  • Illegal slash-and-bum fields and slash-and-bum farmers in Korea had increased in spite of Japanese Joseon Government's strong regulations and clearance measures, and land reform after the 1945 Liberation of Korea until 1970s. This study is to inquire into the necessary and sufficient conditions to disappear entirely the matters from 1974 to 1979 that illegal slash-and-bum fields and slash-and-burn farmers continued long in existence until the early 1970s. The findings are as follows; Firstly, the population pressure to agricultural lands that main factor of generation of illegal slash-and-bum fields had decreased rapidly because the rural populations and less income farmers have decreased after 1967. Especially, the decrease of the rural populations had never seen to the 1970s. It is recognised that the social condition for the success in 1970s. Secondly, the continuous economic growth from the early 1960s enabled the Korean government to solve the matter through the sufficient financial investment from the Government. For example, the gross national product (GNP) and the government budget in 1974 increased around 25 times after 1960. It is recognised that the economic condition for the success in 1970s. Finally, it was enabled to remove the concealment from the slash-and-bum farmers and to monitor illegal re-cultivation thoroughly because the development of forest inventory technique using an aerial photograph and the expansion of road facilities. It is recognised that the technical condition for the success in the 1970s.

  • The soil microbiome plays important roles in material cycling and plant growth in forest ecosystem. Although a lot of researches on forest soil fungi in Korea have been performed, the studies on forest soil bacterial communities have been limited. In this study, we conducted next generation sequencing (NGS) targeting 16S rRNA gene to investigate the soil bacterial communities from natural red pine (Pinus densiflora) forest in Mt. Janggunbong, Bonghwa-gun, Gyeongbuk, Korea. Our results showed that the entire bacterial communities in the study sites include the phyla Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Planctomycetes, which have been typically observed in forest soils. The composition ratio of Proteobacteria was the highest in the soil bacteria community. The results reflect that Proteobacteria is copiotroph, which generally favors relatively nutrient-rich conditions with abundant organic matter. Some rhizobia species such as Burkholderia, Bradyrhizobium, Rhizobium, which are known to contribute to soil nitrogen-fixation, exist in the study sites. As a result of correlation analysis between soil physicochemical characteristics and bacteria communities, the soil pH was significantly correlated with the soil bacteria compositions.

  • In order to elucidate the physiological function of circulating IGF-I on muscle protein synthesis in the chicken under malnutritional conditions, we administrated recombinant chicken IGF-I using a osmotic mini pump to fasted young chickens and measured the rate of muscle protein synthesis and plasma metabolite. The pumps delivered IGF-I at the rate of $22{\mu}g/d\{300{\mu}g{\cdot}(kg\;body\;weight{\cdot}d)^{-1}\}$. Fractional rate of protein synthesis in the muscle was measured using a large dose injection of L-[$2,6-^3H$]phenylalanine. Constant infusion of chicken IGF-I did not affect plasma glucose level. Significant interaction between dietary treatment and IGF-I infusion was observed in plasma NEFA and total cholesterol concentrations. When chicks were fasted, IGF-I infusion decreased plasma NEFA and total cholesterol concentrations. On the other hand, IGF-I administration did not affect plasma levels of both metabolites. Fasting reduced plasma triglyceride concentration significantly. IGF-I infusion also decreased the level of plasma triglyceride. Plasma IGF-I concentration of young chickens was halved by fasting for 1 d. IGF-I infusion using an osmotic minipump for 1 d increased plasma IGF-I concentration in fasted chicks to the level of fed chicks. Fasting decreased body weight and the loss of body weight was significantly ameliorated by IGF-I infusion. There was a significant interaction between dietary treatment and IGF-I infusion in the fractional rate of breast muscle protein synthesis. There was no effect of IGF-I infusion on muscle protein synthesis in fed chicks. Muscle protein synthesis reduced by fasting was ameliorated by IGF-I infusion, but did not reach to the level of fed control. Muscle weight of fasted chicks infused with IGF-I was similar to fasted birds without IGF-I infusion, which suggests that muscle protein degradation would be increased by IGF-I infusion as well as protein synthesis in fasted chicks.

  • A rapid processing method for fish sauce of high quality stability and favorable flavor was investigated using mackerel waste as starting material. The chopped waste was homogenized with water and hydrolyzed by commercial proteolytic enzymes such as Complex enzyme-2000($2.18\cdot10^4$ U/g solid, Pacific Chem. Co.) and Alcalase ($1.94\cdot10^4$ U/g solid, Novo) in a cylindrical vessel with 4 baffles and 6-bladed turbine impeller. Optimal pH and temperature for the hydrolysis with Complex enzyme-2000 were 8.0 and $50^{\circ}C$, and those with Alcalase were 9.0 and $55^{\circ}C$. In both cases, the reasonabe amount of added water and enzyme concentration based on the waste weight were $40\%,\;3\%$ and hydrolyzing time was 100 min. Thermal treatment of the hydrolysate with $6\%$ of invert sugar for 2 hours at $90^{\circ}C$ was adequated to inactivation of the enzymes and pasteurization of the hydrolysate. Flavor, taste and color of the hydrolysate were improved during the thermal treatment in which the browning reaction products might participate and result in antioxidative and bactericidal effects. Combined use of $0.005\%$ of Caryophylli flos with $6\%$ of invert sugar was also effective for the improvement of taste. Yield of the fish sauce based on the total nitrogen of the raw waste was $93.7\~94.9\%$, and $87.6\~87.9\%$ of the total nitrogen in the fish sauce was in the from of amino nitrogen. The pH, salinity and histamine content of the fish sauce prepared with $15\%$ of table salt were $6.1\~6.2$, $14.0\~14.5\%$ and less than $10mg\%$, respectively. The fish sauce was stable on bacterial growth during the storage of 60 days at $26\pm3^{\circ}C$ and the quality was also maintained.

  • The study was performed to select a adaptable tree species under stressed field conditions where there are a industrial plants operating with a number of smoke stacks emitting pollutants, such as hydrogen fluoride and sulfur dioxide. As a result of the study, a tree species selected are due to construct a forest belt in a zones near industrial plants to reduce the concentrations of air pollutants. The concentrations of atmospheric hydrogen fluoride and sulfur dioxide were very higher at experimental sites near industrial plants (air-pollution sites) than at control site. The leaves of 7 tree species grown at air pollution sites contained more sulfur and, specially, fluorine than at those control site. Among the tested tree species, Ligustrum japonicum Thunb. and Euonymus japonica Thunb. grown at air pollution sites did not at all break out a foliar injury but appeared to be healthy, as well as those grown at control site. Acer pseudo-sieboldianum Kom., Pinus virginiana Mill., Larix leptolepis Gordon., Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc., Pinus strobus L., Picea abies Karst and Ligustrum obtusifolium Sieb. et Zucc., however, showed a severe fluoride-type foliar injury such as necrosis on tip or margin of leaves, etc. Fluorine found in leaves was proved to be correlated to sulfur found in leaves whereas index of foliar injury hadn't a good correlation to pollutants found in leaves. It appears that Euonymus japonica Thunb., Ligustrum japonica Thunb., Platanus acerifolia Willd, Chamaecyparis pisifera Endl., Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee and Sophora japonica L. grown at both experimental sites had a high value of percent survival whereas Pinus virginiana Mill., Pinus koraiensis Sib. et Zucc., Koelreuteria paniculata Laxm. and Alnus hirsuta Rupr. had an extremely low value of that. In comparison with control site, the percent tree height increments in Chamaecyparis pisifera Endl., Ligustrum japonicum Thunb., Quercus acutissima Carruth., Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee, Pinus thunbergii Parl and Euonymus japonica Thunb. and the percent upmost root diameters in Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee, Chamaecyparis pisifera Endl., Euonymus japonica Thunb., Ligustrum japonicum Thunb., Betula platyphylla var. japonica Hara and Pinus thunbergii Parl. cultivated at air polluted sites showed very high value above 90%, respectively. A significant negative correlation (r=-0.662) was recognized between the index of foliage injury and the percent collective character, which was the mean of tree characters such as percent survival, percent tree height increment and percent upmost root diameter increment which compared to those at air polluted site with those at control site. Based on the percent collective character Ligustrum japonicum Thunb., Euonymus japonica Thunb., Chamaecyparis pisifera Endl., Populus tomentiglandlosa T. Lee, Betula platyphyla var. japonica Hara and Platanus occidentalis L. have large value about 90%, respectively. Therefore, the results indicate that this tree species are adaptable species in air polluted regions. For better understanding of the adaptable tree species, furthur studies concerning the effects of various air pollutants on the tree growth are required.

  • In general cooked rice would be used as a major raw material for making Takju. In this case quality, taste and storage time of Takju were not fully satisfied. Fermentation conditions for Takiu mash were examined by using the germed brown rice in this study. In case of the germed brown rice on 2nd stage mash, alcohol was slowly generated in comparison with the cooked rice. Reducing sugar was slowly produced and the amount of reducing sugar was low. The sugar content was created at a uniform rate. The pH was shown to be higher in mash of the germed brown rice than that of the cooked rice. Acidity change showed a similar inclination to pH change. The degree of yeast growth on the mash of the germed brown rice was revealed to be slightly lower than that of the cooked rice. Temperature of mash was kept to be constant after 3 days from fermentation. Fusel oil produced from the mash of the germed brown rice was less gernerated in comparison with the cooked rice. Amount of amino acid in case of the germed brown rice was indicated to be higher. Takju made with the germed brown rice was shown to be 1.3 times in overall taste, 1.5 times in refreshing as compared with Takju made with the cooked rice. However there are no differences between them in flavor and color of Takju. In overall acceptance Takju made with the germed brown rice was shown to be 1.3 times as compared with Takju made with the cooked rice. In conclusion the germed brown rice was expected to be able to be better in Takju quality.

  • In this paper, as an attempt to improve the preparation conditions of $YBa_2Cu_3Ox$ superconducting bulk samples, the properties of $YBa_2Cu_3Ox$ superconductor depending on the particle size of YBCO powder and $BaPbO_3$ as an additive have been investigated, and a study on the effects of additive to the density, grain alignment, and porosity of samples that affect the critical current of superconductor has been performed. In order to prepare superconductor, $YBa_2Cu_3Ox$ powder synthesized by sol-gel method, showing a size distribution of 0.2~1 ${\mu}m$ was used. The $BaPbO_3$ added to promote grain growth and to decrease porosities and weak links between grain boundaries of $YBa_2Cu_3Ox$ superconductors. In the samples prepared by sol-gel synthesized powder with 10, 20, and 30 wt% conductive $BaPbO_3$ additives, the sample with 20 wt% $BaPbO_3$ obtained the highest critical current of 4.74 A, showing 20 wt% higher critical current than that with solid state synthesized powder.
