  • Both plastic and elastic properties change dramatically from the beginning to the end of the compaction phase. Previous investigations have shown that powder transfer and high powder flow during initial compaction at low density affects the strength of the final component significantly. Investigated here are shear failure and elastic shear modulus in the low density range for hard metal powder and for pre-alloyed water atomized iron powder. Direct shear test equipment for sand and clay has been modified to measure the shearing properties of powder for an axial loading between 1 kPa and 500 kPa.

  • As a new approach to substitute for a hard alloy of stellite 6B containing Co which is radioactive in nuclear system, a hard-phase coating of CrN will be applicable to protect 12Cr steel from erosion at leading edge on steam turbine blade. The CrN coating was prepared by arc ion plating on 12 Cr steel and was undertaken in liquid impact test at the velocity of 35Om/sec, which simulate the environment in the last stage of blade. The erosion resistance of coating was evaluated by optical observation on damaged surface. The threshold number of impact was closely related with surface hardness. And thus, it was confirmed that surface hardening improves the life time of steam turbine blade.

  • A new ultrasonic pulse-echo technique was developed and described for vibration measurement of the suspension assembly in hard disk drives. The method is based upon the difference in magnitude of two consecutive reflection waves from a moving object(suspension), while the traditional ultrasonic vibrometer uses the phase shift of the reference wave and the reflection wave. A cone-shape delay line is designed to access the small structure. A simple mathematical model is presented and analyzed with experimental results to show the feasibility of the method. The advantages of this ultrasonic vibration measurement method are relatively high resolution, low cost, and ease of implementation comparing with the Laser Doppler vibrometer.

  • This paper presents a high-efficient and cost effective three-phase AC/DC-DC/AC power conversion system with a single two-switch type active Auxiliary Resonant DC Link (ARDCL) snubber circuit, which can minimize the total power dissipation. The active ARDCL snubber circuit is proposed in this paper and its unique features are described. Its operation principle in steady-state is discussed for the three phase AC/DC-DC/AC converter, which is composed of PWM rectifier as power factor correction (PFC) converter, sinewave PWM inverter. In the presented power converter system not only three-phase AC/DC PWM rectifier but also three-phase DC/AC inverter can achieve the stable ZVS commutation for all the power semiconductor devices. It is proved that the proposed three-phase AC/DC-DC/AC converter system is more effective and acceptable than the previous from the cost viewpoint and high efficient consideration. In addition, the proposed two-switch type active auxiliary ARDCL snubber circuit can reduce the peak value of the resonant inductor injection current in order to maximize total system actual efficiency by using the improved DSP based control scheme. Moreover the proposed active auxiliary two-switch ARDCL snubber circuit has the merit so that there is no need to use any sensing devices to detect the voltage and current in the ARDCL sunbber circuit for realizing soft-switching operation. This three-phase AC/DC-DC/AC converter system developed for UPS can achieve the 1.8% higher efficiency and 20dB lower conduction noise than those of the conventional three-phase hard-switching PWM AC/DC-DC/AC converter system. It is proved that actual efficiency of the proposed three-phase AC/DC-DC/AC converter system operating under a condition of soft switching is 88.7% under 10kw output power.

  • This study deals with both effects of inorganic fillers to vulcanized rubbers such as NR, CR, EPDM, NBR & SBR and inorganic characteristics of domestic fillers in comparision with hard clay produced in the USA. The results were as follows. 1. Main ingredient of domestic clay "Ha-dong clay" was Halloysite, "No-ha Island" was Pyrophyllite with $\alpha$-Quartz, and both of "Hard clay" & "Hwa-soon clay" were proved to be Kaolinite by XRD, DT-TGA and chemical analysis by XRF. 2. Tensile strength value of SBR compounded with these fillers, was Hard clay $146kg\;f/cm^2$, Kaolinite $123kg\;f/cm^2$, Pyrophyllite $82kg\;f/cm^2$, Halloysite $80kg\;f/cm^2$, precipitated $CaCO_3\;27kg\;f/cm^2$, and ground $CaCO_3$ was $21kg\;f/cm^2$. These results showed the increase of seven times according to filler species. 3. The physical properties of non-crystalline rubbers, such as SBR, NBR & EPDM, compared with NR & CR, have been considerably changed according to crystalline phase, particle size, shape and surface structure of fillers. Especially, tensile strength value in case of SBR & EPDM, was differentiated about 1.5 times by the particle size of fillers. 4. In SBR, physical properties of rubber compounded with Kaolinite which was surface treated with fatty acid and silane, almost approach to the value of hard clay. 5. Delayed cure time of Kaolinite and decrease of rubber properties by $CaCO_3$ can be improved by blending kaolinite & $CaCO_3$ in the ratio of 2:1.

  • Background: Hallux valgus (HV) is a foot deformity developed by mediolateral deviation of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Although various foot-toe orthoses were used to correct the HV angle, verification of the effects of kinetics variables such as ground reaction force (GRF) through three-dimensional (3D) gait analysis according to the various type of orthoses for HV is insufficient. Objects: This study aimed to investigate the effect of soft and hard types of foot and toe orthoses to correct HV deformity on the GRF in individuals with HV using 3D motion analysis system during walking. Methods: Twenty-six subjects participated in the experiment. Participants had HV angle of more than 15° in both feet. Two force platforms were used to obtain 3D GRF data for both feet and a 3D motion capture system with six infrared cameras was used to measure exact stance phase point such as heel strike or toe off period. Total walk trials of each participant were 8 to 10, the walkway length was 6 m. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to determine the effects of each orthosis condition on the various GRF values. Results: The late anteroposterior maximal force and a first vertical peak force of the GRF showed that the hard type orthosis condition significantly increased GRF compared to the other orthosis conditions (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There were significant effects in GRF values when wearing the hard type foot orthosis. However, the hard type foot orthosis was uncomfortable to wear during walking. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new foot-toe orthosis that can compensate for these disadvantages.

  • Ester- and ether-based thermoplastic polyurethanes of different hardness were injection molded at different mold temperatures and effects of mold temperature on the physical properties of TPUs were investigated. Glass transition temperatures of soft segments of TPUs were hardly changed by mold temperatures. The phase separation of soft and hard segments of injection molded TPUs were affected little by mold temperatures. However, crystallinity of hard segments, temperature range of rubbery plateau, and tensile strength of injection molded TPUs decreased with increasing mold temperatures for TPUs of high hardness. However, injection molded TPUs of low hardness showed increases of crystallinity of hard segments, temperature range of rubbery plateau, and tensile strength with increasing mold temperatures. Different physical properties of injection molded TPUs depending on mold temperatures were attributed to different crystallization and physical crosslinking effects of hard segments.

  • Nano-sized Ba-ferrite, Ni-Zn ferrite and $BaFe_{12}O_{19}/Ni_{0.5}Zn_{0.5}Fe_2O_4$ nanocomposite ferrite were prepared by sol-gel combustion method. Nanocomposite was calcined at temperature range of $600{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. According to the diffraction patterns, hard/soft nanocomposite was indicated to the coexistence of the magnetoplumbite structural $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ and spinel $Ni_{0.5}Zn_{0.5}Fe_2O_4$ and agree with the standard data (JCPDS 10-0325). The particle size of nanocomposite turn out to be less than 90 nm. The nanocomposite ferrite shows a single-phase magnetization behavior, implying that the hard magnetic phase and soft magnetic phase were well exchange-coupled. The specific saturation magnetization ($M_s$) of the nanocomposite is located between hard ($BaFe_{12}O_{19}$) and soft ferrite ($Ni_{0.5}Zn_{0.5}Fe_2O_4$). The remanence (Mr) of nanocomposite ferrite is much higher than that for the individual $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ and $Ni_{0.5}Zn_{0.5}Fe_2O_4$ ferrite. $(BH)_{max}$ is increased, generally.

  • Recently, as MEMS and NEMS devices have been widely used in the various engineering applications, the characteristics of nanoscale systems are investigated in the limelight. However, as opposed to a macroscale system, the identification of the state of nanoscale systems is extremely hard because they can include only the order of $10^3{\sim}10^5$ molecules, which requires highly expensive and accurate experimental apparatus for an investigation. This limitations make the study on nanoscale system use computer simulations. Therefore, it is strongly required to identify the state of nanoscale system simulated in computer simulation. In this molecular dynamics(MD) study, we suggest that the potential energy of individual molecule can be used as criterion for defining the state of clusters or nanoscale systems. In addition, we compared the phase state from the potential energy with one from the radial distribution function(RDF) for verification. The comparison showed that the intermolecular potential energy can be used as a criteria distinguishing the phase state of nanoscale systems.
