Effects of Post Individualities on Treatability of Small Diameter Japanese Larch (Larix Leptolepis) with ACQ and CCA (낙엽송 원주상 소경목의 원목성상과 방부 처리성)

  • This study investigated how wood properties (i.e., annual rings, sapwood, heartwood, and cracks) might affect preservative treatment in Japanese larch (Larix leptolepis) round-wood product. We specially focused on small-diameter (~10 cm diameter) wood that is commercially sold in market. Among 100 wood samples, the groups of sample with 13~16, 17~20 annual rings represented 33 and 27 in each frequency, while 2~3 and 4~5 mm annual ring width accounted for 72 and 68 in frequency. More than a half (54%) of wood samples contained a mix of heartwood and sapwood in its surface. The rest (46%) had only heartwood exposed in the wood surface. A wide range of checks were showed in the wood samples, but the highest frequency was observed in samples with 1~6 surface (1~14 mm in size) checks and 1~4 end-grain (8~14 mm in size) checks in each round-wood sample. Pressure treatment resulted in a wide range of penetration of ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quat) into the wood, showing $4.3{\pm}4.19mm$ penetration in the wood samples contained a mix of heartwood and sapwood in its surface. However preservative treatment was much less effective for the heartwood only wood samples, ranging average 1.3 mm with ACQ and 1.1 mm with CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate). These penetration results shown in heartwood samples did not meet the penetration standard that is required for H3 by the Korean Forest Service in relation to wood preservation treatment. These low penetration results were not significantly improved even if we incised wood samples to improve treatment effect, showing only small increase of 0.7 mm with ACQ and 0.6 mm with CCA. When preservative treatment was tested with heartwood, penetration of preservatives decrease with increase of annual rings per a cross-section area (r=0.5345). We also found that the length and number of check had no effect on preservative treatment, showing r=0.1301 and r=0.1802, respectively.

Impregnation of Castanea creanata Wood by Hydrophobic Oil

  • This paper investigates the penetration of essential oil into radial and longitudinal directions of Castanea crenata. Present study was performed to know the essential oil penetration depth in radial and longitudinal direction of Castanea crenata. Essential oil penetration depth was found higher in longitudinal direction than in radial direction and it was about 53 times high at 15.0 second of penetration. In early wood, fiber conducted oil more than that of large vessel. In heartwood, fiber had played an important role for the conduction of oil. But in sapwood, small vessel conducted oil deeper than wood fiber, which was also significantly different from large. On the other hand, large vessel in heartwood had statistically lower penetration depth than that of fiber and small vessel. At the beginning of penetration the speed was high and gradually decreased in course of time.

Longitudinal Conduction of Preservative Solution by Larix kaempferi

  • Moisture content of Larix kapempferi was maintained at 28% after air drying. 5% CCFZ solution penetration depth was observed through longitudinal tracheid and axial resin canal. Penetration depth was increased significantly from heartwood to sapwood and the penetration depth was found 1.3 times higher for sapwood measured at 15.0 second of penetration. On the other hand, liquid flow in sapwood and heartwood involved most liquid first entering the resin canals. Overall resin canal conducted 1.4 times more than tracheid. Latewood was found more permeable than in earlywood. At the beginning of penetration, the speed was high and then decreased in the course of time.

Longitudinal Penetration of Water through the Vessel and Wood Fiber in Castanea crenata

  • An experiment was conducted to know ultra-pure distilled water penetration depth through large vessel, small vessel, latewood fiber and earlywood fiber in longitudinal direction of Castanea crenata. In heartwood, latewood fiber transported water more than large and small vessel. While in sapwood, small vessel conduction depth was found the highest. Penetration depth of water after 15.0 seconds, no significant difference was observed among earlywood fiber, latewood fiber and earlywood vessel. Whilst in heartwood, no statistical difference was observed among earlywood fiber, latewood fiber and earlywood vessel. At the beginning, the speed of water penetration was high and then gradually decreased.

Lateral Conduction of Preservative Solution in Larix kaempferi Woods

  • An experiment was conducted to observe the 5% CCFZ solution penetration depth through ray parenchyma and ray tracheid of Larix kapempferi. Moisture content was adjusted 28% for both sapwood and heartwood. Even though the moisture content was same, heartwood was 1.3 times less permeable than sapwood and the difference was found statistically significant. Due to anatomical differences between ray parenchyma and ray tracheid, ray parenchyma was about 1.3 times more permeable than ray tracheid. Penetration speed was high initially and it decreased rapidly in course of time.

Isoliquiritigenin : A Competitive Tyrosinase Inhibitor from the Heartwood of Dalbergia odorifera

  • Effect of isoliquiritigenin isolated from the heartwood of Dalbergia odorifera T. Chen (Leguminosae) on mushroom tyrosinase activity was investigated in vitro using L-tyrosine and L-3, 4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) as the substrates. When L-tyrosine was used as a substrate, both isoliquiritigenin and kojic acid, a positive control, inhibited tyrosinase activity in a concentration-dependent manner. IC$_{50}$ values of isoliquiritigenin and kojic acid were 61.4 and 52.2 ${\muM}$, respectively. However, isoliquiritigenin showed week inhibitory effect on the oxidation of L-DOPA by tyrosinase with inhibition ratio of 9.1 ${\pm}$ 7.1% at 100 ${\muM}$. It is also suggested that 3-unsubstituted and 4-hydroxyl phenyl group in isoliquiritigenin plays an important role on the inhibition of tyrosinase activity when L-tyrosine was used as a substrate. Analysis of Lineweaver-Burk plot showed that isoliquiritigenin acts as a competitive inhibitor in case of L-tyrosine as a substrate.

  • Through bioassay-guided separation of the chemical constituents from the heartwood of Dalbergia odorifera, an 2'-O-methoxyisoliquiritigenin(1) was isolated as cytotoxic principle. 1 showed potent cytotoxic activity against the three kinds of human cancer cell lines (A-549, SK-MEL-2 and SK-OV-3) with similar activity to 5-Fluorouracil.

Sesquiterpenoids from the heartwood of Juniperu s chinensis

  • A new sesquiterpenoid, 11-hydroxy-valenc-1(10),3(4)-dien-2-one (3), two chemically synthesized but first isolate from nature, $3-oxocedran-8{\beta}-ol$ (1) and valenc-1(10),3(4),11(12)-trien-2-one (2) along with four known compounds, sugiol (4), (+)-nootkatone (5), 11-hydroxy-valenc-1(10)-en-2-one (6), and clovandiol (7), were isolated from the heartwood of Juniperus chinensis. All chemical structures were elucidated using extensive spectroscopic analysis including 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. Valenc-1(10),3(4),11(12)-trien-2-one (2) exhibited significant inhibitory activity against butyrylcholinesterase with an $IC_{50}$ value of $68.45{\mu}M$.

Microfibril Angle Characteristics of Korean Pine Trees from Depending on Provinces

  • This study investigated the characteristics of microfibril angle(MFA) in order to see if there was any difference in pine tree lumber quality among the three mountain areas surrounding the Taebaek Mountains in Korea - Yeongdong (Goseong-gun), Yeongseo (Hongcheon-gun) and Yeongnam (Bonghwa-gun). Pine trees of each mountain area were divided into earlywood and latewood in relation to heartwood part (1959 ~ 1961, 3 annual rings) and sapwood part (2002 ~ 2004, 3annual rings), and measured at tangential section. The microfibril angle showed significant differences between mountain areas. In general, Goseong Mountain was found to have 37.35°, followed by Hongcheon Mountain 32.42° and Bonghwa Mountain 25.75°, in order. The sapwood part had larger angle than heartwood part; and earlywood, than latewood. Variation within a single annual ring tended to be smaller from earlywood toward latewood.
