In this experiment, persulfate, a strong oxidant for ISCO (In-Situ Chemical Oxidation) was used to degraded RDX in artificial ground water at ambient temperature. Results of RDX degradation by persulfate in a batch reactor showed that the oxidation reaction was pseudo first order with estimated Ea (activation energy) of $1.14{\times}10^2kJ/mol$ and the rate was increased with the increase of reaction temperature. The oxidation of RDX by persulfate increased slightly with the increase of initial solution pH from 4 to 8. The RDX oxidation rate increased 13 times at pH 10 compared with that at pH 4, however, alkaline hydrolysis was found to be the main reaction of RDX degradation rather than oxidation. The study also showed that the oxidation rate of RDX by persulfate was linearly dependent upon the molar ratios of persulfate to RDX from 5 : 1 up to 100 : 1, with a proportion constant of $4{\times}10^{-4}$ ($min^{-1}$/molar ratio) at $70^{\circ}C$. While NOM (Natural Organic Matter) exerted negative effects on the oxidation rate of RDX by persulfate, with a proportion constant of $1.21{\times}10^{-4}$ ($min^{-1}{\cdot}L/mg-NOM$) at $70^{\circ}C$ and persulfate/NOM molar ratio of 10/1. The decrease in RDX oxidation rate was linearly dependent upon the added NOM concentration. However, the estimated activation energy in the presence of 20 mg-NOM/L was within 3.3% error compared to that without NOM, which implies the addition of NOM does not alter intrinsic oxidation reaction.

The water in surface of the earth is frozen under freezing point. The freezing phenomenon, which causes the volume change of soils, affects on the behavior of soils and causes the significant damage on the geotechnical structures. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of elastic waves in sand-silt mixtures using small size freezing cells, which reflect the frozen ground condition due to temperature change. Experiments are carried out in a nylon cell designed to freeze soils from top to bottom. Bender elements and piezo disk elements are used as the shear and compressional wave transducers. Three pairs of bender elements and piezo disk elements are placed on three locations along the depth. The specimen, which is prepared by mixing sand and silt, is frozen in the refrigerator. The temperature of soils changes from $20^{\circ}C$ to $-10^{\circ}C$. The velocities, resonant frequencies and amplitudes of the shear and compressional waves are continuously measured. Experimental results show that the shear and compressional wave velocities and resonant frequencies increase dramatically near the freezing points. The amplitudes of shear and compressional waves show the different tendency. The dominant factors that affect on the shear wave velocity change from the effective stress to the ice bonding due to freezing. This study provides basic information about the characteristics of elastic waves due to the soil freezing.
Though admitting that, in light of the recent archaeological trend, the excavation on relics of Sam-gama (a sort of kiln steaming the hemp) is increasingly reported, little efforts by far have been made not only to restore its traditional structure design but also to research hardly the change of hemp-steaming technologies in ages. In this regard, this paper shows the exploration of structural method and design as well as operability with regard to Sam-gut, traditional hemp-processing equipment that was recently reconstructed in Jungsun, Kangwon Province. Samgut, generally positioned at the waterside area, is an traditional device for steaming hemp to get bast fibers from the raw material of hemp, principally consisting of HWA-JIP(fire-place) to obtain steams by feeding fire ad Mong-got(boiling chamber) to make the hemp steamed after stacking. More specifically, thick round-logs were piled at the bottom of Hwajip prior to stacking stones around its circumferential area. When the timber positioned below gets burned with high temperature to heat stones existing in the upper side, waters then poured onto it after laying a bundle of grass and soil up to the boiled stones. If so, there generates hot vapor, which is conveyed to Monggot to steam the hemp. Functionally, it is of outstanding importance that Samgut is capable of producing high-temperature water vapors instantaneously under the intensive manpower, thus being constructed achievable for those purposes. The Samgut made by digging the ground is an instant facility that is closed after use. The remains, which were used to generate higher thermal power for steaming hemp, make it hard to excavate the historic traits because there left little vestiges in the soil, which means keen attention must be paid to find out the trace of Smgama relics. Future research stall be focused on collection of broader data regarding Samgut including technological review in extracting bas fibers from the hemp.
Kongsfjorden near Korean Arctic Station, Dasan, is a glacial fjord in the Svalbard archipelago, Arctic that is influenced by both Atlantic and Arctic water masses. During the Arctic field season August 2002, surface temperature, salinity, density, and phytoplankton biomass (chi a) was measured in Kongsfjorden. A total of 15 surface samples were collected for the phytoplankton related measurements. Chl a values ranged from 0.08 to 1.4mg chi a $m^{-3}$ (mean of 0.53mg chl a $m^{-3}$) in the overall surface stations. The highest values of the chi a concentrations (> 1.0mg chi a $m^{-3}$) were found near glacier in the northeastern part of Kongsfjorden. Nanoplanktonic (< $20{\mu}m$) phytoflagellates were important contributors for the increase of the chi a. The nano-sized phytoflagellates accounted for more than 90% of the total chi a biomass in the study area. Surface temperatures and salinities ranged from 2.5 to $7.18^{\circ}C$ (mean of $4.65^{\circ}C$) and from 22.55 to 32.97 psu (mean of 30.16 psu), respectively. The physical factors were not highly correlated with phytoplankton distribution. The character of surface water due to down-fjord wind was highly similar to phytoplankton distribution. Drifting ice, freshwater, and semdiment inputs from large tidal glaciers located in the inner part of Konsfjorden create steep physico- and biogeochemical environmental gradients along the length of this ford. The glacial inputs cause reduced biodiversity biomass and productivity in the pelagic community in the inner fjord. Primary production of benthic and pelagic microalgae is reduced due to the limited light levels in the turbid and mixed inner waters. The magnitude of glacial effects diminishes towards the outer fjord. Kongsfjorden is an important feeding ground fer marine mammals and seabirds. Especially, seabirds play the largest energy intake and also export nutrients for primary production of the marine microalgae. Kongsfjorden has received a lot of research attention as a site for exploring the impacts of climate changes. Dasan Station in Kongsfjorden will be an important Arctic site for monitoring and detecting future environmental changes.
Metolachlor may pose a threat to surface and ground water qualities due to its high solubility in water, Zerovalent iron (ZVI) releases $e^-$ which can degrade the organochlorinated compounds. The objective of this research was to evaluate the kinetics of metolachlor degradation as affected by ZVI sources [Peerless unannealed (PU) and Peerless annealed (PA)] and ZVI levels (1 and 5%) under batch conditions at different metolachlor concentrations (200 and 1000 mg/l) and temperatures (15, 25, and $35^{\circ}C$). The effectiveness of ZVI on metolachlor degradation was assessed by characterizing the dechlorinated metolachlor byproduct molecules. Metolachlor degradation by ZVI followed the first-ordered kinetics with a higher rate constant at higher level of ZVI treatment. At 5% (w/v) of PU and PA treatment, the half-lives of metolachlor degradation were 9.93 and 6.51 h and all of the initial metolachlor were degraded in 72 and 48 h, respectively. Rate constants (k) of metolachlor degradation were higher at the lower initial metolachlor concentration. The metolachlor degradation by ZVI was temperature dependent showing that the rate constant (k) at 15, 25, and $35^{\circ}C$ were 0.0805, 0.1017, and 0.3116 /h, respectively. The ZVI-mediated metolachlor degradation yielded two byproduct molecules identified as dechlorinated metolachlor $(C_{13}H_{18}NO)$ and dechlorinated-dealkylated metolachlor $(C_{12}H_{17}NO)$. The PA ZVI was more effective than PU ZVI in metolachlor degradation.
Because the allowable current loading of buried electrical transmission cables is frequently limited by the maximum permissible temperature of the cable or of the surrounding ground, there is a need fur cable backfill materials that can maintain a low thermal resistivity even while subjected to high temperatures for prolonged periods. Temperatures greater than $50^{\circ}C\;to\;60^{\circ}C$ may lead to breakdown of cable insulation and thermal runaway if the surrounding backfill material is unable to dissipate the heat as rapidly as it is generated. This paper describes the results of studies aimed at the development of backfill material to reduce the thermal resistivity. A large number of different additive materials were tested to determine their applicability as a substitute material. Tests were carried out for Dongrim river sand, a relatively uniform sand of very high thermal resistivity, $50^{\circ}C-cm/watt\;at\;10\%$ water content, $260^{\circ}C-cnuwatt$ when dry, and Jinsan granite screenings, and D-2 (sand and granite screenings mixture), E-1 (rubble and granite screenings mixture), a well-graded materials with low thermal resistivity, about $35^{\circ}C-cm/watt$ when at 10 percent water content, $100^{\circ}C-cm/watt$ when dry. Based on this research, 3 types of backfill materials were suggested for improved materials with low thermal resistivity and the applicability was assessed through field tests.
In order to improve top shell seed production techniques spawning and larvae rearing were done in rearing tanks. Growth of young top shell in the nursing ground were also investigated. For induced spawning, top shells were maintained in still water during night time. Then they were treated with ultra violet iradiated sea water after dried up in air for 60 minutes. Spawning rate were 10 to $39.77\%$. It was found that young top shells moved in the growing grounds from nursing grounds when they reached approximately 30-40mm in shell heignt. Among main food algae for top shell in the natural growing grounds, sea mustard were melted away during June. Therefore, presence of another food algae such as Ecklonia cava or Sargassum spp. seems to be the main limiting factor for survival of top shell during summer. The tolerance of top shells ranging from 30mm to 60mm to low density of seawater for were tested at the temperature between 29.5 and $31.4^{\circ}C$. Hundred percent mortality occoured in 20, 55 and 90 hours after first stocking at the specific gravity of 1.010, 1.015, and 1.020, respectively.
For improvement of fishermen's income by oyster cultivation in eastern coast of Korea, the spats of oyster (Crassostrea gigas) collected from Hadong in southern coast of Korea were transplanted to Chumunjin and cultured by hanging long line method from August 1994 to July 1995 for examination of their growth and ground environmental conditions. The environmental conditions show the annual range of water temperature as 8.33~$25.62^{\circ}C$, salinity as 32.84~$34.28\textperthousand$, PO4-P as 0.09~0.40$\mu$g-at/1, dissolived inorganic nitrogen (DIN) as 0.32~3.21$\mu$g-at/1. The growth of oyster in hanging culture was as follows : 88.7mm (shell hight) in upper layer (7m), 84.9mm in middle layer (10m) and 78.0mm in lower layer (13m) after one-year cultivation. Thus, the oysters in upper layer had grown relatively faster than those in lower layer. The relationships between shell hight (SH) and shell length (SL) in each culturing depth as follows : SL=0.5403 SH+8.5486 (r=0.9959) in upper layer, SL=0.5813 SH+3.7775 (r=0.9869) in middle layer, and SL=0.5159 SH+6.8736 (r=0.9961) in lower layer. The meat weight of oyster was the highest value as 13.24g in upper layer, and 12.68g in middle layer, and lowest as 10.96g in lower layer. The relationships between total wight (TW) and meat weight (MW) with culturing water layer were as follows : MW=0.1933 TW+0.1051 (r=0.0073) in upper layer, MW=0.1915 TW+0.1894 (r=0.9984) in middle layer, and MW=0.1650 TW+0.0558 (r=0.9983) in lower layer.
Because the allowable current loading of buried electrical transmission cables is frequently limited by the maximum permissible temperature of the cable or of the surrounding ground, there is a need for cable backfill materials that can maintain a low thermal resistivity (less than 5$0^{\circ}C$-cm/watt) even while they are subjected to high temperatures for prolonged periods. Temperatures greater than 5$0^{\circ}C$ to 6$0^{\circ}C$ may lead to breakdown of cable insulation and thermal nlnaway if the surrounding backfill material is unable to dissipate the heat as rapidly as it is generated. This paper describes the results of studies aiming at the development of backfill material to reduce the thermal resistivity. A large number of different additive materials were tested to determine their applicability as a substitute material. Tests were called out for DonUing river sand, a relatively uniffrm sand of very high thermal resistivity (5$0^{\circ}C$ -cnuwatt at 10% water content, 26$0^{\circ}C$-cm/watt when dry), and Jinsan granite screenings, and A-2(sand and gravel mixture), E-1 (rubble and granite screenings mixture), a well-graded materials with low thermal resistivity (about 35$^{\circ}C$ -cm/watt when at 10 percent water content, 10$0^{\circ}C$-cm/watt when dry). Based on this research, 3 types of backfill materials were suggested for improved materials with low thermal resistivity.
This study was carried out to establish a proper cultivation site and diagnose the drought-tolerance of Aster scaber and Synurus deltoides leaves by using Pressure-volume curves. In order to measure pressure-volume (P-V) curves, Aster scaber and Synurus deltoides were cut off above ground part and the tip of the cutting were placed in water, which was covered with a plastic bag. Samples were kept overnight (about 12 hours) in darkness at room temperature (20~25$^{\circ}C$) to achieve maximal turgor (full saturation). The pressure in the chamber was gradually increased from 0.3MPa to 1.8MPa by nitrogen gas. After measured, leaf samples were dried at 80$^{\circ}C$ for 48 hours and dry weight of each samples were determined. The result of the original bulk osmotic potential at maximum turgor ${\Psi}^{sat}_o$ sat was lower -0.8 MPa in Aster scaber leaves than -0.7 MPa Synurus deltoides leaves. Also the osmotic potential at incipient plasmolysis ${\Psi}^{tlp}_o$ in Aster scaber leave was -0.9 MPa. In contrast, the value of maximum bulk modulus of elasticity $E_{max}$ of Aster scaber leaves were approximately two folds higher than that of Synurus deltoides leaves. The values of the relative water content at incipient plasmolysis $RWC^{tlp}$ are all above 90% showing that the function of osmoregulation is somewhat better, and Vo/DW, Vt/DW, Ns/DW of Synurus deltoides leaves were approximately 1~2 times higher than that of Aster scaber leaves. Thus, responses to water relations of Aster scaber and Synurus deltoides such as ${\Psi}^{sat}_o$, ${\Psi}^{tlp}_o$, $E_{max}$, ${\Psi}_{P,max}$, $RWC^{tl}$ were shown that the Aster scaber leaves was slightly higher drought-tolerance than Synurus deltoides leaves. However, in both of Aster scaber and Synurus deltoides, occurring incipient plasmolysis at the high water content, have a relatively lower drought-tolerance property indicating that growth of these plants are cultivated appropriate in high moisture soil sites.
