In this paper, we address the problem of fast handover support for future internet networks. The current mobility support protocols, for example Proxy Mobile IPv6, follow a centralized architecture in which a mobility controller is used to manage intra-network handovers that gives rise to high handover latency. To handle this problem, we propose a novel distributed mobility control architecture in which gateways in the network can exchange user information with neighbour gateways to support intra-network handovers, the mobility controller is only needed in case of inter-network handovers. Simulation results show that our architecture reduce approximately 20% intra-network handover latency than Proxy Mobile IPv6.

The deployment of mobile femtocellular networks can enhance the service quality for the users inside the vehicles. The deployment of mobile femtocells generates a lot of handover calls. Also, numbers of group handover scenarios are found in mobile femtocellular network deployment. The ability to seamlessly switch between the femtocells and the macrocell networks is a key concern for femtocell network deployment. However, until now there is no effective and complete handover scheme for the mobile femtocell network deployment. Also handover between the backhaul networks is a major concern for the mobile femtocellular network deployment. In this paper, we propose handover control between the access networks for the individual handover cases. Call flows for the handover between the backhaul networks of the macrocell-to-macrocell case are proposed in this paper. We also propose the link switching for the FSO based backhaul networks. The proposed resource allocation scheme ensures the negligible handover call dropping probability as well as higher bandwidth utilization.

Recently, UAV manufacturers are developing UAV system in a form that can be controlled by CS regardless of UAV kind and using STANAG 4586 interface standard considering Interoperability. STANAG 4586 is a NATO military standard developed to control various UAVs with standardized equipment. In such a case, UAV handover will inevitably occur and it is one of the most important function for safe UAV flight in platform using STANAG 4586. In the future combat situation where collaboration between AV and UAV is anticipated, seamless handover of UAV is a part of continuous research. In this paper, we propose requirements for UAV handover based on ARP 4761 safety assessment and analyze feasibility of the requirements by comparing UAV handover process in STANAG 4586. As a result of the comparative analysis, the proposed handover requirements based on ARP 4761 includes all the handover procedures of STANAG 4586 and present additional considerations for SOP creation and CS development. Applying the proposed handover requirements in the UAV development process can reduce the probability of loss of UAV control over the handover process and it can be expected to help improve the safety of UAV.

The ability to seamlessly switch between the macro networks and femtocell networks is a key driver for femtocell network deployment. The handover procedures for the integrated femtocell/macrocell networks differ from the existing handovers. Some modifications of existing network and protocol architecture for the integration of femtocell networks with the existing macrocell networks are also essential. These modifications change the signal flow for handover procedures due to different 2-tier cell (macrocell and femtocell) environment. The handover between two networks should be performed with minimum signaling. A frequent and unnecessary handover is another problem for hierarchical femtocell/macrocell network environment that must be minimized. This work studies the details mobility management schemes for small and medium scale femtocell network deployment. To do that, firstly we present two different network architectures for small scale and medium scale WCDMA femtocell deployment. The details handover call flow for these two network architectures and CAC scheme to minimize the unnecessary handovers are proposed for the integrated femtocell/macrocell networks. The numerical analysis for the proposed M/M/N/N queuing scheme and the simulation results of the proposed CAC scheme demonstrate the handover call control performances for femtocell environment.

The constrained application protocol (CoAP) can be used for remotely controlling various sensor devices in Internet of Things (IoT) networks. In CoAP, to support the handover of a mobile sensor device, service discovery and message transmission needs to be repeated, although doing so would increase the handover delay significantly. To address this limitation of CoAP, a centralized CoAP scheme has been proposed. However, it tends to result in performance degradation for an inter-domain handover case. In this letter, we propose a distributed CoAP handover scheme to support the inter-domain handover. In the proposed scheme, a distributed mobility agent (DMA) is used for managing the location of mobile sensors in a domain and performing handover control operations with its neighboring DMAs in a distributed manner. A performance comparison reveals that the proposed scheme offers a performance improvement of up to 29.5% in terms of the handover delay.

The handover area is the region where a call can be handled by the base stations in any of the adjacent cells, and handover duration time is viewed as the time an mobile station resides inthe handover area. In this paper, analytic model to estimate the distribution function(df) of the handover duration time is proposed. Based on the df of the handover duration time, the simulation and anlytic models for the First Come first Serve(FCFS) scheme are presented, and the simulation results for the Measurement Based Prioritization Scheme(MBPS) are compared with the analytic results of the FCFS handover scheme. Those results show that the MBPS scheme is seen to provide lower handover failures than FCFS queueing with slightly increasing the new call blocking probability.

Today, as the hierarchical cellular system is getting more attention than before, some recent studies introduce delay based admission control (AC) scheme which delays the admission to the macro-embedded small cell for a relatively short time to prevent unnecessary handover caused by the short-term visitors of the small cell area. In such delay based ACs, when we use improper delay parameter, the system frequently makes incorrect handover decisions such as where unnecessary handover is allowed due to too short delaying, or where necessary handover is denied due to too long delaying. In order to avoid these undesirable situations as much as possible, we develop a new delay parameter decision method based on probabilistic cell residence time approximations. By the extensive numerical and analytical evaluations, we determine the proper delay parameter which prevents the incorrect handover decision as much as possible. We expect our delay parameter decision method can be useful system administration tips in hierarchical cellular system where delay based AC is adopted.
This Letter proposes a scheme that supports a fast handover effectively in hierarchical mobile IPv6 networks (F-HMIPv6) by optimizing the associated data and control flows during the handover. By NS-2 simulation, we show that the proposed scheme can give better handover performance than a simple combination of existing schemes.
The SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol) implementation with the DAR (Dynamic Address Reconfiguration) extension is called the mSCTP (Mobile SCTP) that is proposed recently for mobility support in transport layer. The mSCTP does not satisfy short handover latency for real-time applications and it has no specific handover decision mechanisms. In this paper, we propose fast handover schemes for mobile nodes that are moving into different subnet using pre-acquisition RA (Router Advertisement) and L3 trigger for improving handover performance. Furthermore, we introduce three specific methods which are RA cache, FMIPv6 (Fast Handovers for Mobile IPv6) and dual interface and how proposed scheme can be interoperated with handover process respectively. Finally, we show two experimental results which are the mSCTP and the mSCTP using FMIPv6 on Linux platforms. Experimental results show that handover performance is improved with reducing the time of receiving RA which takes most of total handover latency.

Streaming video has become a popular form of transferring media over the wired/wireless network. TCP-friendly rate control (TFRC) is used as a streaming media transport protocol. Using the TCP congestion response function and current network conditions, TFRC adjusts its sending rate to yield the maximum TCP-friendly throughput. Since TFRC was designed for applications that would prefer to maintain a slowly-changing sending rate, it is less responsive to changes in handover between wireless heterogeneous networks such as 3G network, WLAN, and so on. This paper shows a new TFRC method for vertical handover over wireless heterogeneous network. The proposed TFRC method has features of low quality interruption and fast rate adaptation to a new target network. The simulation results show that the proposed one provides better QoS and throughput support than the traditional TFRC scheme during vertical handover.
