For the purpose of ascertaining the status of physical growth and food habit of obese children, a study was made of 1086 primary school children ranging between 2nd and 3ra grades living in Kwang-ju City in Korea. 66 subjects were selected from an anthropometrical point of view and they were classified into two groups, an obese group and a control group, according to their relative body weight. Food habits of each group were observed by means of questionnaires. In the statistical analysis of the data, percentage calculation and T-score test were used. The results of the study can be summarized as follows; 1) Viewed from relative body weight, 3.0% of the 1,086 subjects turned out to be obese, and the measure of skinfold showed 2.4%. 2) Physical growth of the obese growth is superior to that of the control group in all aspects. 3) The average score of food preference by means of Hedonic scaling method by the obese group is 3.90, while that of food preference by the control group is 3.76. The most favored food by the obese group is ice cream (4.91), while that of most favored food by the control group is banana (4.75). The statistically meaningful foods of the two groups are cucumber (0.02>p>0.01), orange (p<0.02), peach(0.05>p>0.02), watermelon (p <0.01) and ice cream (p<0.01). The score of food preference for protein foods by the obese group is 3.78 and that of food preference by the control group is 3.57(0.05>p>0.02). The excessive food intake per meal of the obese group is 45.4%, while that of the control group is 19.7% (0.05>p>0.02). Ratio of taking severely unbalanced food by the obese group is 15.1%, while that of the control group is 50.0% (p<0.01). 4) 30.3% of mothers of the obese group is fat, while 15.1% of mothers of the control group is fat (p<0.01). Concerning body weight at birth, 90.9% of the obese group and 63.6% of the control group are above-average weight. (p <0.01). From the results shown above, the obesity in children is almost due to food. It is hoped, therefore, that overeating be discouraged through the nutrition education.
Purpose: This review examined literature relevant to adolescent's health behavior in order to identify key behaviors and factors related to health behaviors for targeting health promotion interventions. Method: A critical review of 29 research articles was carried out using the guidelines suggested by Cooper. Result: The majority of the studies were descriptive and cross-sectional. Generally. the study includes sub-dimensions such as general hygiene and daily life habit, safety and accident prevention, nutrition and eating (tobacco, drinking), exercise, mental health and stress management, health duty (drug, health examination, disease prevention). Factors highly related to health behaviors were age, living areas, economic status, parent health behaviors, parent health concern, social support, friends influence, self-efficacy, self-esteem, locus of control, and the perceived health status. Sex, parent education and health knowledge were not related to health behaviors of adolescents. Conclusion: Several conceptual and methodological problems were identified in the studies review, such as restricted conceptualization of health behaviors and sampling issues which limit the generalizability of the study outcomes. Further research is needed to enhance the concept clarification and generalizablity of the study results.
Purpose of this study was to investigate the health status and life style of middle-aged people in Daejon. The subjects expressed more fear for disease as getting older(p<0.01). Sixty six percent of the subjects have suffered in the past or suffer at present certain kinds of disease. The older they are, the more disease they have. The alimentary disease, neuralgia, and arthritis were the most popular disease. The eye strain and exhaustion of body were indicated more frequently in fifties than in thirties or forties(p<0.01). They considered excercise as the most important factor to maintain health status, and then moderation in diet, relaxation, rest, decrease of alcohol intake, no smoking. Forty three percent of them were non-drinker. The number of drinker was four times more in male than female and increased as getting younger(p<0.01). Only male revealed smoker and 29% of them smoked 10-20 cigarettes per day. The number of smoker decreased as getting older(p<0.01). Male played exercise more regularly than female and subjects have better exercise habit as getting older(p<0.01). This study suggests that practical programs for self-health control should be developed for playing exercise regularly for female and for considering nutrition, no smoking, and no drinking in the daily life for male.

The effects of the vegetable diet on the levels of the serum lipids, particularly the level of the serum total cholesterol which is most concerned with coronary heart disease (CHD) were investigated in 30 male SDA (Seventh Day Adventists) group and 30 male omnivorous group (control group). SDA participated in this study intaked relatively few animal origin foods whereas they intaked plant origin foods largely; they seldom or sometimes intaked meats, fishes, butter, margarine, beverages and coffee, but often unrefined cereals, legumes, vegetables and fruits. In the both systolic pressure and diastolic pressure, there was no difference between two groups. The levels of the serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid were lower in SDA group than in the omnivorous group. Among them the difference was statistically significant in the level of the serum total cholesterol. HDL-cholesterol was more or less higher in SDA group than in the omnivorous group, but the difference was no significant. The result that SDA group had lower level of the serum total cholesterol than the omnivorous group suggested that that they might be less prone to CHD than the omnivorous group. Though this possibility, however, was derived from the fact of the lower level of serum total cholesterol of SDA group, it might by partly responsible for their habit that they never smoke and drink alcohols and coffee.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among nutrient intake, life style, and serum lipids level in 108 healthy middle-aged men in Taegu. A convenient method was to assess nutritional intake. Anthropometric measuement of body weight and hight were measured and average energy expenditure was calculated. The mean body mass index(BMI) was 22.8$\pm$2.4 and it was in the middle of the mean BMI of Korean men. Obesity rate of study subject were 13.2%. Daily energy intake was not sufficient as 88.4% of recommended dietary allowances and the energy percentage of carboydrate, fat protein was 65 : 21 : 14. Mean intake of vitamin A, B1, C and Ca were lower than RDA. There was a highly significant negative correlation between the systolic blood pressure and calcium intake(r=-0.28, p<0.05). Smokers showed significantly higher blood glucose than non-smokers. Skipping meals and uneven diurnal distribution(no breakfast and large evening meals) are associated with high triglyceride level in this population. There was a highly significant correlation between body weight and plasma lipids. Energy expenditure was negatively correlated with plasma triglyceride level. Especially, atherogenic index was significantly lower in job-time physically active worker than that in sedentary worker. Above data provides valuable imformation to the community for program planning as well as to health providers who work individual male adults to meet their nutrition needs and to control blood lipids.
This study, based on stages of behavioral change, was aimed at suggesting strategies for the adoption of moderate drinking habits for community-based health education designed to help rural people. An interview survey was conducted during the period from March 4 to April 5, 2002 by sampling 467 rural people living in 6 villages covered by a public healthcare clinic. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; 1. The perceived non-moderate drinkers were less prepared for behavioral change. 2. The heavier drinking habits were ‘drinking alone’, ‘meals accompanied by drinking’ and ‘drinking twice or more at a time’. The agricultural off-season and the custom of brewing liquor at home were negative environmental factors for moderate drinking. 3. The predisposing factors affecting moderate drinking were recognition of health, expectation of the drinking effect, etiquette encouraging overdrinking and control of drinking. The reinforcing factors were stress from ordinary life and perception of being loved. The enabling factor was accessibility to the public healthcare clinic. 4. Rural residents are less motivated to participate in health education for moderate drinking. Based on the above findings, health education strategies for each stage can be suggested as follows: 1) Pre-contemplation stage: improvement of perception, motivation, sharing of experiences, and reawakening. 2) Contemplation/preparation stag e: measurement of value, departure from the inertia against a change, formation of a habit, and reinforcement of the behavior. 3) Action/maintenance stage: creation of a social atmosphere, encouragement of participation, change of life style, and improvement of environment.
Single crystals of the superconducting Y-Ba-Cu oxide were grown by a flux technique. Stoichiometric mixture with excess BaO and CuOcontent was melted at 130$0^{\circ}C$, followed by fast cooling to 108$0^{\circ}C$ to prevent crystallizing of CuO. It was then reheated to 110$0^{\circ}C$ followed by being held at this temperature to control the number of nuclei, and cooled by 5$^{\circ}C$/hr to 80$0^{\circ}C$. This procedure was repeated with various compositions and crystals were obtained in cavity. Molten solution was seperated to two parts : the upper part of almost CuO and the rest of different composition. Appropriate composition of flux was 30mol% BaO and 70mol% CuO due to the seperation of molten solution. Single crystals have the habit of thin plate with good developed (001) crystal face, XRD, EDAX and single crystal X-ray investigations were carried out. The grown crystals have tetragonal structure with the lattice parameters a=b=3.84$\AA$, c=11.7$\AA$, and the space group P4/mmm. The crystal surface were observed by SEM.
The purpose of this study was to compare health status and diery health practice of middle-aged rural adults with or without hypertension. Eighty three subjects (mean age : 55.6$\pm$11.9), were composed of 22 males and 61 females. Data collection includes serum and urine collections for health status and the questionnaire including dietary habit of salt, sugar, dietary fiber and fat intake for dietary health practice The results were as follows : The subjects were composed 23 persons of under 55 year-old group and 19 persons of over 65 year-old group. Of the 83 subjects, 28.9% were recognized hypertension and 33.7% were measured hypertension by systolic blood pressure. In the aspects of dietary health practice, hypertension group showed that smoking and weight control practice and were significantly low score, alcohol and dietary fiber intake were high score. Hypertension group showed higher frequency in diabetes mellitus and lower in gastrointestinal complain and liver disease. than normal blood pressure group. Serum, TG, bilirubin, BUN and cholesterol, were significantly higher in hypertension than normal blood pressure group. The mean values of serum albumin and urinary creatinine excretion in hypertension group werw significantly lower. The consciousness of health status was lower in hypertension group and also attributed to worse personal feeling health by modified CMI test.
In order to investigate the relationship among physical status, eating habits and life style, this survey was carried out by questionnaire in 1996. College students(413 cases) who resided in Chuncheon answered. The results are as follows: 1) The means of height and weight were $173.9\pm{5.0cm}$, $64.5\pm{8.3kg}$64.5$\pm$8.3kg in male students and $160.9\pm{4.5cm}$, $51.1\pm{5.8kg}$ in female students. 2) Under 20 of BMI(Body Mass Index) were 23.0% of male students and 58.3% of female students. 6.7% of males and 3.0% of females were over 25 of BMI. 3) There was a significant relationship between the type of favorite snacks and gender. There was a significant difference of BMI according to the level of the frequency and the amount of drinking alcoholic beverages. 72.6% of subjects took exercise regularly. But the BMI of subjects taking regular exercise and watching the weight tended to be higher than that of subjects not doing so. 4) Most students(78.5%) skipped breakfast, which was higher in the self-boarding students in than any other. It was because of the lack of time that they skipped their meals. This study suggests that a comprehensive nutrition education program is needed for college students in self-boarding houses and dormitories to improve their eating habits about skipping meals, and especially for female students to prevent inappropriate weight control.
The objective of this study was to evaluate college students’dietary and health behaviors in relation to their Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality preferences. Dietary and health behaviors were surveyed for 444 college students who performed the MBTI personality test. Only 6.1% of the subjects regularly had three meals a day, while 27.1% ate breakfast every day. Fifty-six point nine percent of the students took less than 15 minutes to eat a meal and had the habit of eating fast. The number of food groups they ate was, on average, 2.74 and was eaten mainly at dinner. This showed that college students did not eat a large variety of foods. Eighty-two percent of the subjects drank alcoholic beverages, 21.4% smoked, and 69.3% exercised. In addition, 73.9% of them were not satisfied with their body image, but they were not eager to try weight control. There were not many significant differences between Extraversion (E)-Introversion (I), Sensing (S)-iNtuition (N), and Thinking (T)-Feeling (F) in their dietary and heath behaviors, although some gender differences existed. Significantly better dietary and health behaviors were shown in subjects preferring Judging (J) rather than Perceiving (P). There behaviors included eating breakfast, regularly eating three meals a day, smoking less, exercising more and having a lower tendency to night-eating. The personality preference of J-P could be useful index for nutritional education and counseling or behavior modification programs for obese people.
