This paper describes a design experience of a low-cost 6 DOF spatial tracker system where relative low accuracy and relatively long ranges, wireless communication will be achieved by means of low cost accelerometers and gyros with contemporary microprocessor. However, there are two key problems; one is the bias drift problem and the other is that single or double integration of acceleration signal suffers not only from noise but also from nonlinear effects caused by gravity. To be specific, beginning and stopping of hand motions needs to be accurately detected to initiate and terminate integration process to get position and pose of the hand from accelerometer and gyro signals, since errors due to noise and/or hand-shaking motions accumulated by integration processes. Several experimental results are shown to validate our proposed algorithms.

In this paper, we propose a triple nested PID control scheme for stable hovering of a quadrotor and propose a complementary filter based sensor fusion technique to improve the performance of attitude, altitude and velocity measurement. The triple nested controller has a structure in which a double nested attitude controller that has the angular velocity PD controller in inner loop and the angular PI controller in outer loop, is nested in a velocity control loop to enable stable hovering even in the case of disturbance. We also propose a sensor fusion technique by applying a complementary filter in order to reduce the noise and drift error included in the acceleration and gyro sensor and to measure the velocity by fusing image, gyro, and acceleration sensor. In order to verity the performance, we applied the proposed control and measurement scheme to hovering control of quadrotor.
This paper presents the development and control of a two wheeled car-like mobile robot using balancing mechanism whose heading control is done by turning the handle. The mobile inverted pendulum is a combined system of a mobile robot and an inverted pendulum system. A sensor fusion technique of low cost sensors such as a gyro sensor and a tilt sensor to measure the balancing angle of the inverted pendulum robot system accurately is implemented. Experimental studies of the trajectory following control task has been conducted by command of steering wheel while balancing.

The purpose of this research is to improve the reliability of automobile navigation system that utilizes the magnetic compass for localization. On account of its sensitiveness against the dynamic external interference of the magnetic field, the electronic compass itself is not accurate enough to be used for the localization compared to the gyro-compass. To overcome this shortcoming, in this research, a robust electronic compass is designed by using two magnetic compasses to cancel out the dynamic interences efficiently. That is, a dual compass predictive calibration algorithm against irregular external interference of magnetic field is newly proposed and implemented in this paper. When the dynamic interference can be eliminated from the electronic compass, it becomes much accurate than the gyro-based system that suffers from the accumulative drift error. The reliability and performance of the designed system have been verified through the real driving experiments.

To calculate the attitude in ARS(Attitude Reference System) using 3 gyros and 3 accelerometers, gyro drift must be compensated with accelerometer to avoid divergence of attitude error. Kalman filter is most popular method to integrate those two sensor outputs. In this paper, new Kalman filtering method is proposed for roll and pitch attitude estimation. New states are defined to make linear equation and algorithm for changing Kalman filter parameters is proposed to ignore disturbances of acceleration. This algorithm can be easily applied to low cost ARS.

Measurement or estimation of tilt angle is necessary for balancing robot such as Segway which is considered as a next generation transportation vehicle. However, it requires high-cost accurate sensors to hold balancing during stationary and moving situations. In this paper, a tilt angle estimation of a plane rotating in a vertical plane using low-cost sensors. Estimation using a set of 2-axis orthogonal accelerometers along with an inaccurate rate gyro has been considered. Feasibility and performance of the proposed technique has been verified through some experimental results.
Star tracker placement configuration is proposed and the properness of the placement configuration is verified for star tracker's sun avoidance angle requirement. Precision attitude determination system is successfully designed using a gyro-star tracker inertial reference system for a candidate LEO spacecraft. Elaborate kalman filter formulation for a spacecraft is proposed for covariance analysis. The covariance analysis is performed to verify the capability of the proposed attitude determination system. The analysis results show that the attitude determination error and drift rate error are good enough to satisfy the mission of a candidate spacecraft.
This paper presents calibration and alignment algorithms for low-cost inertial sensors. The error models for gyro and accelerometer are presented with a study of their effects. A navigational Kalman Filter is derived based on those error models. Test results are presented, which shows the initial calibration and alignment scheme and the proposed filter configuration effectively reduce the drift of the sensors and provide improved accuracy for its practical use for navigation.

In this paper, a personal navigation system is developed using GPS and dead reckoning sensors. This personal navigation system can be used to track a person inside a building, on an urban street, and in the mountain area. GPS can provide accurate absolute position information, but it cant be used without receiving enough satellite signals. Although the inertial sensors such as gyro an accelerometer and be used without this diggiculty, the inertial sensors severely suffer from their drift errors and the magne-tometer can be easily distorted by surrounding electromagnetic field. GPS and DR sensors can be inte-grated together to overcome these problems. A new personal navigation system that can be carried wit person is developed. A pedometer. actually vertically mounted accelerometer, detects ones footstep and gyro detects heading angle. These DR sensors are integrated with GPS and the humans walking pattern provides additional navigation information for compensating the DR sensors. The field testes are performed to evaluated the proposed navigation algorithm.
KARI precision attitude determination system has been developed for high accurate geo-coding of KOMPSAT-2 image. Sensor data from two star trackers and a IRU are used as measurement and dynamic data. Sensor data from star tracker are composed of QUEST and unit vector filter. Filter algorithms consists of extended Kalman filter, unscented Kalman filter, and least square batch filter. The type of sensor data and filter algorithm can be chosen by user options. Estimated parameters are Euler angle from 12000 frame to optical bench frame, gyro drift rate bias, gyro scale factor, misalignment angle of star tracker coordinate frame with respect to optical bench frame, and misalignment angle of gyro coordinate frame with respect to optical bench frame. In particular, ground control point data can be applied for estimating misalignment angle of star tracker coordinate frame. Through the simulation, KPADS is able to satisfy the KOMPSAT-2 mission requirement in which geo-location accuracy of image is 80 m (CE90) without ground control point.
