Heat Transfer in a Micro-actuator Operated by Radiometric Phenomena

  • The heat transfer characteristics of rarefied flows in a micro-actuator are studied numerically. The effect of Knudsen number (Kn) on the heat transfer of the micro-actuator flows is also examined. The Kn based on gas density and characteristic dimension is varied from near-continuum to highly rarefied conditions. Direct simulation Monte Carlo calculations have been performed to estimate the performance of the micro-actuator. The results show that the magnitude of the temperature jump at the wall increases with Kn. Also, the heat transfer to the isothermal wall is found to increase significantly with Kn.

  • Numerical simulations were carried out of the effects of momentum and heat produced by a plasma actuator on neutral flow. Momentum and heat generated during plasma discharge were modeled as a body force and heat source using results of experiments and DSMC of particle. These force and heat model were inserted into a Navier-Stokes equation and the flow around the plasma actuator could be explored by solving fluid dynamics only. Fluid simulation showed that force produced in DSMC generated a jet flow in the vicinity of the plasma actuator and heat accounted for density change.

A Study on Enhancement of Thermoelectric Cooling System Performance by Piezoelectric Actuator (압전 액츄에이터를 이용한 열전냉각 시스템 성능 향상에 관한 연구)

  • The thermoelectric cooling system consisted of the thermoelectric module, a heat sink and a cooling fan, respectively. Also, the piezoelectric actuator was applied to improve the performance of thermoelectric cooling system and investigate the heat transfer phenomenon. The temperature distribution of test section was measured to investigate cooling characteristics of thermoelectric cooling system. The flow phenomenon of test section was visualized using visualization device. When the piezoelectric actuator was applied to the heat transfer process of thermoelectric cooling system, acoustic streaming was occurred in test section. The acoustic streaming was occurred forced convection flow, and was regularly formed the temperature distribution in test section. The results clearly show that the acoustic streaming is one of the prime effects to enhance the convection heat transfer and can enhance the performance of thermoelectric cooling system.

  • This paper proposes experimental results for control performance deterioration of a piezoelectric actuator under high temperature conditions due to external heat environment. In this work, a heat environment from 30 ℃ to 190 ℃ is established by a heat chamber which is capable of high temperature of heat environment. Inside the heat chamber, an experimental apparatus consisting of the stack type of piezoelectric actuator, laser sensor, gap sensor and temperature sensor is established. After evaluating temperature dependent blocking force, displacement and time response of a piezoelectric actuator inside the heat chamber, tracking control performances are evaluated under various temperature conditions via proportional-integral-derivative(PID) feedback controller. The desired position trajectory has a sinusoidal wave form with a fixed frequency. Control performances are experimentally evaluated at both room temperature and high temperature and presented in time domain.

  • Ionic polymer metal composite(IPMC) has been used as a promising material for various actuator applications. The IPMC actuator is difficult to be fabricated with complicated 3-dimensional shape. We propose a simple heat treatment process that can fabricate IPMC actuator with various shapes. Experimental results show the pre-shaped IPMC actuator by heat treatment does not show any degradation of its actuation abilities such as bending displacement, generation force and reliability in bending motion.

  • In the modem manufacturing system, to achieve the unmanned automation, the stability of accuracy is required through a long working period. The thermal deformation of precision machine is predominant in this long time stability. While grinding slender and long workpiece at cylindrical grinding machine, we support workpiece using steadies to prevent the vibration of workpiece. The thermal deformation of the machine by grinding and internal heat source cause processing errors, so the steadies for compensating the thermal deformation in real time are strongly needed. In order to compensate these thermal deformation and grinding processing errors, the device to determine the precise positioning having the stroke of 10.mu.m is necessary. This paper suggests design and make the device to determine the precise positioning using thermoelectric device, to investigate the control characteristics and presents the heat actuator will be very useful in machine tool.

  • Recently, in optical storage device technical trends, the size of optical drive is slimmer to adopt notebook computer and the power of actuator is higher to achieve the high transfer rate. However, these trends of optical disc drives tend to increase the temperature of the actuator part, it causes some problems on the performance of optical parts - the resonance frequency of the actuator is down to lower band and the objective lens, coil and magnet are easily damaged. In this study, to overcome these thermal problems, the numerical simulations of heat transfer were performed. As the result of simulations, the thermal characteristic of the hybrid actuator is better than the previous design. And, it shows the good dynamic performance in experiment.

  • Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) is one of the most promising candidates for high density magnetic storages over 1 Tb/$in^2$ areal density. Since the precise light delivery to the head is a key factor to realize HAMR application, it is required to establish the light delivery using micro laser module and micro actuator. For the careful control of micro actuator, a laser module was designed including laser diode, optical fiber, collimating lens, and fabricated V-groove substrate. In addition, the basic aligning method between the laser module and HAMR head was studied by the detection of current change in photo diode due to the amount of reflected light from the head.

  • The state of the art for the design of swing ann actuators for optical disc drives is to obtain the high efficient dynamic characteristics, especially for the small size for the mobile information devices, It is affected by the need of consumers who wants the portable digital storage devices maintaining highly functional and removable characteristics of the optical disk drive (ODD). As a necessary consequence, the need of the small form factor (SFF) storage device has been considered as an important part in the information storage technology. In this paper. we suggest a new conceptual miniaturized swing arm type actuator that has high efficient dynamic characteristics as well as satisfies the sensitivity and the heat emission requirements for the SFF-ODD. It also uses a tracking electromagnetic (EM) circuit for a focusing motion. Due to the size constraint, the thermal problem of optical head arises; therefore, we design an efficiently heat emitted structure for the actuator.

  • This paper presents development of an special metal hydride(SMH) actuator system using a peltier module. The newly developed simple SMH actuator, consisting of the plated hydrogen-absorbing alloy as a power source, Peltier elements as a heat source and a cylinder with metal bellows as a functioning part, has been developed. The SMH actuator is characterized by its small size, low weight, noiseless operation and a compliance similar to that of human body. A new SMH actuator that uses reversible reactions between the heat energy and mechanical energy of a hydrogen absorbing alloy. It is well known that hydrogen-absorbing alloys can reversibly absorb and desorb a large amount of hydrogen, more than about 1000 times of their own volume. To improve the thermal conductivity of the hydrogen-absorbing alloy, an electro-less copper plating has been carried out. For this purpose, the effects of the electro-less copper plating and the dynamic characteristics of the SMH actuator have been studied. The hydrogen equilibrium pressure increases and hydrogen is desorbed by heating the hydrogen-absorbing alloys, whereas by cooling the alloys, the hydrogen equilibrium pressure decreases and hydrogen is absorbed. The SMH actuator has the characteristic of being light and easy to use. Therefore, it is suitable for medical and rehabilitation applications.
