In this study, the concepts of soil degradation, soil pollution and soil damage are defined, and the domestic and foreign administrative systems related to soil pollution and soil damage management are analyzed. In case of foreign countries, laws and regulations on the soil conservation and soil damage management were analyzed. In case of Korea, the present state of the legal system governing soil pollution and damage management was analyzed in each aspect. Through this study, suggestions for amendments of relevant laws were proposed by establishing policy direction for integrated management of soil pollution and soil damage. The results of this study will provide a basis for integrated management of soil pollution and damage, and it can be utilized in establishing integrated management strategy of long term soil conservation and sustaninable soil development at national level.

An optimization model was developed for groundwater development and management in coastal areas. The optimization model consists of coastal groundwater flow model and optimization techniques. The objective of this work is to validate sharp-interface model which is one of major components of the optimization model. A laboratory experimental model is built to simulate freshwater lens, i.e., layer of freshwater floating on top of saltwater, phenomena. Experimental results for the position of fresh-saltwater sharp-interface and the salinity in well are compared with numerical results. Average ratio of relative error is estimated approximately between 2.91% and 4.39%. And the numerical results are in good agreement with the laboratory results of water quality in well in addition to the position of sharp-interface. Accordingly the evaluation of coastal groundwater flow using sharp-interface model can produce reasonable results.

The purpose of this study is to improve the Original DRASTIC Model (ODM) for the assessment of groundwater contamination vulnerability on the GIS platform. Miryang City of urban and rural features was selected for the study area to accomplish the research purpose. Advanced DRASTIC Model (ADM) was developed adding two more DRASTIC factors of lineament density and landuse to ODM. The fuzzy logic was also applied to ODM and ADM to improve their ability in evaluating the groundwater contamination vulnerability. Although the vulnerability map of ADM was a little simpler than that of ODM, it increased the area of the low vulnerability sector. The groundwater vulnerability maps of ODM and ADM using DRASTIC Indices represented the more detailed descriptions than those from the overlap of thematic maps, and their qualities were improved by the application of fuzzy technique. The vulnerability maps of ODM, ADM and FDM was evaluated by NO3-N concentrations in the study area. It was proved that ADM including lineament density and landuse factors produced a more reliable groundwater vulnerability map, and fuzzy ADM (FDM) made the best detailed groundwater vulnerability map with the significant statistical results.

Various fundamental and practical theories and technologies are needed for the development of Best Management Practices (BMPs) to manage the problems. The objectives of this paper was to investigate the effect of fertilizer and Non-point suource (NPS) pollution discharges from the field. The effect of fertilizer application was measured with respect to 10 % and 20 % slopes, respectively, using artificial rainfall simulator. The effect of fertilizer application on runoff was not significant because the effect of slope and rainfall intensity were overwhelmed. Runoff from 20 % plots was 21 % larger than that from 10 % plots. While groundwater discharge from 10 % plots was about 70 % larger than that from 20 % plots. It was concluded that runoff and groundwater discharge were largely affected by slope. T-N concentration in groundwater was much higher than that in runoff for both 10 % and 20 % plots. While T-P concentration in groundwater was lower than that in runoff. It explained that T-N moved well through soil pores without adsorption and other chemical reactions but T-P was well adsorbed on the surface of soil particles.

The groundwater quality through livestock excreta survey based on "Act of the management and use of livestock excreta" was investigated by selecting sampling sites within 1 km of the farmland without considering hydrogeological units. However, these sites can be affected by various pollution sources such as chemical fertilizers and livestock excretions. Additionally, the effects of pollution sources on groundwater quality in the sites cannot be clearly distinguished from naturally occurring backgrounds. In this study, a method was developed to select the sampling sites for groundwater quality through livestock excreta survey in order to understand the effects of pollution sources especially livestock excreta. First, the concentrations of nitrate within the radius of 200 m, 300 m, 500 m and 750 m, respectively, from the farms regarded as pollution sources in hydrogeological units were compared in 2016-2017. All the nitrate concentrations at 200 - 500 m from the farms exceeded a background concentration, 13.3 mg/L. Those at 750 m and the background concentrations measured by the Ministry of Environment were comparable. Therefore, the appropriate radius was suggested as 500 m for livestock excretions survey. In this study, the areas within 500 m from the farms could be considered under the influence of livestock excretions, while those beyond 500 from the pollution sources as background in hydrogeological units. The developed method was validated by applying it to the sites selected based on both administrative divisions and watersheds for livestock excretion survey. The average densities for the developed method were 0.82 and 0.39 points/km2, respectively, which were considered as appropriate levels according to those of the European Environmental Agency.
Grounwater level applied on dredged and reclaimed clay layer was assumed to be the same value under design criterion as field test one, but actually differences are found through the monitoring test. In this study, a case study of measuring residual groundwater level is performed in ground improvement construction of Gwangyang container terminal and hinterland. With priority given to residual groundwater level measured during construction and management period of 9 years, it is investigated that residual groundwater level (R. GWL) could be applied reasonably to the design, construction, and use stages of the container harbor and land development.
Burial sites are constructed for the purpose of controlling air-born livestock diseases such as avian influenza and foot-and-mouth outbreak. As most of the burial sites are located in the agricultural land use, public concerns are mounting about soil and groundwater contamination. During precipitation events, contaminated baseflows are released from the burial sites into surface waters. Baseflow are therefore required to be managed properly, by monitoring and even by remediation means. We propose each burial sites should be regarded as a point source possibly degrade groundwater, thus be managed in watershed scale for the purpose of surface water quality conservation.

Field observations were used to study the characteristics and influence of groundwater level fluctuations on vegetation development on the natural beach of a sandy barrier island, in the Nakdong River estuary. The spatial/temporal fluctuations of the groundwater level and the interactions with the external forces (weather, ocean wave and tide) were analyzed. The results indicated that when it rains the groundwater level rises. During summer, when precipitation intensity is greater than 20 mm/hour, it rose rapidly over 20 cm. Subsequently, it fell gradually during periods of no precipitation. Seasonal characteristics indicated that the groundwater level was high during the summer rainy season and tended to fall in the winter dry season. The time-averaged groundwater level, observed from the four observations over 3 years (2012-2014), was about 1.47 m, higher than mean sea level (M.S.L.). It was shown that the average annual groundwater level rises toward the land rather than showing intertidal patterns observation. Differences in the presence or absence of a coastal sand dunes affected the progress of vegetation. In other words, in environments of saltwater intrusion where the groundwater level varies, dependent on the distance from the shoreline and bottom slope, sand dunes can be provided to affect soil conditions and groundwater, so that vegetation can be grown reliably.
Groundwater in Jeju Island, flowing through main stream, is spring water from underground. To set a fixed quantity of groundwater flowing from surface in a hydrological view, 4 downstream (Woedo stream, Gangjung stream, Yeonwoe stream and Ongpo stream) were selected to calculate the characteristic of baseflow and the base-flow discharge through the data on tachometry. There were 11 to 14 level peak caused by runoff, mostly occurred during monsoon season. Also, duration of runoff was 15 to 25 hours, well reflecting the characteristic of inclined, short stream length in Jeju Island and pervious hydrogeographical feature. In case of Gangjung stream, Yeonwoe stream and Ongpo stream, variation of stream water level by baseflow rose above during summer, which was closely linked to the distribution of seasonal precipitation. From autumn to spring, water level fell below while that of Woedo stream remained the same all year round. Data on the water level observed in Woedo stream and Gangjung stream in every single minutes was applied to weir formula(equation of Oki and Govinda Rao) to calculate baseflow discharge. Also, using the data on current and water level calculated in Ongpo stream and Yeonwoe stream, water level-water flow rating was applied to assess base flow discharge.

Hydraulic conductivity of unconsolidated media can be determined by aquifer tests, laboratory tests and empirical equations based on grain size analysis. Commonly, the different methods give different hydraulic conductivities. Grain size measurements were done to determine hydraulic conductivity, using 184 soil samples collected from eight boreholes in a riverbank filtration area, Daesan-Myeon, Changwon City, Korea, Pumping tests were conducted at the riverbank filtration area. The average hydraulic conductivity by the empirical relations from grain size measurements comes out around $10^{-2}m/s$, 22 to 55 times higher than by the pumping test analyses. The hydraulic conductivity obtained from the empirical equations is interpreted to have a relationship with steady-state condition while that obtained from the pumping tests is interpreted to have a relationship with unsteady-state condition. Thus, hydraulic conductivity obtained from various methods should be critically analyzed for reasonable management of groundwater development.
