  • Off-line handwritten character recognition is in difficulty of incomplete preprocessing because it has not dynamic and timing information besides has various handwriting, extreme overlap of the consonant and vowel and many error image of stroke. Consequently off-line handwritten character recognition needs to study about preprocessing of various methods such as binarization and thinning. This paper considers running time of watershed algorithm and the quality of resulting image as preprocessing For off-line handwritten Korean character recognition. So it proposes application of effective watershed algorithm for segmentation of character region and background region in gray level character image and segmentation function for binarization image and segmentation function for binarization by extracted watershed image. Besides it proposes thinning methods which effectively extracts skeleton through conditional test mask considering running time and quality. of skeleton, estimates efficiency of existing methods and this paper's methods as running time and quality. Watershed image conversion uses prewitt operator for gradient image conversion, extracts local minima considering 8-neighborhood pixel. And methods by using difference of mean value is used in region merging step, Converted watershed image by means of this methods separates effectively character region and background region applying to segmentation function. Average execution time on the previous method was 2.16 second and on this paper method was 1.72 second. We prove that this paper's method removed noise effectively with overlap stroke as compared with the previous method.

  • In this paper, in order to find effective features which can handle variations in off-line handwritten numerals, we performed a comparative study on various sets of features. Results of experimental performance comparison shows that 4- directional features using contours and features which combined cross distance, cross, mesh and projection features are very effective for off-line handwritten numerals recognition in terms of recognition rates and recognition time. And in order to surmount limitation of recognition rate by a single neural network. we proposed a modularized neural network using majority voting and reliability factor with complex feature that mix effective features together. In order to verify the performance of the proposed method, the handwritten numeral databases of Concordia University of Canada and Dong-A University of Korea are used in the experiments. With the database of Concordia University, the recognition rate of 97.1%, the rejection rate of 1.5%, the error rate of 1.4% and the reliability of 98.5% are obtained ; and with the database of Dong-A University, there cognition rate of 98%, the rejection rate of 1.2%, the error rate of 0.8%, the reliability o99.1% are obtained.

  • For the handwritten digit recognition, this paper Proposes a hierarchical Gator features extraction method and a Bayesian network for them. Proposed Gator features are able to represent hierarchically different level information and Bayesian network is constructed to represent hierarchically structured dependencies among these Gator features. In order to extract such features, we define Gabor filters level by level and choose optimal Gabor filters by using Fisher's Linear Discriminant measure. Hierarchical Gator features are extracted by optimal Gabor filters and represent more localized information in the lower level. Proposed methods were successfully applied to handwritten digit recognition with well-known naive Bayesian classifier, k-nearest neighbor classifier. and backpropagation neural network and showed good performance.

  • We present a method to modify the recognition of neural networks by the fuzzy inference in a handwritten digit recognition with large deformations, and we verified the method by the experiment. The neural networks take long time in learning and recognize 100% on the learning pattern. But the neural networks don't show a good recognition on the testing pattern. So, we apply the modified method as the fuzzy inference. As a result, the recognition and false recognition of neural networks was improved 90.2% and 9.8% respectively at 89.6% and 10.4% initially. This approach decreased especially the false recognition on digit 3, 5. We used the density of digit to extract the fuzzy membership function in this experiment. But, because the handwritten digit have varified input patterns, we will get a better recognition by extracting varifed characteristics and applying the composite fuzzy inference. We also propose the application of fuzzy inference on matching the input pattern, than applying strictly the fuzzy inference.

  • This paper presents an efficient method for estimationg and correcting the slant of off-line handwritten Hangul strings. In the proposed method, after extracting contours from input image.Hough tranform is applied to the contours to detect lines and estimate slants of the lines. When Hough trans form is applied to the contours, pixels which are not parts of the same stroke could be detected as a line.In order to exclude these lines from slant estimation process, detected lines which have the length less than threshold are eliminated.Experiments have been performed with address images which were extracted from live envelopes provided by Seoul Mail Center.Experimental results show that the proposed method is superior to the previous methods, which had been done with handwritten English strings.in estimation the slant of off-line handwritten Hangul strings.

  • Recent researches in the recognition system have shown that SVM (Support Vector Machine) classifiers often have superior recognition rates in comparison to other classifiers. In this paper, we present the handwritten numeral recognition algorithm using SVM classifiers. The numeral features used in our algorithm are mesh features, directional features by Kirsch operators and concavity features, where first two features represent the foreground information of numerals and the last feature represents the background information of numerals. These features are complements each of the other. Since SVM is basically a binary classifier, it is required to construct and combine several binary SVMs to get the multi-class classifiers. We use two strategies for implementing multi-class SVM classifiers: "one against one" and "one against the rest", and examine their performances on the features used. The efficiency of our method is tested by the CENPARMI handwritten numeral database, and the recognition rate of 98.45% is achieved.

  • In this paper, we studied the use of the foreground and background features and SVM classifier to improve the accuracy of offline handwritten numeral recognition. The foreground features are two directional features: directional gradient feature by Kirsch operators and directional stroke feature by projection runlength, and the background feature is concavity feature which is extracted from the convex hull of the numeral, where concavity feature functions as complement to the directional features. During classification of the numeral, these three features are combined to obtain good discrimination power. The efficiency of our feature sets was tested by recognition experiments on the handwritten numeral database CENPARMI, where we used SVM with RBF kernel as a classifier. The experimental results showed that each combination of two or three features gave a better performance than a single feature. This means that each single feature works with a different discriminating power and cooperates with other features to enhance the recognition accuracy. By using the composite feature of the three features, we achieved a recognition rate of 98.90%.

  • This paper describes an off-line method for recognizing totally unconstrained handwritten digits using modified chaotic neural networks(MCNN). The chaotic neural networks(CNN) is modified to be a useful network for solving complex pattern problems by enforcing dynamic characteristics and learning process. Since the MCNN has the characteristics of highly nonlinear dynamics in structure and neuron itself, it can be an appropriate network for the robust classification of complex handwritten digits. Digit identification starts with extraction of features from the raw digit images and then recognizes digits using the MCNN based classifier. The performance of the MCNN classifier is evaluated on the numeral database of Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. For the relative comparison of recognition performance, the MCNN classifier is compared with the recurrent neural networks(RNN) classifier. Experimental results show that the classification rate is 98.0%. It indicates that the MCNN classifier outperforms the RNN classifier as well as other classifiers that have been reported on the same database.

  • We introduce a novel feature extraction scheme for online handwritten digit based on utilizing Zernike moment and angulation feature. The time sequential signal from mouse movement on the writing pad is described as a sequence of consecutive points on the x-y plane. So, we can create data-set which are successive and time-sequential pixel position data by preprocessing. Data preprocessed is used for Zernike moment and angulation feature extraction. this feature is scale-, translation-, and rotation-invariant. The extracted specific feature is fed to a BP(backpropagation) neural network, which in turn classifies it as one of the nine digits. In this paper, proposed method not noly show high recognition rate but also need less learning data for 200 handwritten digit data.

  • Researches on the recognition of handwritten script have been conducted under the assumption that the isolated recognition units are provided as inputs. However, in practical recognition system designs, providing the isolated recognition unit is an challenge due to various writing syles. This paper proposes an approach for segmenting words from lines of unconstrained handwritten text, without help of recognition. In contrast to the conventional approaches which are based on physical gaps between connected components, clues that reflect the author's writing style, in terms of spacing, are extracted and utilized for the segmentation using a simple neural network. The clues are from character segments and include normalized heights and intervals of the segments. Effectiveness of the proposed approach compared with the conventional connected component based approaches in terms of word segmentation performance was evaluated by experiments.
