Eruption Cycles and Volcanic Form of the Dokdo Volcano, Korea (독도 화산의 분출윤회와 화산형태)

  • The Dokdo volcano in the south-central part of the East Sea is classified into 8 rock units. The units and sequence suggest that the Dok Island forms a small stratovolcano constructed from at least 3 times eruption cycles above the sea level and proceeded with transformation of a few different eruption styles during each cycle. Reconstruction of the volcanic form, from the geologic structures and spatial lithofacies changes, suggests that the island is remnants of the southwestern caldera rim of the stratovolcano whose central part lies several hundred meters to the northeast. The subaqueous volcano shows abig guyot, which looks like a shield volcano, that represents gentle slope at 90-175 m deep and relatively steep one in 200∼2,000m, and 25∼30km wise base on sea floor. Therefore the total Dokdo volcano represents a multiple volcano that stratovolcano with small caldera overlies the big guyot.

  • Bacterial abundance and production in the water column over two seamounts (Horizon Guyot and magellan rise) in the central North Pacific were studied in March 1987. Bacterial abundance (0.9-2.3${\times}$10/SUP 8/ l/SUP -1/) in surface waters during the study period were in the lower limit of the values reported for oligotrophic areas. further, bacterial abundance in mesopelagic zone (mostly<5${\times}$ 10/SUP 7/ l/SUP -1/) was much lower than that reported from other tropical areas. Bacterial production 920-466 ng C l/SUP -1/ d/SUP -1/) in surface waters was also low compared to other oligotrophic oceanic environments. However, comparison of bacterial production with the earlier reported values of primary production from these regions suggested a significant role of bacteria in the utilization of organic matter in further studies on spatial distribution of bacterial production on both small and large scales in very oligotrophic aquatic environments are suggested to be necessary.

Petrography and Mineral Chemistry of Some Deep Sea Basaltic Rocks from the Western Caroline Ridge and Yap Trench-Arc System (서부 캐롤라인 해령과 얍 해구-열도계의 해저 현무암질암에 대한 암석 기재 및 광물화학)

  • This paper reports the results about the petrography and mineral chemistry of 13 representative dredged basaltic rocks from the western Caroline Ridge (WCR) and Yap Trench-Arc system, and provides the chemical and tectonic informations based on the compositions of clinopyroxene phenocrysts. Compositions of olivine phenocrysts in some analyzed samples are Fo$_{86-80}$. Plagioclase phenocrysts have variable compositions ranging from An$_{90}$ to An$_{55}$. The compositions of clinopyroxene phenocrysts vary according to geological environments; titansalite in atoll and guyot of WCR, diopside-augite in trough and bank of WCR, and endiopside in Yap Trench-Arc system. Application of the discrimination schemes proposed by Leterrier et al. (1982) suggests: (1) the samples from atoll-guyot belong to within plate alkali basalt, implying that western CR could be the continuation of eastern CR formed by hot spot magmatism, (2) the samples from the Yap Trench-Arc system with no present-day magmatism clearly indicate the occurrence of orogenic tholeiites presumably related to early island arc magmatisms in this area, however, (3) the samples from the bank and trough do not provide definitive informations, which might indicate the complexity of their origins.

Geophysical and Sedimentological Characteristics of Lomilik Seamount, West Pacific (서태평양 Lomilik 해저산 퇴적환경 특성)

  • Lomilik Seamount in the west Pacific was seismically surveyed and photographed to illuminate the bottom topography, the condition of manganese crust, and the characteristics of sedimentary environment. Lomilik Seamount has a NW-SE elongated bottom topography with steep slopes in the NESW direction part. Even though the steep slopes of the seamount are devoid of deposits, the summit area and gentle slope of the seamount are covered with thick deposits. The seismic data indicate that Lomilik Seamount is a flat-topped and step-faulted guyot of volcanic origin. Deep-sea camera photographs show that much of the seafloor is rippled in symmetrical and asymmetrical patterns. The traces of biological activity were distinct on gentle seafloor suggesting the low-energy bottom conditions. Some photographs also show outcrops encrusted with manganese crusts. Sedimentary environments in the Lomilik Seamount appear have been governed by regional morphology and strong bottom current.

  • The circulation of the sea water in relation to the submarine topography is discussed using the oceanographic, current measurement and echo-sounding data obtained by R/V Odaesan in the waters adjacent to Kamchatka and Kurile Islands. The continental shelf which is approximately seventy-five kilometers wide at the east of Kamchata Peninsula becomes narrower at the Kurile Islands, and is cut, at the sea floor approximately twenty miles east of Onekotan Island, by a narrow, shallow sea channel extending from the depression in the Onekotan Strait, forming an elevation similar to a guyot. The measured current speed of approximately one knot in the Oyashio Current region east of Kurile Island is faster than that (0.5-0.7 knot) deduced by the dynamic computation of ocean current.

The Morphological Change by Slope Erosional Processes in the Dokdo Seamount (독도해산의 사면침식으로 인한 지형변화)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze landform characteristics and geomorphic processes in Dokdo seamount. For geomorphic analysis, bathymetry data were collected by multi-beam echosounder and the seismic survey was also conducted. Through the detailed analysis of depth, slope, aspect and erosional landform, Dokdo Seamount is characterized by a flat or gently sloping top of $2^{\circ}$ or less and seamount slope with $14{\sim}40^{\circ}$ gradient. There are protrusion of landform around the Dokdo on top of the Dokdo seamount. It is inferred that the features are formed by collapsed debris deposits or remained bedrocks by differential erosion in the past. The massmovement topography including slump and slide is shown on seamount slope with $14{\sim}40^{\circ}$ gradient. In addition, gullies with various length are developed on the Dokdo seamount slope. Slope erosional processes occur more actively along the submarine gullies on the Dokdo seamount. It is inferred that the massmovement processes on the slope of Dokdo seamount are related to earthquake activities and evolution of submarine volcano. Consequently, slope of the Dokdo seamount has retreated by erosional processes of mass-movement and submarine gullies.

Geophysical and Geological Exploration of Cobalt-rich Ferromanganese Crusts on a Seamount in the Western Pacific (서태평양 해저산 고코발트 망간각 자원평가를 위한 광역 탐사 방안)

  • Co-rich ferromanganese crusts (Fe-Mn crusts) distributed on the seamounts in the western Pacific are potential economic resources for cobalt, nickel, platinum, and other rare metals in the future. Regulations for prospecting and exploration of Fe-Mn crusts in the Area, which enables the process to obtain an exclusive exploration right for blocks of the fixed size, were enacted recently by the International Seabed Authority, which led to public attention on its potential for commercial development. Evaluation and selection of a mining site can be established based on abundance and grade of Fe-Mn crusts in the site as well as topography that should be smooth enough for mining efficiency. Therefore, acquisition of shipboard echo-sounding and acoustic backscatter data are prerequisite to select potential mine sites in addition to visual and sampling operations. Acoustic backscatter data can be used to locate crust-covered areas in a regional scale with the understanding of acoustic properties of crust through its correlation with visual and sampling data. KIOST had collected the topographic and geologic data to assess the resources potential for Fe-Mn crusts in the west Pacific region from 1994 to 2001. However, they could not obtain acoustic backscatter data that is crucial for the selection of prospective mining sites. Therefore, additional exploration surveys are required to carry out side scan sonar mapping combined with seafloor observation and sampling to decide the blocks for application of an exclusive exploration right.
