  • SiC nanorods have been grown on Si (100) substrate directly. Tetramethylsilane and Ni were used for SiC nanorod growth. After 3minute, SiC nanorod had grown by CVD. Growth regions ware divided by two regions with diameter. The First region consisted of thin SiC nanorods having below 10 nm diameter, but second region's diameter was 10∼50 nm. This appearance shows by reduction of growth rate. The effect of temperature and growth time was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Growth temperature and time affected nanorod's diameter and morphology. With increasing growth time, nanorod's diameter increased because of the deactivation effect. But growth temperatures affected little. By TEM characterization, grown SiC nanorods consisted of the polycrystalline grain.

  • This study aimed at isolating lactic acid bacteria with anti-MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) bacteriocin activity from fermented shrimp. We selected three strains, named Weissella sp. S1, S2, and S3, using analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences. All strains showed appropriate growth in an MRS medium containing 5% (w/v) NaCl and showed antibacterial activities against Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and MRSA. The strains exhibited similar growth rates at 0-5% NaCl, with approximate reduction in growth rate observed at 9% NaCl. Weissella sp. S1, S2, and S3 exhibited maximum growth rates at pH 7, 9, and 8, respectively. The crude bacteriocin was prepared from Weissella sp. S3 and subjected to characterization. The remaining activities after 30 min of exposure at each temperature were 100%, beyond 75%, and 49% at 4℃ and 37℃, 50℃ and 70℃, and 100℃, respectively. The remaining activities after 24 h of exposure at each pH were 100%, 75%, and 49% at pH 3 and 5, 7 and 9, and 10, respectively. Use of 50% (v/v) ethanol or isopropanol treatment did not diminish the antibacterial activity of the bacteriocin, while the 50% (v/v) hexane treatment reduced the activity by 51%. The molecular weight of the bacteriocin was nearly 6 kDa that was quantified using tricine-SDS-PAGE. Our findings suggest that Weissella sp. S3 may be considered a probiotic and useful source of antimicrobial substances in the development of bio-preservatives for food or in MRSA treatment.

  • The $Bi_2Sr_2Ca_{n-1}Cu_nOy$(BSCCO) phase is well known to be a superconductor having a strong anisotropic behavior. It can be seen that it is difficult to control the growth direction. In this study, we try to grow a Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O phase crystal by the crystal pulling method with a seed crystal and crucibel rotation. Relatively large crystals of the order of $5{\times}5{\times}5{\textrm}{mm}^3$ dimensions can be obtained. We also discuss the possible crystallization field of the $BiO_{1.5}$-(Sr, Ca)O-CuO ternary phase diagram, and present some results of the characterization and magnetic measurements on the grown crystal.

  • In the screening of phenol-degrading bacteria, a strain showing good growth in media containing phenol was isolated by using enrichment culture from various sample and identified as genus Klebsiella pneumoniae. The optimal temperature and pH for cell growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae was $35^{\circ}C$ and 8.0, respectively. When phenol was added to the minimal media as a sole source of carbon and energy, the concentration of maximum and optimum for cell growth was 1,200ppm and 1,000ppm, respectively. It was observed that Klebsiella pneumoniae was able to degrade 98% of phenol (1,000ppm) after 40hr in culture. The isolated could utilize various kinds of aromatic compounds and showed good growth in presence of phenol, m-cresol and 3-methyl catechol.

  • The characterization and sintering behavior of ZnO powders prepared by precipitation method were investigated. ZnO powders were synthesized using the aqueous solutions of ZnCl2 and NH4OH as a precipitation agent, which were crystallized in the shape of plate-like. The grain growth of ZnO(0.68${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 1.3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 3.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) has been studied for temepratures from 100$0^{\circ}C$ to 130$0^{\circ}C$, and the rate of densification was inversely proportional to the ZnO particle size. Densification proceeded slowly by diffusion mechanisms above at 100$0^{\circ}C$. In this work, the grain growth kinetic exponent(n) was 3. The temperature dependence of ZnO grain growth was plotted, and the activation energy of grain growth was 75~85Kcal/mol.

  • Erbium(Er) doped LiNbO3(Er:LiNbO3) single crystal gibers were grown free of cracks along the c-axis by micro-pulling down method. the Er3+ concentration was distributed homogeneously along the growth axis. The samples for optical characterization were cut from as-grown single crystal fibers and polished. When the 980 nm light was incident on the sample, upconversion phenomena were observed at the green range of wavelength 510~570 nm. In addition, the intensity of upconversion was remarkably increased by increasing the concentration of Er2O3 dopant in as-grown Er:LiNbO3 crystals.

  • A number of developments have occurred over recent years that are being used commercially or have the potential to increase the milk yield and consequently the efficiency of dairy cows. Bovine growth hormone is the most widely known of several attempts that have been made to alter the metabolic endocrinology of dairy cows to increase the rate of milk secretion. The factors affecting the milk yield response to growth hormone, growth hormone-releasing factor, thyroxine and placental lactogen as well as to the immuno-neutralization of somatostatin are briefly considered. Secondly, the recent greater understanding of the mechanism by which the milk yield is increased following more frequent milking, which has resulted from the identification and characterization of the feedback inhibitor of lactation (FIL) protein, is reviewed. The identification of this protein provides new avenues of research which may lead to a reduction in the rate of decline in milk yield with advancing lactation or to undiminished milk yields despite a reduction in frequency with which the animals are milked.

  • We isolated and characterized an antifungal peptide from the seeds of Phytolacca americana. Growth inhibition assay with Botrytis cinerea was used to screen inhibitory proteins from 60 different plant species. A 4 kDa antifungal peptide (Pa-AFP) inhibitory to hyphal growth of B. cinerea was found in the seeds of P. americana. The peptide Pa-AFP was purified to homogeneity by chromatographies of Sephadex G-50, DEAE-Sepharose, Sephacryl S-300, and C18 reverse-phase HPLC. Western blot analysis showed that a polyclonal antibody raised against the purified peptide cross-reacted with a 4 kDa protein in seeds but not in root and leaf tissues of P. americana. Pa-AFP inhibited the hyphal growth of Botrytis cinerea, Rihzoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporum, and Magnaporthe grisea. Pa-AFP exhibited growth inhibition of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain BWG7a, which was sensitive to osmotin.

  • Deposition of parylene (PA) films has been explored at substrate temperatures below 2$0^{\circ}C$ and pressures below 4 torr. The film thickness was measured using AFM and the film thickness measured was 3,500-12,000$\AA$ and the growth rate was 20-70$\AA$/min. T도 dielectric constant of the deposited PA films was found to be 2.66 and the dielectric strength was in excess of 2$\times$105V/cm. The growth rate became a maximum at a precursor decomposition temperature of $600^{\circ}C$. It was found that the growth rate decreased with increasing substrate temperature, whereas it increased with increasing pressure. At a precursor decomposition temperature of 75$0^{\circ}C$ or at a deposition pressure above 1 Torr the film surface became rough due to particle formation in the gas phase. The condensation of a p-xylylene monomer on the substrate surface turned out to be a rate-limiting step in the growth of the PA films.
