This study analyzed the growth characteristics of multi-layer planted trees through their growth analysis and attempted to present a management strategy. The subject of research is the Citizen's Forest Area of Seoul Forest Park located in Seoul City. Field surveys were conducted three times over eight years from 2005 when the Seoul Forest Park was created through 2013. Labels were attached to all trees in the target area, and their species, height and DBH were investigated. To identify the growth differences by trees in each area, a detailed tree location map was drawn up for use in the analysis. To check soil health, soil organic matter, soil pH and soil microbial activities were analyzed. It turned out that the growth of the multi-layer planted trees in the target area of research was higher than that of the trees in existing urban parks, and that it was similar to that of trees in natural forests. Through a field survey in the area with a remarkably low growth, high-density planting problem, soil was found to have excess-moisture and there was the problem of Pueraria lobata covering. As a result of the analysis of the soil, it was found that its organic content in the soil was lower; soil pH was higher; and microbial activities in the soil were lower when compared to that of natural forests.
The growth-inhibiting activities of persimmon roots-derived materials against intestinal bacteria were evaluated and compared with that of 1,4-naphthoquinone as a positive control. The active constituent isolated from persimmon roots was characterized as 5-hydroxy-2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone using various spectroscopic analyses. Treatment with 1,4-naphthoquinone at a dose of 1.0 mg/disc strongly inhibited the growth of 6 intestinal bacteria. Furthermore, when the structure-activity relationships of 1,4-naphthoquinone's derivatives were evaluated, 5-hydroxy-2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone and 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone were found to strongly inhibit the growth of Clostridium difficile, Clostridium perfringens, and Escherichia coli without adversely affecting the growth of Bifidobacterium adolescentis, Bifidobacterium longum, and Lactobacillus acidophilus. Additionally, 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone and 5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone strongly inhibited the growth of C. difficile and C. perfringens, but did not inhibit the growth of E. coli. Taken together, these results indicate that persimmon roots-derived materials and some of 1,4-naphthoquinone's derivatives could be useful preventive agents against diseases caused by harmful intestinal bacteria.
This study is to suggest the government's support direction for the small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) by examining the relations among technology level, innovation factors, entrepreneur's characteristics, and start-up reasons. The management bottlenecks and the necessary fields of government's support are also investigated across the company's growth stages. Empirical analysis was conducted based on the 318 Korean SMEs' data receiving the Venture and/or Inno-biz certification. Results show that managing difficulties of the company have typical pattern according to the stage of growth. The characteristics of an entrepreneur such as age, education background and past experience affect the early stage of starting business. We also found that the technology level is closely connected with operational innovation activities and circumstances, entrepreneur's characteristics, start-up motives, and technological innovation activities.
The protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) reaction kinetics has been studied to evaluate its effect on the monoclonal antibody (Mab) refolding and assembly which accompanies disulfide bend formation. The MAb in vitro assembly experiments showed that the assembly rate of heavy and light chains can be greatly enhanced in the presence of PDI as compared to the rate of assembly obtained by the air-oxidation. The reassembly patterns of MAb in-termediates were identical for both with and without PDI, suggesting that the PDI does not determine the MAb assembly pathway, but rather facilitates the rate of MAb assembly by promoting PDI catalyzed disulfide bond formation. The effect of growth rate on PDI activities for MAb production has also been examined by using continuous culture system. The specific MAb productivity of hybridoma cells decreased as the growth rate increased. However, PDI activities were nearly constant fur a wide range of growth rates except very high growth rate, indicating that no direct correlation between PDI activity and specific MAb productivity exists.
