Scheme for Reducing Harmonics in Output Voltage of Modular Multilevel Converters with Offset Voltage Injection

  • This paper proposes a new THD reduction algorithm for modular multilevel converters (MMCs) with offset voltage injection operated in nearest level modulation (NLM). High voltage direct current (HVDC) is actively introduced to the grid connection of offshore wind powers, and this paper deals with a voltage generation technique with an MMC for wind power generation. In the proposed method, third harmonic voltage is added for reducing the THD. The third harmonic voltage is adjusted so that each of the pole voltage magnitudes maintains a constant value with a maximum number of (N+1) levels, where N is the number of sub-modules per arm. By using the proposed method, the THD of the output voltage is mitigated without increasing the switching frequency. In addition, the proposed method has advantageous characteristics such as simple implementation. As a part of this study, this paper compares the THD results of the conventional method and the proposed method with offset voltage injection to reduce the THD. In this paper, simulations have been carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, and the proposed method is implemented by a HILS (Hardware in the Loop Simulation) system. The obtained results show agreement with the simulation results. It is confirmed that the new scheme achieved the maximum level output voltage and improved the THD quality.

  • The surface characteristics of polymers for liquid crystal alignment are studied by optical second-harmonic genertion (SHG) tecnique. Using SHG technique, the LC monolayers on rubbed polymer have already been studied. But, in this paper, the SH signals of polymer were observed and the orientational distribution of oriented polymer was studied. Te SHG experiments for side-chain type and main-chain type polymers are carried out as a function of rubbing strength. The orentational distribution of surface molecules of polymers is compared with the LC pretilt angle measured by the crystal rotation method.

  • 2차 비선형 현상인 제2고조파(Second Harmonic Generation:SHG)는 electric dipole approximation에 의하면 중심대칭성이 있는 물질에서는 발생하지 않는다. 그러나 표면에 대해서는 그 중심대칭성이 깨져 제2고조파가 발생할 수 있게 된다. 즉 bulk에서는 제2고조파가 나오지 않는 반면, 표면에서는 나오게 된다. 본 연구에서는 electric dipole approximation 이상(예를 들면 magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole)을 고려해 시료의 물리적인 성질을 실제 물질계에 가깝게 기술하고자 했다.   • In this paper, a novel utility connected photovoltaic power generation system with unity power factor and uninterruptable power system facility and its control strategy are proposed. The proposed photovoltaic(PV) system is connected in parallel between utility and load. The PV system provides an uninterruptable voltage to load, a maximum power tracking to solar array, and power factor correction to the utility. The proposed system has the following advantages compared with the conventional utility connected PV system. 1. Harmonic elimination Function 2. Feeding the photovoltaic energy to the utility 3. Providing the uninterruptible power source along battery to the load In case that the photovoltaic array system is on the poor power generation, the battery and capacitor of the PV system are charged by three phase utility source and the inverter in the PV system only provides the reactive current to eliminate the harmonic current exited on the utility. In the normal operation mode, the PV system supplies active power to load and reactive power to utility in order to maintain the unity power factor and to regulate ac load voltage.

  • Programmed PWM(Pulse Width Modulated) generation techniques eliminating several low order harmonics have been widely used in the inverter circuit which produces minimum current ripple, reduced torque pulsation and thereby improves overall system performance. However, the applications of the programmed PWM technique are limited to CVCF(Constant Voltage Constant Frequency) applications and various motor drives. Although the programmed PWM produces a lower harmonic distorted waveform than the carrier modulated PWM, real-time programming is not possible because of the complicated calculation required for the gating signal. In this paper, a new programmed PWM technique named TAM (time averaging model) is developed to compensate for the demerits of the conventional programmed PWM technique with moderate harmonic distortion. Computer simulations are performed to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • We have experimentally investigated the cyclic deformation in copper using ultrasonic nonlinearity. The observation and characterization of dislocation substructure have been conducted using transmission electron microscope and electron backscattered diffraction technique. The ultrasonic nonlinearity (${\beta}/{\beta}_0$) was measured by the harmonic generation technique after various fatigue cycles. The microstructural effect on the nonlinearity was discussed regarding the extent of dislocation substructures evolved from low cycle fatigue. The ultrasonic nonlinearity of copper monotonically increased with the fatigue cycles due to the evolution of dislocation cell substructures.

Preparation and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Novel Polyesters with Enhanced Thermal Stability of Second Harmonic Generation

  • 2,5-Di-(2'-hydroxyethoxy)-4'-nitrostilbene (3) was prepared and polycondensed with terephthaloyl chloride, adipoyl chloride, and sebacoyl chloride to yield novel T-type polyesters (4-6) containing the NLO-chromophores dioxynitrostilbenyl groups, which constituted parts of the polymer backbones. Polymers 4-6 are soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide. They showed thermal stability up to 260 oC in thermogravimetric analysis with glass-transition temperatures obtained from differential scanning calorimetry in the range 90-95 oC. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients (d33) of poled polymer films at the 1064 nm fundamental wavelength were around 1.42 ´ 10-9 esu. The dipole alignment exhibited high thermal stability up to 5 oC higher than glass-transition temperature (Tg), and there was no SHG decay below 100 oC due to the partial main-chain character of polymer structure, which is acceptable for NLO device applications.

Synthesis and Properties of Novel T-type Nonlinear Optical Polyurethane Containing Tricyanovinylthienyl Group with Enhanced Thermal Stability of Dipole Alignment

  • A novel T-type polyurethane 7 containing 1-(2,5-dioxyphenyl)-2-(5-(1,2,2-tricyanovinyl)-2-thienyl)ethenes as NLO chromophores, which constitute part of the polymer backbone, was prepared. Polyurethane 7 is soluble in common organic solvents such as DMF and DMSO. It shows a thermal stability up to $270^{\circ}C$ from TGA thermogram with $T_g$ value obtained from DSC thermogram near $155^{\circ}C$. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient ($d_{33}$) of poled polymer film at 1560 nm fundamental wavelength is $3.56{\times}10^{-9}$ esu. Polymer 7 exhibits a thermal stability even at $5^{\circ}C$ higher than $T_g$, and no significant SHG decay is observed below $160^{\circ}C$, which is acceptable for nonlinear optical device applications.

  • 1962년 Armstrong 등에 의해 second harmonic generation(SHG) 의 이론이 완성된 후 SHG 효율을 높이기 위한 방법으로 비선형성이 큰 물질의 개발과 더불어 위상정합(phase matching)을 만족시키는 여러가지 방법이 연구 되었다. 특히 위상정합의 경우 지금까지는 복굴절을 이용하는 방법이 널리 사용되었으나 이 경우 입사광의 파장이 제한적이고, 많은 무기물 결정에서 비선형광학계수의 가장 큰 텐서 성분인 $d_{zzz}$를 사용할 수 없다는 단점을 가지고 있다. 반면 유사위상정합(Quasi-phase matching:QPM) 은 비선형광학계수( $d_{zzz}$)의 방향을 결맞음 길이(coherence length)마다 분극반전 시켜주어 2차 조화파의 진폭을 길이방향으로 계속 증가시키는 방법으로 구역반전된 길이를 조절하면 거의 모든 파장에 대해 비임계 위상정합( $d_{zzz}$ 사용)이 가능하고, 2차 조화파가 기본파의 전파경로에서 벗어나는 walk-off 현상이 없어 SHG 전환효율을 극대화할 수 있다. 표면 제2고조파 발생을 이용한 색소 Rd6G박막층의 손상 분석 (Detection of Damage of Rd6G Film Using Surface Second-Harmonic Generation)

  • 색소 Rd6G박막층에서의 표면손상을 제2고조파 발생법을 응용하여 분석하였다. 유리기판 위에 스핀코팅 방법으로 Rd6G박막을 만들고 Rd6G의 강한 흡수선 근방의 Q-switched Nd:YAG 레이저의 제2고조파(532nm)를 입사시켜 손상영역을 만들었다. 여기에 기저빔 $(1.06\mu\textrm{m})$을 입사시켰을 때 손상부분에서 표면 제2고조파 신호의 세기가 감소함을 이용하여 손상부분의 모양과 범위를 측정하였다. 이 결과는 광학현미경으로 직접 관찰한 결과와 일치하였다.
