The Medical Exchange of "SangHanChangHwaHunJiJip" ("상한창화훈지집(桑韓唱和塤篪集)"의 의학문답(醫學問答) 기록과 조일의학(朝日醫學) 교류)

  • This study examined from "SangHanChangHwaHunJiJip" how medical exchange between doctors of Joseon and Japan affected medical science of Japan. "SangHanChangHwaHunJiJip" is a record that organized the written conversation between doctors and scholars of the Joseon and Edo period when the delegation so-called Joseon Tongsinsa visited Japan in 1719. Even though "SangHanChangHwaHunJiJip" was written by Japanese, but it was comprised of Joseon's advanced medical ideology, especially "DongEuiBogam" that has occupied an important part of the Joseon medical ideology. As a matter of fact, "SangHanChang HwaHunJiJip" contains general theme and medical subject. But until now, it has been hardly studied by medical historians. Many studies were generally made related to Joseon Tongsinsa, a governmental delegation, focused on literary and cultural exchange between Joseon and Japan by historians. "SangHanChangHwaHunJiJip" is no exception to this trend. We can find that doctors of the Joseon and Edo period entered into colloquium, a form of group discussion, about the clinical theme in "SangHanChangHwaHunJiJip". Concretely, the conversation between doctors of Joseon and Japan was about infant disease, infectious disease, folk remedies, medical herbs, moxa cautery, acupuncture, the study of nature, the study of medical books, etc. For example, when doctors of Japan ask a confirmed disease, doctors of Joseon explained it particularly. They had a great effect on in every cultural aspect of Japan, especially its medical field. Through this study of the medical questions and answers in "SangHanChangHwaHunJiJip", I came to know that the doctors of GiHae envoys gave great influence to the medical knowledge of Japan and the GiHae inherited and developed the medical tradition of SinMyo envoys. Through the examination of this study, I could deduct that "JeongJeongDongEuiBogam" which was published by the government of the Edo period is due to not only the contents of DongEuiBogam's advanced medical thought, but also the doctors of GiHae envoy. Also, "SangHanChangHwaHunJiJip" gives us an idea that doctors of GiHae envoys have medical trend of the OnBoHakFa and a group of Japanese doctors has medical trend of the study of nature. I am confident that the improvement of medical science and natural history of the Edo period is due to influence of medical exchange between Joseon and Japan. "SangHanChangHwaHunJiJip" confirms that medical exchange between two countries affected doctors and scholars of the Edo period.

A Study on the Government-controlled Lotus Ponds Constructed in Han-Yang during Chosun-Dynasty (조선시대 한양에 조성된 관영의 연지에 관한 연구 -동지, 서지, 남 지를 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the ponds which were artificially constructed around the castle gate of Han-yang, the capital in Chosun-Dynasty. In order to conduct the research on landscape history, it is necessary to have a field survey and to collect and analyze historic documents. But this study was based on the historic documents published in Chosun-Dynasty because no relics of ponds are found nowadays. There Tong-ji(eastern pond) outside of the East Gate, Seo-ji(western pond) outside of the West Gate and Nam-ji(southern pond) outside of the South Gate. They were constructed as lotus ponds and managed by the landscape management office, called Chang-weon-seo in the ministry of Industry. Tong-ji and Nam-ji were constructed according to geomantic principles. In case of Seo-ji, the situation of construction differed from Tong-Ji in some points. As for the shape of Seo-ji, it was a rectangular pond and had an islet in the middle where flowering plants had been planted. These ponds were enjoyed by the people lived in Han-yang because they were located near the street. Particularly, people in Han-Yang enjoyed the beautiful scenery of lotus flowers planted in the ponds.

Han Wonjin's Criticism of Kim Changhyup's Theory of Jigak (남당 한원진의 김창협 지각론 비판)

  • This paper aims to analyse Han Wonjin's criticism centered on Kim Changhyup's theory of Jigak(知覺). In the early 18th century, Kim Changhyup whose position considered as the leader of Rakhak(洛學) circle was the central figure in the debate on the controversial subject of Jigak. Han Wonjin as an opinion leader of Hohak(湖學)'s legacy was required to argue with his counterpart in order to establish his circle's standpoint. The main issue they discussed was the relationship between Ji(智) and Jigak. Kim contends that Ji and Jigak belong to different categories, and that the substance-function(體用) relation cannot be applied to them. According to him, the relation between Ji and Jigak is that of Do(道) and Gi(器). Similarly, the relation between Sim(心) and Sung(性) is that of subject and object. He also maintains that Jigak is not the phenomenalized mode of Ji, but the innate capability that employs Sung as the source of morality and turns it into feelings. In contrast, Han argues that Ji, as a ontological foundation of Jigak, is what enables Jigak to be a moral activity. In criticizing Kim Changhyup, Han maintains that if one denies the relation between Ji and Jigak, then one would have to characterize Jigak as a blind function with no moral sense. If one admits Jigak can have moral contents on its own without the connection with Ji, then one would have to allow two moral foundation, which leads one's idea into heretical beliefs. Han holds that Jigak can a moral function only when it is grounded upon Ji. In conclusion, Han emphasizes Ji as the base of Jigak that enables Jigak to realize morality while Kim emphasizes the role of Jigak as the principal agent of moral activity.

  • 'BUDDEUMI and BUDDEUMI's treatment; is a new remedy of the synchronous combination of cupping boil and moxibustion for the exclusion of human body's waste product. 'BUDDEUMI and BUDDEUMI's' treatment' wishes the reachfor improving the effect of cupping boil and moxibustion by the synchronous combination. As the negative pressure of cupping and the hot cure of moxa are made up of BUDDEUMI structural character. The effects of BUDDEMI's treatment are observed on the strengthening of skin breation and the detoxification of blood waste material. Therefor 'BUDDEUMI and BUDDEMI's treatment' is expected for the healthy article of Senior-Friendly.

Study of 'Ji-Qi-Shang-Chong' in Shang-han-lun's 15th Text (상한론(傷寒論) 15조(條)의 '기기상충(其氣上衝)'에 대한 고찰)

  • This study is about 'Ji-Qi-Shang-Chong(其氣上衝)' in Shang-han-lun("傷寒論")'s 15th text. Shang-han-lun is a basic text about pathology of Traditional Korean Medicine written by Zhang-Zhong-Jing(張仲景). In that text, there are so many cases of people having some symptoms, how to treat them, and which herb medicine to give them, and the side effects of wrong treatments. In those cases, there is symptom said 'Ji-Qi-Shang-Chong(其氣上衝)' in the 15th text. But there is no detailed description about that. So this study is aimed at studying exactly meaning of the 15th text's 'Ji-Qi-Shang-Chong(其氣上衝)' by comparing historical medical practitioners and analyzing with the bibliography, pathology, herb pharmacology, herbal medicine, pharmacology part. In the bibliographical analysis, this sentence has been transmitted from original Shan-han-lun written by Zhang-Zhong-Jing(張仲景). Former part of this sentence "太陽病, 下之後, 其氣上衝者, 可與桂枝湯". is most correspondent part with Zhong-Jing(仲景)'s. And there is correctional possibility about latter part.

A study on the wall finishing process with 「Han-ji」, an eco-friendly material (친환경 실내마감재 한지의 도배공정 연구)

  • Interior material covering as the final process of house-building, critically influences not only aesthetic character but also air quality of indoor space. Wall covering today, however, caused a serious social problem because of chemicals contained in the industrial wallpaper and artificial glue. In this context, Korean traditional wall covering of Han-ji can be an alternative model due to it's ecological character. Recently 'Hanok' attracts public attention, since society and people become to appreciate the unique beauty and value of our traditional culture. The values include natural beauty, emotional character, and environment-friendliness. Recognizing this, this paper intended to scrutinize the operating process of Han-ji as an interior finish material. Historical research method was employed, tracing the related articles in old literature and interviewing with the witness of the experienced expert. Thereby, healthier and unique aesthetic indoor environment can be expected to be sustainable along with the rich cultural life of ancestors.

An Experimental Study on the Effect of Hanji Windows on Indoor Air Temperature and Humidity Control (한지창호의 실내 온.습도 조절효과에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The tightness of windows have devoted to the improvement of thermal insulation and energy saving in buildings. But it is known that this tightness causes some side effects such as low ventilation, low capacity to humidity and temperature control and these are not profitable for inhabitants. To act on these side effects, Korean traditional windows which are composed of Han-Ji(Koreand traditional paper) and Chang-Sal(Korean traditional wooden frame) have been studied to get a reasonable solutions for these problems. In this study, to compare the thermal and humidity control performance of current window(12 mm pair) and Korean traditional windows, frames which are made of existing window and Korean traditional windows are adapted to scale model house and then humidity and temperature of in and out of scale model house are measured and analysed. The results of this study are followings ; 1) When Korean traditional window charges 20cm(1/8 of total window area) from total window area, Han-Ji window has higher thermal insulation than that of existing window in daytime. There is the most big thermal difference when double faced with double-ply Han-Ji window is placed to mock-up house. In night-time, the temperature difference is very small so this means that Korean traditional window is good to cover direct sunlight in daytime and reduce the temperature of balcony. One faced with one-ply han-Ji window has the best humidity penetration performance among three type of Korean traditional windows. 2) When Korean window area enlarged to 40cm(1/4 of total window area), the function of 40cm width Han-Ji window is higher than that of 20cm's. This means that enlargement of Han-Ji window cover direct sunlight more and is more efficient in humidity penetration.

Criticism on Cho Ji-hoon's Recognition of Han Yong-un (조지훈의 한용운 인식방법 비판)

  • Cho Ji-hoon was a leading figure on the discussion of recognition on Han Yong-un, particularly the post-liberation period. During the Japanese colonial era, he addressed Han Yong-un as the representative of national poet, and evaluated Han's poems as the models of rebellious nationalistic poetry. Such evaluation by Cho set the precedent of basic perspectives and methodologies on how to recognize Han Yong-un in the present day. This paper analyzes three studies on Han Yong-un, conducted by Cho ji-hoon. We also examine how Cho created his logic of recognizing Han as a national poet, and his poems as nationalistic poetry. Accordingly, this paper has separated recognitions on poet studies and work studies, and further explored how each recognition has consistency with Cho ji-hoon's historical and literary perception. As a result, the following has been concluded: the basis of Cho ji-hoon's recognition on the life and works of Han Yong-un was premised on Cho's understanding of the world from a standpoint of history of ideas, the concept of nation was regarded as an absolute value that binds disparate ideas together, and the combination of nationalism and poetry has been expressed through the logic of nationalistic poetry and the notion which equalizes the poet to a classical scholar. It was further concluded that such equalizing logic contains some logical contradictions derived from integration between universal rights and national sovereignty, and nation and Buddhism. Therefore, it can be said that other possible interpretations on the role of a poet were not fully discussed, but remain bounded. Last but not the least, this paper critically tries to perceive Cho's recognition on Han Yong-un, and accentuates the necessity of new interpretations of Han's poems, apart from those based on nationalism.
