment condition for improvement of mechanical properties.

  • This study was carried out to develop a process to design a stirling engine utilizing agricultural energy resources and to understand problems confronted in manufacturing the engine in domestic environments, and to suggest methods to improve performance of the engine. A small prototype of the engine was designed, manufactured and tested for its performance. The study proved that more work would be needed to develop a method to seal the engine and to make the engine cooler. Performance of the engine was a little inferrior to that of the GPU-3 engine and was expected to be enhanced by improvement of heat transfer and power transmission mechanisms.

  • Stirling engine is a heat engine with a high potential efficiency, multi-fuel capability, its low emission, quiet operation, very low maintenance requirement and long life. The Stirling cycle can ideally achieve optimum thermodynamic efficiency of the Carnot cycle. But the actual efficiency of practical reciprocating Stirling engine is much less than that of ideal Stirling cycle due to several mechanical limits. This paper presents a new-type Stirling engine employing the scroll mechanism superior to the reciprocating Stirling engine. The new-type Stirling engine is characterized as traits of continuous and wholly seperated compression and expansion, one-way flow, direct cooling and heating through the extensive surfaces of scroll wraps. By means of this traits, the new-type Stirling engine can achieve thermodynamic cycle closer to the ideal Stirling cycle and have many mechanical merits. Also, the new-type Stirling cycle can be applied as Stirling refrigerator and Duplex Stirling machine.

  • The engine performance and combustion characteristics of methanol blended fuel of spark ignition engine were discussed on the basics of experimental investigation. The effects of methanol blending fuel on combustion in cylinder were investigated under various conditions of engine cycle and blending fuel on combustion in cylinder were investigated tinder various conditions of engine cycle and blending ratios. The results showed thai the engine performance was influenced by the methanol blending ratio and the variations of operating conditions test engine. The increase of fuel temperature brought on the improvement of combustion characteristics such as cylinder pressure. the rate of pressure rise and heat release in an engine. The burning rate of fuel-air mixture, the exhaust emissions and the other characteristics of performance were discussed also.
