  • Benzophenone (BZP) and 4-nitrotoluene (4-NT) listed as endocrine disrupting chemicals are suspected to contaminate ground water sites and soil. Analytical method for simultaneous determination of the two chemicals in soil and ground water was developed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Water (100 ml) was extracted with hexane, and soil (10 g) was extracted with methanol and hexane. Recovery in water was >72% for BZP and 90-118% for 4-NT. Recovery for 4-NT and BZP in soil was 51-59% with coefficient variation of less than 19.5%. Calibration curves showed a good linearity with $r^2=0.997$. In water and soil collected at nation-wide sites, BZP was found at 5 sites among 43 water sites at the concentration of $14.87{\pm}3.83ng/100 ml$. No 4-NT was found. It is suggested that this method is appropriate to the simultaneous quantitation of 4-NT and BZP in ground water and soil samples.

  • A mixed bacterial culture capable of mineralizing methyl tort-butyl ether (MTBE), other fuel oxygenates ethers, tertiary carbon alcohols, benzene and toluene was used to inoculate batch reactor and sequence batch reactor (SBR) to treat gasoline contaminated ground water containing about 60 mg/L MTBE, 5 mg/L benzene, 5 mg/L toluene, and low concentrations of several other aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Respirometery studies showed that MTBE degrading mixed culture could treat MTBE contaminated ground water with addition of nitrogen and phosphate. SBR was operated to demonstrate the feasibility of using suspended growth activated system for the treatment of ground water and to confirm that the respirometry derived kinetics and stoichiometric coefficients were useful for predicting reactor performance. Theoretical performance of the reactor was predicted using mathematical models calibrated with biokinetic parameters derived from respirometry studies.

  • The intake tower of D-dam located in a mountainous area positioned in the left side of the dam and its structure installed alone on the water surface then, can become target of direct lightening. To protect the intake tower from the direct lightening and indirect-lightening, lightening rod installed in the top area of the intake tower and ground pole laid under the surrounding ground. however, because the surrounding ground almost consists of a rock, it is very difficult to obtain the grounding resistance. It is main object to examine the construction plan of the optimum lightening rod equipment and ground pole with measuring the earth specific resistance of the around of the intake tower which is the scheduled area to lay the ground pole with the Wenner's 4-electric pole method and the Schlumberger's method. and using the analysis tool, ESII.

  • Ground subsidence caused by damaged water pipe and sewer is recently increasing due to the aging of city and pipeline in many city. Although many recent studies have verified characteristics of ground subsidence due to wastewater pipe breakdown, research about characteristics of ground subsidence due to water pipe is insignificant. subsidence due to water pipe is insignificant. This study aims to identify the ground failure mechanism caused by water and sewer pipe breakdown. Accordingly, we conducted an indoor model experiment to verify characteristics of ground subsidence considering characteristics of ground and ground failure. The water pipe pressure and velocity head was considered to find out ground subsidence mechanism. Also comparative analysis is conducted by analyzing relative density and fine-grain content considering embedded condition of water pipe. When the relative density and seepage pressure is low, small scale ground subsidence can occur, but when the conditions are opposite, ground subsidence occur in large scale and expands to ground level over time. Furthermore, it is acknowledgeable that ground cavity that is formed after soil run off due to seepage in deep earth, maintains steady strength and stays on the ground level for long period.

  • Deep Ocean Water (DOW) is formed within restricted area including polar sea (high latitude) by cooling of surface seawater and globally circulating in the state of isolation from surface seawater. Although it is not as obvious as estuaries mixing, brine ground water is mixture of recirculated seawater and ground water. Seawater having high osmotic pressure infiltrates into an aquifer which is connected to the sea. In order to clarify the characteristics of deep ocean water and brine ground water, we investigated their origins, chemical compositions, water qualities and resources stabilities. While concentrations of stable isotopes (/sup 18/O and ²H) in seawater is 0‰, those in brine ground water is on meteoric water line or shifted toward oxygen line. It means that origin of brine ground water is different than that of deep ocean water. The ions dissolved in seawater (Na, Ca, Mg, K) are present in constant proportions to each other and to the total salt content of seawater. However deviations in ion proportions have been observed in some brine ground water. Some causes of these exception to the rule of constant proportions are due to many chemical reactions between periphery soil and ground water. While DOW has a large quantity of functional trace metals and biological affinity relative to brine ground water, DOW has relatively small amount of harmful bacteria and artificial pollutants.

  • A theoretical study on the ground water flow adjacent to buried pipe was conducted. Incompressible and irrotational flow were considered in analytical study. Ground water flow were defined by complex potentials. Firstly, uniform flow without buried pipe was analysed and then the effect of buried pipe was considered by superposition via circle theorem. Although two kinds of flow can be added by linearity of complex potentials, investigation of the singularities of the complex potentials should be done in advance. Finally, ground water flow past a buried pipe was analysed via complex potentials and net force exerted on the buried pipe by the ground water flowing past with circulation was derived.

  • This study presents a numerical simulation model of vertical ground heat exchangers, considering unsaturated hydro static ground conditions induced by the ground water table fluctuation. Heat transfer in ground and grout is modeled by a 3-D FEM transient conductive heat transfer model, where heat transfer between circulating fluid and heat exchanging pipe is treated as 1-D quasi steady state forced convective elements. To take into account the unsaturated ground condition, soil thermal conductivity and heat capacity which are dependent on the matric suction are applied to ground elements. Parametric studies considering various ground water table conditions are conducted to investigate the influence of unsaturated hydro static ground condition on the mean heat exchange rate of ground heat exchanger. Simulation results considering water table fluctuation show 60~100% of mean heat exchange rate for a saturated soil condition and 125~208% of that for a dry soil condition. Thus consideration of unsaturated soil condition is substantially recommended for more accurate design and performance evaluation for ground heat exchangers.

  • This survey was carried out to investigate the chemical characteristics of ground water for livestock purpose and to estimate the influence of ground water quality by livestock farming. Water samples were collected three times in 2000, and analyzed for theirs chemical compositions using Korean Standard Methods for Water Quality. The EC of ground water was from 0.214 to 0.474 dS/m. $NO_3-N$ contamination range was from 3.56 to 11.81. The $SO_4{^{2-}}$ was $4.31{\sim}69.37mg/L$ and CI was $12.75{\sim}41.46mg/L$. The data of ground water quality indicated suitable quality for livestock. Also, the concentration of heavy metals in the sample could not make damage to the animals. The $NO_3-N$ concentration of the water by times are as follows: October (8.19 mg/L) > July (7.65 mg/L) > April (4.04 mg/L) with no significant differences during the livestock farming period. The average quality of groundwater for livestock is good for its purpose, and it was showed there was few influence by livestock farming.

  • Amount of ground water discharging through coastline(CGD) is small compared to the amount of river discharges. However, CGD is important for gound water development in coastal areas and for contamination of coastal waters by nutrients transported by ground water. In the previous study, a method was proposed to estimate CGD from simple data such as ground water levels at observation wells and hydraulic conductivities. In this study, the method is enhanced by taking into account complexity of coastlines. A new method is proposed to estimate average hydraulic gradient, length of coastline, and average thickness of freshwater The new method is verified against numerical solutions. It is shown that the method is able to estimate CGD from complex coastlines more accurately than the previous method.

  • With estmating drinking water demands of Ulsan city, the amount would be increased from 523,000ton/day in 2006 to 635,000 ton/day in 2016. Also, the dependence of Nakdong River on the Ulsan city as a source of drinking water will be very high up to 54.4% of total drinking water demands. Small-scale drinking water dam is no economical because of excessive construction cost and long construction period. However, development of riverbed and ground water of existing rivers is more economical than that of small-scale drinking water dam. In this study, to utilized Dongchun River as a drinking water resource, Modflow model was used to predict the amount of riverbed and ground water of Dongchun River basin. As a result, available amount of riverbed water was assumed in 6,000 ton/day by worst case (when perfect dry stream) and in case of ground water, it was assumed in 17,800 ton/day.
