  • The lightness of components required in automobile and machinery industries is requiring high strength of components. Therefore this requirement is accomplished as the process of shot-peening method that the compressive residual stress is made on the metal surface as one of various improvement methods. Special research is, therefore, needed about compressive residual stress on the metal surface in the process of shot-peening method. Therefore, in this paper the effect of compressive residual stress of spring steel(JISG SUP-9) by shot-peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in environmental condition(temperature) and mechanical condition(shot velocity, stress ratio) was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. By using the methods mentioned above, the following conclusions have been drawn. (1) The fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) of the shot-peened material was lower than that of the un-peened one. In high temperature range. fatigue crack growth rate decreased with increasing temperature range, while fatigue crack growth rate increased by decreasing temperature in low temperature. (2) Fatigue life shows more improvement in the shot-peened material than in the un-peened material. And compressive residual stress of surface on the shot-peen processed operate resistance force of fatigue crack propagation.

  • The structures and mechanical properties of undirectionally solidified Sn-Zn eutectic alloys have been examined over the growth range 7mm/h to 6,000mm/h. The structures of unidirectionally solidified Sn-Zn eutectic alloys were primarily broken-lamellar at growth rates below 760mm/h and became fibrous at higher growth rates above that. At a growth rate 3,084mm/h the structures were fibrouse only. There is no dendrites at any growth rates, but occasionally ribbon-like morphologies were seen. The under cooling increased parabolically with growth rate increase. The hardness of specimes increased with growth rates increase but heat-treated specimen decreased after growth rates 760mm/h and became constant value. The effect of heat-treatment was good at lower growth rate. At room temperature tensile strength increased with growth rates up to R=990mm/h and then tensile strength became near-constant value. The effect of heat-treatment was well at lower growth rate.

  • The growth of short cracks can be well described in terms of the effective stress intensity factor range, which is calculated on the base of crack closure. The relation between the crack opening SIF and crack length is determined from the experimental results. The crack opening SIF of short cracks, Kop, can be predicted from the crack opening SIF at threshold of long crack, Kop.L. The growth rate of short cracks at notch root can be predicted from the crack opening SIF of short cracks, Kop, and the growth equation of long cracks in region II.

  • In-plane tension fatigue tests(R=0.1) were carried out to investigate the initiation and growth behaviors of very small surface fatigue cracks on smooth unnotched surfaces of type 304 stainless steel at room temperature. The present paper deals with the unification of two approaches to the analysis of fatigue: the one approach is based on fracture mechanics concept and the other on low-cycle fatigue concept. The results are;(1)Maximum crack length, 2 $a_{max}$, initiated at a very small surface scratch not exceeding 20 .mu.m which can exist on the surface after buffing. And the density of small surface crack is remarkably low compared to that of mild steel. (2) The growth rate, d(2a)/dN, of very small fatigue cracks can be represented by one straight line as a function of either stress intensity factor range, .DELTA. $K_{I}$ or cyclic total strain intensity factor range, .DELTA. $K_{\epsilon}$$_{I}$/, for various values of the nominal stress range.e.e.e.e.

  • This paper is concerned with a particular fracture mechanics parameter ${\Delta}K_{th}$, known as the 'threshold stress intensity range', or 'fatigue threshold'. This threshold ${\Delta}K_{th}$ constitutes, as it were, a hinge between the notion of crack initiation and the notion of crack growth. It has often been thought that, like the endurance limit, it could be an intrinsic criterion of the material. The study was conducted on a SA-508 pressure vessel steel used in the nuclear power industry. This material exhibits a typical threshold effect in the range of the crack growth rates which were determined; that is, below approximately $da/dN=10^{-6}mm/cycle$, the slope of the da./dN versus ${\Delta}K$ curve is almost vertical. The value of ${\Delta}K_{th}$ was determined at a growth rate of $10^{-7}$ mm/cycle according to the ASTM Standard for threshold testing. The fatigue threshold values are in the range 21 $kg/mm^{3/2}$ to 12 $kg/mm^{3/2}$ depending on the stress ratio effect.

  • The infrastructures such as offshore, bridges, power plant, oil and gas piping and aircraft operate in a harsh environment during their service life. Structural integrity of engineering components used in these industries is paramount for the reliability and economics of operation. Two regression models based on the concept of Gaussian process regression (GPR) and Minimax probability machine regression (MPMR) were developed to predict stress intensity factor range (𝚫K). Both GPR and MPMR are in the frame work of probability distribution. Models were developed by using the fatigue crack growth data in MATLAB by appropriately modifying the tools. Fatigue crack growth experiments were carried out on Eccentrically-loaded Single Edge notch Tension (ESE(T)) specimens made of API 5L X65 Grade steel in inert and corrosive environments (2.0% and 3.5% NaCl). The experiments were carried out under constant amplitude cyclic loading with a stress ratio of 0.1 and 5.0 Hz frequency (inert environment), 0.5 Hz frequency (corrosive environment). Crack growth rate (da/dN) and stress intensity factor range (𝚫K) values were evaluated at incremental values of loading cycle and crack length. About 70 to 75% of the data has been used for training and the remaining for validation of the models. It is observed that the predicted SIF range is in good agreement with the corresponding experimental observations. Further, the performance of the models was assessed with several statistical parameters, namely, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Coefficient of Efficiency (E), Root Mean Square Error to Observation's Standard Deviation Ratio (RSR), Normalized Mean Bias Error (NMBE), Performance Index (ρ) and Variance Account Factor (VAF).

  • BACKGROUND: The 'Gamhong' cultivar, middle season apple with big fruit size and high soluble solid content, has been bred in Korea. However, it was hard to cultivate the cultivar in Korea by serious bitter pit. The relationships between shoot growth, fruit size, and bitter pit may be affected by crop load. This study was conducted for 2 years (7~8 years after planting) to investigate vegetative growth, fruit quality, bitter pit incidence, return bloom, and gross income for optimum crop load of 'Gamhong'/M.9 adult apple tree. METHODS AND RESULTS: The crop load was assigned to 4 different object ranges as follow: 45~64, 65~84, 85~104, and 105~124 fruits per tree. The vegetative growth, average fruit weight, percentage of fruits heavier than 375 g, soluble solid content, and return bloom increased significantly at the crop load range of 45~64 fruits. However, the lowest total gross income per tree may have been caused by the highest bitter pit incidence and the lowest yield per tree in any other crop load range. The total gross income and yield per tree increased significantly at the crop load range of 105~124 fruits and return bloom dropped to 40%, and hence it was possible to occur biennial bearing. It was 85~104 fruits that biennial bearing did not occur and total gross income was as high as the crop load range of 105~124 fruits. Also, the yield of high grade fruits per tree, with fruit weight of 400~499 g and none bitter pit on fruit surface, was highest at the crop load range of 85~104 fruits, compared to other crop load range. CONCLUSION: In considering fruit size, bitter pit incidence, return bloom, and gross income, the optimum crop load range of 'Gamhong'/M.9 adult apple tree in high density orchard was 85~104 fruits per tree.

  • Using the "Statistical Yearbooks of Korean forestry", we assessed the uptake of nitrogen and base cations by Korean forest. Combined amount of base cations uptake by forest tress during its growth and that of at the time of harvest reached to 1,034 eq/ha/yr. The base cations uptake in the range of 900 ~ 1,100 eq/ha/yr occupied approximately 48.6% out of total. Coniferous forest in the range of 170 ~ 200 eq/ha/yr was 59.9%, deciduous forest in the range of 430 ~ 530 eq/ha/yr was 42.6%, and mixed forest in the range of 270 ~ 370 eq/ha/yr was 35.7% out of total. Deciduous forest recorded higher uptake rate of nitrogen and base cation than coniferous forest in Korea. Combined amounts of nitrogen uptake by forest tress during growth and that at the time of forest, was 1,108 eq/ha/yr and nitrogen uptake was in the range of 1,000 ~ 1,200 eq/ha/yr, Within Korea, forest with nitrogen uptake in the range of 1,000 ~ 1,200 eq/ha/yr account for 45.7% of the entire country. Locations in the range of 320 ~ 390 eq/ha/yr occupied 43.9% of all coniferous forest while deciduous forest in the range of 470 ~ 570 eq/ha/yr was 40.4% of total deciduous forest. As for mixed forest in the range of 270 ~ 370 eq/ha/yr, it occupied 35.9% of all mixed forest of Korea.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of residual stresses on the $\Delta$K$\sub$th/ and fatigue crack growth behavior of butt weldments. For this purpose, transverse butt sutmerged arc welding was performed on SM50A steel plate and CT(compact tension) specimens which loading direction is perpendicular to weld bead were selected. Welding residual stresses distribution on the specimen was determined by hole drilling method. The case of crack located parallel to weld bead, the states of as weld and PWHT, $\Delta$K$\sub$th/ of specimens(HAZ, weld zone) was higher than that of the base metal probably because of the compressive residual stresses of crack tip. In low $\Delta$K region, it is estimated that the effects of residual stresses for da/dN are great. In region II, the da/dN of weldments in as weld state was lower than that of the base metal. Though da/dN of Weldments in PWHT state was similar to that of the base metal. The constant of power law, m in two states consisted with the base metal. Therefore , it is estimated that the value of m is not affected by residual stresses. Fatigue crack growth behavior of weldments consisted with the base metal considering the effective stress intensity factor range($\Delta$K$\sub$eff/) included the effect of initial residual stress(Kres). Thus, we can predict the fatigue crack growth behavior of weldment by knowing the distribution of initial residual stress at the crack tip.
