  • The ecotoxicological effects of two antibiotics, fenbendazole and lincomycin, were observed in the harpacticoid copepod Tigriopus japonicus s.l. collected from tidal pools in the southern coast of Korea. Fenbendazole had a significant effect on the survival rates (p < 0.05), delay of copepodite emergence, and urosome size (p < 0.05). Lincomycin, on the other hand, had no significant influence on these environmental indicators. However, our analysis of morphological abnormalities in T. japonicus s.l. showed that lincomycin was more effective than fenbendazole in causing deformities. The pattern of deformity was diverse, with fused segments, and loss or addition of setae in the swimming legs. All of these patterns appeared as a result of relatively low concentrations of this antibiotic (0.3, $1\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$). We report here patterns of morphological abnormality in T. japonicus s.l. exposed to antibiotics, and suggest their possible application in ecotoxicological monitoring.

  • Background: Sciatic nerve injury due to intramuscular injection (SNIII) is still a health problem. This study aimed to determine whether there is a correlation between neuropathic pain and electrodiagnostic findings in SNIII. Methods: Patients whose clinical and electrodiagnostic findings were compatible with SNIII participated in this retrospective cohort study. Compound muscle action potential (CMAP) and sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) amplitudes of the sural, superficial peroneal, peroneal, and tibial nerves were graded from 1 to 4. Leeds assessment of neuropathic symptoms and signs scale (LANSS) was applied to all patients. Results: Forty-eight patients were included in the study, 67% of whom had a LANSS score ≥ 12. Sural SNAP amplitude abnormalities were present in 8 (50%) out of 16 patients with a LANSS score < 12, and 28 (87.5%) out of 32 patients with a LANSS score ≥ 12, with significant differences between the groups (P = 0.011). There was a positive correlation between the LANSS score and the sural SNAP amplitude grading (P = 0.001, r = 0.476). A similar positive correlation was also found in the LANSS score and the tibial nerve CMAP amplitude grading (P = 0.004, r = 0.410). Conclusions: This study showed a positive correlation between the severity of tibial nerve CMAP/sural SNAP amplitude abnormality and LANSS score in SNIII. Neuropathic pain may be more common in SNIII patients with sural nerve SNAP amplitude abnormality.

  • The present report describes a case that showed a normal fetal karyotype in an antenatal genetic study but an abnormal placental karyotype of 46,XX,r (15) on postnatal examination. The pregnancy was complicated by fetal nuchal translucency in the first trimester and intrauterine growth restriction in the second and third trimesters. A 1780 gm female baby was born after 40 weeks of gestation, but died of respiratory distress and sepsis on the 10th day of life. Our case was unique in that the placental chromosomal aberration was a structural abnormality instead of a numerical aberration that is seen in most reported cases of confined placental mosaicism.

  • Objectives: The impact of climate change on the health has been of increasing concern due to a recent temperature increase and weather abnormality, and the research results of the impact varied depending on regions. We synthesized risk estimates of the overall health effects of low and high temperature taking account of the heterogeneity. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PUBMED to identify journal articles of low and/or high temperature effects on mortality. The search was limited to the English language and epidemiological studies using time-series analysis and/or case-crossover design. Random-effect models in meta analysis were used to estimate the percent increase in mortality with $1^{\circ}C$ temperature decrease or increase with 95% confidence intervals (CI) in cold or hot days. Results: Twenty three studies were presented in two tables: 1) low temperature effects; 2) high temperature effects on mortality. The combined effects of low and high temperatures on total mortality were 2% (95% CI, 1-4%) per $1^{\circ}C$ decrease and 4% (95% CI, 2-5%) per $1^{\circ}C$ increase of temperature, respectively. Conclusions: This meta analysis found that both low and high temperatures affected mortality, and the magnitude of high temperature appeared to be stronger than that of low temperature.

  • Permethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide, has been widely used to protect domestic animals and the public health, as well as in agriculture against a variety of pests, which provides potential for environmental exposure. Permethrin is classified as possible human carcinogen and endocrine disrupting chemical by many international authorities. However, its developmental effects have been rarely studied. This study investigated the effects of permethrin during embryo-genesis. Developmental toxicity of permethrin was evaluated using short-term in vitro battery system. Gestation day 9.5 rat embryos (organogenesis) were cultured with permethrin (0.1,0.4 and 0.8 mg/ml) for 48 hours using whole embryo culture system. All the treatments exhibited significant decreases in the total morphological score. Permethrin induced significant growth retardation and the developmental abnormality at doses of 0.4 and 0.8 mg/ml. Moreover, the DNA and protein contents of embryos decreased in dose-dependent manner. These observations suggest that permethrin contributes to toxicity on embryonic developments in rats.

  • Cleidocranial dysplasia(CCD) is a congenital genetic disorder of skeletal and dental abnormality, which is mesodermal dysfunction influencing many tissues and organs, CCD was reported by Morand at first in 1766, And later, it was named cleidocranial dysostosis, cleidocranial dysplasia, Marie-sainton syndrome and mutational dysostosis. It is autosomal dominant disorder and there is no prevalence between man and woman. Until recent days, mutation of Runx2 in chromosome6p21 has known to be a main factor causing CCD. The specific clinical features of CCD are aplasia or hypoplasia of one or both clavicles and incomplete closing of fontanels and cranial sutures. Dental manifestations include retention of deciduous teeth, delayed eruption of permanent teeth, supernumerary teeth and cyst. Because there is no mental retardation and physical disability in CCD patients, they usually can not recognize their dental abnormality by the time of abolescence. So, after exfoliation of deciduous teeth, they usually live with edentulous status. It usually drives CCD patients to suffer from esthetic and functional problem. For this reason, CCD patients must be early diagnosed and improved in their appearance as well as masticatory function. So, surgical removal of supernumerary teeth and orthodontic eruption of the natural permanent teeth at adequate time is necessary.

  • Background: Dental studies of precocious puberty have focused on examination of jaw and dentition growth. The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between precocious puberty and maxillary dental developmental abnormalities (DDAs). Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on the Korean patients in whom dental panoramic and hand-wrist radiographs had been taken before they were 15 years of age. The maxillary DDAs were assessed as mesiodens, congenital missing teeth, peg-shape lateral incisors, or impacted teeth. The chronological ages of the control group members were within the normal range of the hand-wrist bone age. Others with a peak luteinizing hormone of ≥ 5 and < 5 IU/L were allocated to central precocious puberty (CPP) and peripheral precocious puberty (PPP), respectively. Results: Of the enrolled 270 patients, 195, 52, and 23 were allocated to the control, CPP, and PPP groups, respectively. The maxillary DDAs were significantly more prevalent in the CPP group than in the other groups. Among those with maxillary DDA, the mesiodens predominated. Age- and sex-adjusted multivariate analysis revealed maxillary DDA (odds ratio, 3.36; 95% CI, 1.60-7.05) and especially mesiodens (odds ratio, 5.52; CI, 2.29-13.28) to be significantly associated with CPP. Conclusions: Maxillary DDAs were significantly more prevalent in the CPP group than in the PPP or control groups. Among the many types of maxillary DDAs, mesiodens was significantly associated with CPP and may be considered a predictor of the development of CPP.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the toxic effect of WSF (water soluble fraction) in crude oil on the hatch, survival rate, abnormality and physiological activity of fertilized eggs and early larvae in Paralicthys olivaceus. The time required in hatching the fertilized eggs exposure to crude oil was 50.8${\sim}$53.2 hours both in control group and experimental group, showing no significant difference(p>0.05). The hatching rate in the control group was more than 80% in 1.9 ${\mu}g/mL$ WSF concentration, but hatching rate was less than 55.7% in below of 3.9 ${\mu}g/mL$ WSF concentration, showing significant difference (p<0.05). The survival rate on the 3rd day of early larval stage was 61.96% with 1.9 ${\mu}g/mL$ WSF, 11.1% with 3.9 ${\mu}g/mL$ WSF, and they all died with other concentration levels. The oxygen consumption rate in experimental groups was lower than control group. The heart rate (no./min) was 47.4${\sim}$52.8 before hatching and there was no significant difference between control group and experimental group, but heart rate reduced with the decrease of WSF concentration after hatching. The abnormality was 1.1% in the control group whereas 36.7% with 3.9${\mu}g/mL$ WSF, and abnormality was mostly comprised of incomplete spinal formation and spinal curvature. The results of this study suggest that even low concentration to WSF affects the early development of the flounder, Paralicthys olivaceus.
