The main purpose of this study was to identify the effects of integrated stress management program on the stress symptoms of psychophysiological patients. especially patients with peptic ulcer. The study employed a quasi-experimental design using two different experimental groups. The samples in the integrated stress management program participated in autogenic training with biofeedback. discussions on effective coping method. cognitive. behavioral, and emotional management. They were also provided with an educational booklet on stress management and an tape on progressive muscie relaxation. Each session lasted one hour and the program consisted of seven sessions over four weeks. The other group was only given an tape on progressive muscle relaxation. The data were collected from May 20 to september 25, 1996. A total 47 patients from one university hospital located in Seoul participated, experiment group 1(integrated stress management training) had 23 subjects and experiment group 2(progressive muscle relaxation training) had 24 subjects. The effects of these programs were measured by the stress symptom scale developed by Kogan(1991) which was translated by Lee(1992) and the healing status of the ulcer evaluated by a physician. The data were analyzed using Chi-square test, t- test, ANOVA, repeated measure ANOVA. The result are as follows : 1. The integrated stress management group reported a significantly lower stress symptom score than the group given the progressive muscle relaxation only. 2. The integrated stress management group showed a significantly improved ulcer status as compared to the group given a progressive muscle relaxation only. In conclusion, it was found that the integrated stress management program was more effective in decreasing self-reported stress and physiological symptoms among patients with peptic ulcer as compared to the progressive muscle relaxation group. Based on this finding, the following suggestions can be made. 1. It is necessary to broaden the scope of nursing practice for psychophysiological patients so nurses can include stress management as part of patient care. 2. It is necessary to develop stress management program for other patients whose symptoms are known to be related to stress. 3. It is necessary to replicated this study with a larger sample in different settings.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the pain management education on pain of the terminal cancer patients at home. For evaluating the effectiveness of the intervention modified Patient Outcome Questionnaire (APS, 1995) including patients concerns with cancer pain management, pain intensity, and interference of daily activities related to pain were measured before and after the education in control group and experimental group and the differences were compared with each other. Satisfaction with pain management was measured after the intervention. Pain management education was delivered to 16 experimental group patients by home care nurses, who were provided with 3-hour education on cancer pain management by one of the researchers. Pain management education included common misconceptions about cancer pain control and pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions and emphasis was put on the importance of pain reports and patients' active participation in pain management. The results of the study were as follows. Patients concerns with pain management were decreased more greatly in the experimental group than those of the control group. The worst, average, and present pain intensities during the last 24 hours were decreased more greatly in the experimental group, and total score and each subcategory of the interference of daily living, except walking, were decreased more greatly in the experimental group. And satisfaction score with total pain management and nurses response to the pain reports were higher in the experimental group. The results of this study suggest that pain management education given to the patients by home care nurses is a very useful intervention to improve pain of the cancer patients at home. This positive result is thought to derive from patients' active pain report and participation in pain control and the use of powder form sustained release morphine for breakthrough pain control in part. Further studies with increased sample size from more institutions are recommended and early introduction of short acting morphine is strongly suggested for effective cancer pain control.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate a joint health self-management program for knee osteoarthritis elders in communities. Methods: This program was developed based on the IMB (information-motivationbehavioral skills) model. The program methods include education, setting and achieving goals, sharing experiences, telephone counseling, and self-monitoring. The topics of the program include joint assessment, exercise, massage, joint protection, medication, depression management, diet, and healthcare approach. The research was conducted following the principles of the nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Participants were 26 subjects in the experimental group, and 27 subjects in the control group. The experimental group participated in the self-management program, and the control group received general education. Results: Both post-test scores of personal motivation, social motivation, behavior skill, self-management behavior, joint pain, joint stiffness, physical function disability, right knee extension, left knee extension, and depression were significantly different between the experimental group and the control group. Conclusion: The results of the study can be used to develop and standardize a systematic joint health self-management program. Further research is highly recommended to develop a strategy to continuously facilitate self-management of osteoarthritis patients' procedures.
Objectives : KIOM(Korean Institute of Oriental Medicine) built up korean medical paper database and services it through information portal OASIS. The database are updated about 1,600 papers and 48,000 references annually. Second we improved the refining process using web based system to raise up data quality. And third we developed the manager functions of web based system to control and check the working process. Conclusions : If we add korean medical dictionary and link outside paper database in the future, we hope that work efficiency and data quality will be raised more. And because the database schema of OASIS system and developed system are different, we are implementing the data transformation system.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop and to determine the effects of an integrated symptom management program for prevention of recurrent cardiac events after percutaneous coronary intervention. Methods: Subjects consisted of 58 CAD patients (experimental group: 30, control group: 28). The experimental group participated in an integrated symptom management program for 6 months which was composed of tailored education, stress management, exercise, diet, deep breathing, music therapy, periodical telephone monitoring and a daily log. The control group received the usual care. Results: The experimental group significantly decreased symptom experiences and the level of LDL compared to the control group. The experimental group significantly increased self care activity and quality of life compared to the control group. Although no significant difference was found in cardiac recurrence, the experimental group had fewer recurrences. Conclusion: These results suggest that an integrated symptom management program for prevention of recurrent cardiac events after percutaneous coronary intervention can improve symptom aggravation, recurrent rate, self care activity and quality of life. Nursing interventions are needed to maintain and further enhance the quality of life of these patients and the interventions should be implemented in the overall transition period.
This study is desinged to examine for radiation protection effect of Protaetia Brevitarsis Larvae extracts on the blood and prostate of male rat as a natural radiation protection agent. 5 groups were classified using 90 male rat as experimental animals. Each group was clssified as normal control group (NC Group), the group administered protaetia brevitarsis larvae extracts (PBE Group), irradiated group (IR Group), irradiated group after administration of protaetia brevitarsis larvae extracts (PBE+IR Group), the group administered protaetia brevitarsis larvae extracts after irradiaton (IR+PBE Group). In IR Group, 7 Gy/h of Co-60 gamma ray was irradiated to SD rats. In PBE+IR Group, protaetia brevitarsis larvae extacts wewe injected at 200 mg/kg/day for 14 days before irradiation, In IR+PBE Group, protaetia brevitarsis larvae extract was injeted after irradiation. On the 1, 7 and 21 days after irradiation, the experimental animals were sacrificed to evaluate the changes in blood cell component, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, histopathological evaluation of the liver and prostate gland. As a result, the PBE+IR Group and IR+PBE Group showed a significantly recovery of white blood cell (p<0.01, p<0.01), platelet (p<0.01, p<0.01) than the IR Group. It was also confirmed that SOD activity of PBE+IR Group (p<0.01) and IR+PBE Group (p<0.01) was significantly increased than the IR Group. Also PBE+IR Group and IR+PBE Group showed less inflammatory reactions of cystoplasm in the prostate gland than the IR Group. In conclusion, the protaetia brevitarsis larvae have radioprotection effect against blood and prostate gland. It is expected to be useful for research of radiation protection agent.
