  • This study was conducted to reveal the effects of local climatic conditions on reproductive growth in a mature stand of Korean white pine based on climatic estimates. For this, the reproductive growth such as production and characteristics of cone and seed were first measured and summarized for seven years from 1974 to 1980. The local climatic conditions in the study site were also estimated by both a topoclimatological method and a spatial statistical technique. The local climatic conditions were then correlated with and regressed on the growth factors to reveal the relationships between the climatic estimates and the reproductive growth. Average number of conelet formation per tree showed highly negative correlation with some climatic variables related to minimum temperature in the year of flower bud differentiation. Especially, the most significant negative correlation were found between average of the minimum temperature for June and July of flower bud differentiation year and the number of conelet formation. There was no significant correlation between the number of cone production and climatic variables. However, total precipitation from December of the flowering year to February of the cone production year showed the most high correlation (r=0.6036) with the number of cone production. It was found that significant climatic variables affecting the amount of cone drop and cone drop percentage were the sum of cloudy days from June of the flowering year to August of the cone production year. Positive correlation was significantly recognized between the average weight of empty seed per cone and total precipitation from December of the flowering year to February of the cone production year. For the percentage of empty seed, five climatic variables among 19 variables were significantly correlated at 10% level. The average weight of a cone showed negative correlation with total precipitation from June of the flowering year to August of the cone production year. It was also found that average weight of a seed had highly negative correlation with total precipitation from December of the flowering year to February of the cone production year. The average weight of cone coat was negatively correlated with two climatic variables derived from clear days, which are sum of clear days from November of the flowering year to March of the cone production year and sum of clear days from December of the flowering year to February of the cone production year. On the other hand, it showed positive correlation with mean temperature of May in the flowering year. The exactly same results were obtained in correlation analysis for the percentage of cone coat.

  • The present investigation dealt with observation and experiments concerning the growth and differentiation of hop plant, using the varieties of Cascade(C), Shinshuwase(Sh), and Hallertau(H). The results were as follows: (1) Life cycle of hop plants. The annual growth period of hop plant was devided chiefly into 3 phases, dormant, vegetative and reproductive. (2) Growth of main stem. The hop vine begun to grow in the middle of May and grow vigorousely in the middle and latter of June, then gradually decline or stops at the middle of July and the early of August. (3) Growth of lateral vines. By the statistical analysis, it is judged that the varieties of H and Sh were more grown than that of C. H and Sh were not significant, but H and Sh from C were significant in 5% level. (4) Fresh weight and water content of hop cone. Hop cone in fresh weight of C variety was higher than those of other two varieties and water content of hop cone was decreased with time elapse in three races together. (5) Growing point. Histological view of hop varities in each was different. C showed form of sweet potato, H showed form of round, and Sh showed form of ellipse. (6) Shape of the leaf. C and H were 3 lobes, but Sh is 3∼5 lobes. Generally, the color is dark green. (7) Hop cones. Hop cones are as follows.

  • Background and Objective: We aimed to investigate long-term clinical and echocardiographic outcomes, including tricuspid valve durability, annular growth, and left ventricular reverse remodeling, after modified cone reconstruction in patients with Ebstein's anomaly. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of all pediatric patients who underwent modified cone reconstruction for Ebstein's anomaly at a single tertiary center between January 2005 and June 2021. Results: A total of 14 pediatric patients underwent modified cone reconstruction for Ebstein's anomaly; the median age was 5.8 years (range, 0.01-16.6). There were three patients (21.4%) with Carpentier type B, ten patients with Carpentier type C (71.4%), and one patient with Carpentier type D (7.1%). There was no early or late mortality, arrhythmia, or readmission for heart failure at a 10-year follow-up. There were no cases of more than mild tricuspid stenosis or more than moderate tricuspid regurgitation during the study period, except for one patient with severe tricuspid regurgitation who underwent reoperation. The z value for tricuspid valve annular size significantly decreased immediately after the operation (2.46 vs. -1.15, p<0.001). However, from 1 year to 7 years after surgery, the z values were maintained between -1 and +1. Left ventricular end-systolic volume, end-diastolic volume, and stroke volume increased after surgery and remained elevated until seven years postoperatively. Conclusions: Ebstein's anomaly in children can be repaired by modified cone reconstruction with low mortality and morbidity, good tricuspid valve durability, and annular growth relative to somatic growth.

  • This study investigated the effect of diet supplementation with pine cone extracts (pine cone ethanol extract: PCEE; pine cone ethanol-hexane extract: PCEHE) on growth performance, digestive organ characteristics and intestinal microbiota of semi-broiler. Twenty two-weeks-old semi-broilers were divided into four dietary groups (n=5/group; control(-): no antibiotics and pine cone extracts; control(+): 2% antibiotics [20 g/kg basal diet]; PCEE: 2% PCEE [20 g/kg basal diet]; PCEHE: 2% PCEHE [20 g/kg basal diet]). Chicks were reared and their diets were supplemented accordingly for 16 days. Final weight, weight gain and feed intake were lowest (P<0.05) in semi-broilers whose diet was supplemented with pine cone extracts, but both PCEE and PCEHE groups showed lower (P<0.05) feed conversion ratios compared to the control(-) group. Gizzard and small intestinal weight were also lower (P<0.05) in both PCEE and PCEHE groups than in the control(-) group. Intestinal length and villus height were similar for all treatments. Furthermore, cecal microbiota was not improved by PCEE and PCEHE supplementation. These findings suggest that diet supplementation with pine cone extracts improves the feed conversion ratio and affects the digestive organ weight of semi-broilers.

  • The cone calorimeter method which is currently used to measure the heat release rate has a fixed rate of radiation. However, in the real fire, when flame combustible material burns, it releases the identical heat flux. We measured the changes of temperature of a fire using FDS in order to analyze flexible heat flux of combustion characteristics. In this study, the rate of radiation of cone calorimeter was adopted by using FDS. Follow those results, it produce between the rate of radiation in the growth period and decline period have a significant impact on heat release rate of PMMA.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate effects of dietary pine cone meal on growth performance, serum cholesterol, carcass quality and fatty acid composition and cholesterol content of meat in broiler chickens. Three treatments were assigned to 480(2 days) Arbor Acre broiler chicks with eight replications, allocating 20 broiler chicks in each replication. Dietary treatments included 1) CS(1% cottonwood sawdust), 2) PCM0.5(0.5% cottonwood sawdust + 0.5% pine cone meal) and 3) PCM1.0(1% pine cone meal). During the overall period the difference of growth performance was not significant among treatments (P>0.05). Also, cholesterol profile(total, HDL, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride) in serum and carcass characteristic were not affected by treatments(P>0.05). TBARS of leg and breast meat was significantly decreased (P<0.05) in PCM1.0 treatment compared to CS treatment. In fatty acid contents of leg meat, C20:0 was significantly higher in PCM0.5 treatment than PCM1.0 treatment(P<0.05). Also, C18:3n3 was significantly lower in PCM1.0 treatment than other treatments(P<0.05). Cholesterol contents of leg, breast meat and abdomen fat were not significant among treatment(P>0.05). In conclusion, results of the experiment were affected by dietary supplementation of pine cone meal on TBARS of leg and breast meat.

  • In the vine training methods, main vine training yield was 36% higher than the non-training. Main vine training date was studied for increasing cone yield in hops. Training was done four different dates from May 14 to May 29 including non-training as a check. Earlier training increased cone yield from 12 to 43% due to more beared branches per plant, longer branch length caused by accelerating the branch growth, and an increased of number of cone per beared branch and total cone number.

  • This paper presents an atomization model for sprays under flash boiling conditions. The atomization is represented by the secondary breakup of a bubble/droplet system, and the breakup is considered as the results of two competing mechanisms, aerodynamic force and bubble growth. The model was applied to predict the atomization of a hollow-cone spray from pintle injector under flash boiling conditions. In the regimes this study considered, sprays are atomized by bubble growth, which produces smaller SMD#s than aerodynamic forces alone. With decreasing ambient pressures, the spray thickness, fuel vaporization rate and vapor radial penetration increases, and the drop size decreases. With increasing the fuel and ambient temperatures to some extent, the effect of flash boiling and air entrainment completely change the spray pattern.

  • Enclosure experiments to reduce the growth of Cyanophyceae were carried out using plants in Kyongan stream. Wet plants put into the enclosure at a rate of 2.5 g wet wt/l and at that time, the average concentration of chlorophyll a was ranged from 30 to $50\;{\mu}g/l$. The dominant species was Microcystis aeruginosa. Ginkgo, big cone pine and pine needles significantly inhibited the growth of Microcystis from the early days to the stages of log-Phase. Waterchestnut was the most inhibitory to the growth of Microcystis. Pine needles inhibited in 85% of the algal growth: ginkgo in 80%; big cone pine in 75%; waterchestnut in 78%; wildrice in 59%; and iris in 30%. At the treatment with 0.25 g dried plants/l, algae was declined at a rate of 90% by waterchestnut: 53% by pine needles. Phenolic compounds were purifled from decomposing big cone pine and waterchestnut.

  • Research to discuss the fire performance of materials requires tools for measuring their burning characteristics and validated fire growth models to predict fire behavior of the materials under specific tire scenarios using the measured properties as input for the models. In this study, burning characteristics such as time to ignition, weight loss rate, flame spread, heat release rate, total heat evolved, and effective heat of combustion for four types of wood-based materials were evaluated using the cone calorimeter and inclined panel tests. Time to ignition was affected by not only surface condition and specific gravity of the tested materials but also the type and magnitude of heat source. Results of weight loss rate, measured by inclined panel tests, indicated that heat transfer from the contacted flame used as the heat source into the inner part of the specimen was inversely proportional to specific gravity of material. Flame spread was closely related with ignition time at the near part of burning zone. Under constant and severe external heat flux, there was little difference in weight loss rate and total heat evolved between four types of wood-based panels. More applied heat flux caused by longer ignition time induced a higher first peak value of heat release rate. Burning characteristics data measured in this study can be used effectively as input for fire growth models to predict the fire behavior of materials under specific fire scenarios.
