The plane deformation and spatial seepage(PDSS) analysis was developed to consider 3D flow of excess pore water as well as plane deformation of ground. Here is newly developed an equivalent model for PDSS analysis, which was the purpose to reduce number of finite elements and to take the effects of smear and well resistance into consideration. As the result of PDSS analysis with applying the new model, it is showed that the settlement-tin e relationship by PDSS agrees well with those of Plane strain(PS) and axisymmetric analyses, irrespective of existence of untreated layer. And the excess pore pressure distribution by PDSS is relatively agreed with that of axisymmetric analysis, not with that of PS.

PURPOSES : Road subsidence occurs owing to road cavities, which cause many social and environmental problems, especially in cities. Recently, road cavities were detected by various ground radars and repair works were carried out against the detected cavities. The condition assessments related to the road cavities are necessary to understand the potential risk of the cavities. Therefore, in this study, a numerical study was performed to assess the various conditions of road cavities. METHODS : The numerical method adopted in this study is the discrete element approach, and it is suitable for analyzing the condition because it can consider the movement of the soil particles in the surrounded cavity areas. In addition, the triaxial test was modeled and performed under various cavity conditions inside the specimens. RESULTS : The conditions of different cavity locations and shapes were analyzed to identify the effect of cavity state. Three general cases of particle size distributions were formulated to identify the effect of surrounding ground conditions. As a result, the degree of decrement and volumetric strain were varied depending on the locations and shapes of the cavity. Only minor changes were observed when the particle size distributions were altered. CONCLUSIONS : The strength reduction was higher when the cavity formed was larger and located in the upper zone. Similar to the cavity shape, strength reduction and volume deformation are more influenced by the width than the length of the cavities. There is an influence from ground conditions such as the particle size distribution, especially on the wide cavity.

Tunnelling in urban areas, it is essential to understand existing structure-tunnel interactive behavior. Serviced structures in the city are supported by pile foundation, since they are certainly effected due to tunnelling. In this research, thus, pile load distribution and ground behavior due to tunnelling below grouped pile were investigated using laboratory model test. Grouped pile foundations were considered as 2, 3 row pile and offsets (between pile tip and tunnel crown: 0.5D, 1.0D and 1.5D for generalization to tunnel diameter, D means tunnel diameter). Soil in the tank for laboratory model test was formed by loose sand (relative density: Dr = 30%) and strain gauges were attached to the pile inner shaft to estimate distribution of axial force. Also, settlements of grouped pile and adjacent ground surface depending on the offsets were measured by LVDT and dial gauge, respectively. Tunnelling-induced deformation of underground was measured by close range photogrammetric technique. Numerical analysis was conducted to analyze and compare with results from laboratory model test and close range photogrammetry. For expression of tunnel excavation, the concept of volume loss was applied in this study, it was 1.5%. As a result from this study, far offset, the smaller reduction of pile axial load and was appeared trend of settlement was similar among them. Particulary, ratio of pile load and settlement reduction were larger when the offset is from 0.5D to 1.0D than from 1.0D to 1.5D.
It is necessary, in the light of the importance of long-term slope stability problem, to develop a simple method or tool which can figure out the possible failure surface resulting from weathering effect and other factors. The FBG(Fiber Bragg Crating) sensor system is used to estimate the correlations between the soil temperature and the slope behavior, and to find a failure surface in slopes effectively. This research is to seek for the correlation between the soil temperature distribution and the strain distribution of the reinforcing materials in an active zone by analyzing the data from the in-situ measurement so that the possible failure surface should be well defined based on the correlation. The zone of high temperature fluctuation can be regarded as one of the possible failure surface due to the weathering effect while the constant temperature depth of the ground, if exists, would not be relatively affected by the weathering process.
This study compares elastic moduli calculated using two stiffness testing methods with different strain ranges to evaluate the stress-settlement characteristics of foundation support layers. Elastic moduli were calculated by the soil stiffness gauge (SSG) in the micro-strain range and the plate load test (PLT) in the medium strain range. To apply the elastic moduli obtained by the two testing methods with different strain ranges to the design and construction of foundation soils, the correlation between each measurement value should be identified in advance. As a result of the comparative analysis of the elastic moduli calculated using the two methods in weathered soil and rock, which are representative support layers in Korea, the calculated elastic moduli differed depending on the types of soil and stress conditions. For various soil types, the static elastic modulus obtained by the PLT was reduced by 56% because of the difference in the strain level of the test compared with the dynamic elastic modulus obtained by the SSG. Therefore, the results show that it is necessary to apply corrections to the stress distribution, stress level, and dynamic effect according to the ground stiffness to effectively use the SSG instead of the PLT.

This study is to investigate the magnitude, direction and distribution of residual stresses in surface ground plate according to working conditions. The specimens were made of structural carbon steel and were machined in various grinding conditions. These were divided in two groups; heat-treated materials and non-heat-treated materials. In each working condition, let the ground specimen generate displacements using deflection-etching techniques. At the same time, these displacements were precisely measured with electronic micrometer. Through the relation formula between the plane stress and strain, which was derived using these measured data, the values of residual stress are calculated, and the results are analyzed. These results are as follows : 1. According to the working conditions in this experiment, it can be seen that the distribution of residual stress generally had same trend and the maximum residual stress remained in 20~30 ((${\mu}m$) beneath the surface. 2. It is observed that compressive residual stress changes into tensile stress in 5~20 (${\mu}m$) beneath the surface. It is suggested that such phenomenon is originated from the friction effect in grinding process. 3. As the hardness increases by the heat treatment, residual stress increases. 4. As the fatigue strength increases by the compressive residual stress, it is desirable that the dowm feed and table feed reduce. 5. It can be seen that the more great the down feed and table feed increase, the more close the changing point, where the stress changed from compressive to tensile, is colse to the surface. This is due to the resultant effects of the grinding temperature and resistence are larger than the effect of the friction.

There has been an increasing demand for introducing a base isolation system to secure the seismic safety of a nuclear power plant. However, the design criteria and the safety assessment methodology of a base isolated nuclear facility are still being developed. A performance based design concept for the base isolation system needs to be added to the general seismic design procedures. For the base isolation system, the displacement responses of isolators excited by the extended design basis earthquake are important as well as the design displacement. The possible displacement response by the extended design basis earthquake should be limited less than the failure displacement of the isolator. The failure of isolators were investigated by an experimental test to define the ultimate strain level of rubber bearings. The uncertainty analysis, considering the variations of the mechanical properties of isolators and input ground motions, was performed to estimate the probabilistic distribution of the isolator displacement. The relationship of the displacement response by each ground motion level was compared in view of a period elongation and a reduction of damping. Finally, several examples of isolator parameters are calculated and the considerations for an acceptable isolation design is discussed.
In urban area, there are several major factors to be considered in tunnel design and construction. The first is to predict the magnitude and distribution of ground movements for particular ground conditions and construction procedures. The second is to assess the potential damage to nearby structures in response to the predicted ground movements. The third is to select the measures to be taken if a potential damage is foreseen. This study is concerned primarily with the first and second stages of the problem. Particularly, this paper is focused on the second stage to assess the potential damage to the nearby building with any type of geometries and locations above ground surface. In order to solve this problem, we introduced damage parameters(angular distortion, deflection ratio, maximum building settlements, maximum differential settlements, horizontal strain, etc.), and extended these parameters into 3-dimensional safety assessment. Also, to assess the safety of any walls existing in the building, we developed a 3-dimensional analysis program, and various parametric studies for the nearby building with any type of geometries and locations were presented. In addition to these parametric studies, we compared the results of the proposed techniques with some abroad case records for particular tunnels and adjacent buildings.
This paper is results of numerical analysis on the behavior of colluvium slope with combinations of soil nails and earth anchors during excavation. In order to maintain the stability of the colluvium cut, being composed of gravel and boulder and thus local in stability being expected during slope cut, temporary reinforcing method of soil nailing with shotcrete might be used. Subsequent method of cast-in-place facing with earth anchors can be used to maintain cut slope stable permanently. For the cut slope where these methods had been applied, the numerical techniques were applied to their behaviors and investigate the stability of the slope. Limit equilibrium methods were used to confirm to maintain the slope stability during and after excavation and application of those reinforcing methods. Another numerical technique of FEM was also used to find the stress and strain as well as deformation distribution in reinforcing materials and slope ground during excavation.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the distribution patterns of displacement and acceleration fields in a nonlinear soil ground based on the interaction of high-speed train, wheel, rail, and ground. For this purpose, a high-speed train in motion was modeled as the actual wheel, and the vertical contact of wheel and rail and the lateral contact, caused by meandering motion, were simulated; this simulation was based on the moving mass analysis. The soil ground part was given the nonlinear behavior of the upper ground part by using the modified the Drucker-Prager model, and the changes in displacement and acceleration were compared with the behavior of the elastic and inelastic grounds. Using this analysis, the displacement and acceleration ranges close to the actual ground behavior were addressed. Additionally, the von-Mises stress and equivalent plastic strain at the ground were examined. Further, the equivalent plastic and total volumetric strains at each failure surface were examined. The variation in stresses, such as vertical stress, transverse pressure, and longitudinal restraint pressure of wheel-rail contact, with the time history was investigated using moving mass. In the case of nonlinear ground model, the displacement difference obtained based on the train travel is not large when compared to that of the elastic ground model, while the acceleration is caused to generate a large decrease.
