Visual MODFLOW, a three dimensional groundwater flow model, was used to analyze effects of a weir construction in an alluvial stream on the nearby groundwater flow system. A hypothetical conceptual model was developed to investigate how the groundwater level and the water budget could change after a weir construction depending on the location of tributary streams. A site example, dealing with the Juksan weir installed in the Yeongsan River, was also demonstrated to predict the effects of the weir construction. Model results show that impacts of a weir construction on the groundwater flow system greatly vary depending on how far a tributary is located and whether it is located downstream or upstream from the weir. Therefore, consideration of the location of tributaries in planning the location of a weir could effectively minimize the impacts of a weir construction on the groundwater flow system. It is also demonstrated that model results are highly dependent upon how the model is dealing with small tributaries and agricultural drainage channels, which can be easily found nearby the main streams, acting as major water bodies for groundwater discharge. The model for the Juksan area shows that the weir construction will change the direction of groundwater flow in some areas, leading to changes of groundwater quality and interaction of the Yeongsan River to the aquifer from a gaining to a losing stream. The model also predicted the areas where rise of groundwater level caused by the Juksan weir could adversely affect plant growth, and thereby suggested installing new drainage channels as a countermeasure to drawdown the groundwater level.

About 90% of groundwater wells in Jeju Island are reported to be under the threat of contamination by infiltration of the surface pollutants. Most of those wells have improperly grouted annulus which is an empty space between the well and the inner casing. As a remedy to this problem, some of the wells were re-grouted by filling the annulus with cement without lifting an inner casing. In order to evaluate whether this method is appropriate for the geological structure of Jeju Island, two wells (W1 and W2) were selected and this method was applied. The water holding capacity did not decrease while the nitrate levels decreased from 16.8 and 20.2 to 6.8 and 13.8 mg/L in W1 and W2, respectively. The higher nitrate level in W2 is deemed to be influenced by the livestock farms located in the upper area of the well. In addition, transmissivity of the vedose zone was higher in W2 than W1, potentially facilitating the transport of nitrate to the groundwater. The overall result of this study suggests re-grouting of wells for the purpose of protecting water quality of goundwater should take into account geological structure of vadose zone as well as appropriate source control of the contaminants.
The groundwater chemistry is heavily influenced by land use. This study has investigated the groundwater quality and contamination characteristic associated with land use. Contamination index ($C_d$) was estimated for evaluating and areal distribution of groundwater contamination degree. Groundwater samples collected from 216 locations in the study area show great variability in chemical composition. Electrical conductance ranges from 100 to $31,360\;{\mu}S/cm$. The pH values are between 4.6 (acidic) and 8.57 (weak alkaline). The water types predominantly represent the $Ca-HCO_3$ and $Ca-Na-HCO_3$ types, whereas, in the residential and business areas, the water type is shifted to (Na, Ca)-Cl type with rich concentration of Cl. The $C_d$ values of the study area range from 1.1 to 117.6 with a mean of 9.56.

The quality of groundwater used for natural mineral water should be strictly regulated on international level by hydrogeology experts and officials because groundwater is greatly subjected to contaminations and its aquifer system may be easily destroyed by external reasons. A total of 18 natural mineral water plants exist in Precambrian metamorphic terrains of the Gyunggi massif and Yeungam massif. The g개undwater quality for the natural mineral water investigated in hydrochemical aspects shows that pH ranges from 6.85 to 8.02 with an average of 7.52. The electric conductivity (EC) and hardness average 134.1 $\mu$S/cm and 43.5, respectively, which are relatively low to the total average (151.4 $\mu$S/cm and 57.9). The contents of major cations and anions are in the order of $Ca^{2+}$>$Na^{+}$>Mg$^{2+}$>K$^{+}$ and HCO$_3$$^{-}$ >SO$_4$$^{2-}$ >Cl$^{-}$ >F$^{-}$ , respectively. The dominant water types determined by Piper diagram are $Ca^{2+}$-$Na^{+}$-HCO$^{-}$$_3$and $Ca^{2+}$-HCO$^{-}$$_3$, mainly due to the dissolution of plagioclase in the host rocks. Representative correlation coefficients between chemical species are $Ca^{2+}$-HCO$^{-}$$_3$(0.92), $Ca^{2+}$-Cl$^{-}$ (0.63), $Na^{+}$-F$^{-}$ (0.67), HCO$^{-}$$_3$-Cl$^{-}$ (0.66), and $Na^{+}$-HCO$^{-}$$_3$(0.63). The determinative. coefficients between $Ca^{2+}$ and HCO$^{-}$$_3$, and (Ca$^{2+}$+$Na^{+}$+K$^{+}$ and EC art highest among the elements. According to the saturation index, most chemical species are undersaturated with respect to major minerals, except for some silica phases. In viewpoint of phase equilibrium, the chemical evolution of the groundwater may continue to proceed with increasing pH because the groundwater is undersaturated with respect to feldspars.
In this study, the evaluation standard for nitrate nitrogen contamination degree (WELCUP) was established using six factors that influence the groundwater quality in Jeju Island. To do this, weightings, ranges, and ratings were assigned for each factor and the relative possibility of nitrate nitrogen contamination degree was evaluated using WELCUP index for each well. As a result of calculating the WELCUP index using groundwater quality data of 5,112 wells in Jeju Island for 27 years (1993-2019), all 61 wells with the WELCUP index value higher than 100 are distributed in Daejung and Hangyung watershed with relatively large area of farmland in Jeju Island. In particular, as the ratio of private wells is more than 64%, it is necessary that systematic management is needed for private wells in terms of nitrate nitrogen contamination. Consequently, based on the results of applying the WELCUP evaluation standard, it is necessary to select the prioritization of nitrate nitrogen contamination pathways project for groundwater wells in Jeju Island.
The effect of land use of an alluvial watershed in the upper North Han river basin on groundwater quality were investigated. Existing 20 farm wells were selected as monitoring wells representing different land uses of residential, arable(paddy and field),

Central and regional government agencies collaborate to monitor and report on the quality of New Zealand's groundwater resources. Measurements from around 1,100 water wells representing the main economic aquifers are collected each season and used to prepare regional or national reports on its state, and trends over time. New Zealand's groundwater quality is of a relatively high standard by international standards, but is influenced by human activities and can also be affected by naturally occurring degrading processes.

Groundwater in the Waikatoregion is a valuable resource for agriculture, water supply, forestry and industries. The 434,000 ha study area comprises the upper Waikato River catchment from the outflow of Lake Taupo (New Zealand's largest lake) through to Lake Karapiro (a man-made hydro lake with high recreational value) (Figure 1). Water quality in the area is naturally high. However, there are indications that this quality is deteriorating as a result of land use intensification and deforestation. Compounding this concern for decision makers is the lag time between land use changes and the realisation of effects on groundwater and surface water quality. It is expected that the effects of land use changes have not yet fully manifested, and additional intensification may take decadesto fully develop, further compounding the deterioration. Consequently, Environment Waikato (EW) have proposed a programme of work to develop a groundwater model to assist managing water quality and appropriate policy development within the catchment. One of the most important and critical decisions of any modelling exercise is the choice of the modelling platform to be used. It must not inhibit future decision making and scenario exploration and needs to allow as accurate representation of reality as feasible. With this in mind, EW requested that two modelling platforms, MODFLOW/MT3DMS and FEFLOW, be assessed for their ability to deliver the long-term modelling objectives for this project. The two platforms were compared alongside various selection criteria including complexity of model set-up and development, computational burden, ease and accuracy of representing surface water-groundwater interactions, precision in predictive scenarios and ease with which the model input and output files could be interrogated. This latter criteria is essential for the thorough assessment of predictive uncertainty with third-party software, such as PEST. This paper will focus on the attributes of each modelling platform and the comparison of the two approaches against the key criteria in the selection process. Primarily due to the ease of handling and developing input files and interrogating output files, MODFLOW/MT3DMS was selected as the preferred platform. Other advantages and disadvantages of the two modelling platforms were somewhat balanced. A preliminary regional groundwater numerical model of the study area was subsequently constructed. The model simulates steady state groundwater and surface water flows using MODFLOW and transient contaminant transport with MT3DMS, focussing on nitrate nitrogen (as a conservative solute). Geological information for this project was provided by GNS Science. Professional peer review was completed by Dr. Vince Bidwell (of Lincoln Environmental).
A nitrate-contaminated groundwater was hydrogeochemically investigated to estimate the factors controlling groundwater quality in an alluvial fan area. Even though monthly groundwater levels increased with monthly rainfalls, the monthly $NO_3^--N$ concentrations in groundwater showed a small variation, mostly exceeding a maximum contaminant level of 10 mg $L^{-1}$ in environmental quality standards for groundwater during 2003. The 2003 annual groundwater recharge was 1,730 mm =20,056 mm-18,326 mm. Where 20,056 mm and 18,326 mm are annual sum of daily increase and decrease in ground water level. However, the annual sum of increase in ground water level (20,056 mm) was approximately 10 times higher than annual rainfall. Moreover, the annual sum of daily ground water level decrease (-18,326mm) showed that a large amount of groundwater was discharged with $NO_3^-$-contamination. Hydrogeochemically, a large amount of groundwater input and output through the alluvial fan area were observed after rainfall with a considerably high concentration of $NO_3^-$. Consequently, this alluvial fan area including forest area reflects on the evidence under the condition of 'nitrogen excess' or 'nitrogen saturation'. In addition, such a large amount of groundwater outflow can cause environmental damage in surface water, associated with $NO_3^-$- contamination. This study also expects that this hydrogeochemical data will be useful for water management.
