  • This vacuum preloading combined with polyacrylamide (PAM) flocculation was proposed to separating solid-liquid in waste slurry and to improving bearing capacity of soft soil ground. By using waste slurry taken from drilled shaft construction site in Shanghai, China, a series of settling column tests with four typical flocculants and one normal for waste slurry were carried out for comparative analysis. The optimal amounts for each flocculant were obtained from the column tests. Then, model tests on vacuum preloading with anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) flocculation and without flocculants were carried out. The out of water and the settlement of slurry surface ground were monitored during the model tests, and the changes in water content, particle-size and pore-size distributions in different positions after the model tests were measured and discussed. It is found that water content of the waste slurry without APAM flocculation changed from 204 to 195% by 24 hours standing and 15 hours vacuum preloading, while the water content of the waste slurry with APAM flocculation was declined from 163 to 96% by 24 hours standing, and was further reduced into 37% by 136 hours vacuum preloading, which shows that the combined method is feasible and effective.

  • An optimal hydraulic section is critical for irrigated water conservancy in seasonal frozen ground due to a large proportion of water leakage, as investigated by in-situ surveys. This is highly correlated with the frost heave of underlain soils in cold season. This paper firstly derived a practical model for frost heave of clayey soils, with temperature dependent thermal indexes incorporating phase change effect. A model test carried out on clay was used to verify the rationality of the model. A novel approach for optimizing the cross-section of irrigation canals in cold regions was suggested with live updated geometry characterized by three unique geometric constraints including slope of canal, ratio of practical flow section to the optimal and lining thickness. Allowable frost heave deformation and tensile stress in canal lining are utilized as standard in computation iterating with geometry updating while the construction cost per unit length is regarded as the eventual target in optimization. A typical section along the Jinghui irrigation canal was selected to be optimized with the above requirements satisfied. Results prove that the optimized hydraulic section exhibits smaller frost heave deformation, lower tensile stress and lower construction cost.

  • In this study, centrifugal model tests were performed to investigate the behavior of excavated earth retaining wall with the depth of excavation and different types of wall(aluminum, steel panel). Jumunjin standard sand was used for foundation soil. The raining method was adopted to form the required relative density of the model ground. The lateral earth pressure measured from tests were compared with estimated active earth pressure by Rankine's theory. The test results have shown that the earth pressure acting on the retaining wall and the rotation displacement of the wall are influenced by the depth of excavation and the type of wall. It was found from the test results that the deformation of the wall increases with the depth of excavation.

  • Copper slag is the by-producted material on the proceeding of refining the copper. To verify applications of copper slag to vertical drain material can substitute for the sands in ground improvement, laboratory soil tests and consolidation model tests were conducted. The results of consolidation model test was analyzed as the hyperbolic method. The hyperbolic method assumes that the settlement(s) versus time(t) behavior approaches a straight line describes a hyperbolic reaction. The inverse of the slope of the line would then yield the ultimate settlement. Through in this study, copper slag is compatible with vertical drain material as like sands. Copper slag compaction pile promote the consolidation settlement.

  • In this paper, nonlinear elasto-plastic analysis was performed to investigate the stability of the rapid embankment under undrained condition. The commercial code ABAQUS/Standard was used in the study. Resonant Column test (RC test) results and Ramberg-Osgood model were utilized to simulate the nonlinear behavior of soft clay. Ramgerg-Osgood model was tested whether it simulates the nonlinear behavior of the soil properly in first. Then the analysis result was compared with the previous research results. It was found that the Ramberg-Osgood model matched well with the soil behavior of soft clay in the rapid embankment under undrained condition.

  • The unsaturated layers by rainfall infiltration are not properly reflected in construction codes to do slope design. The objective of this paper is to analyze the slope behavior according to the saturation layer increase resulted from the rainfall infiltration, to do that the laboratory slope model apparatus was adopted. From the model apparatus, the variation of water content and strength parameters of the model slope were analyzed. The safety factors of model slope was decreased, if saturation layer was increased from 3.0m to 4.5m, which means ground water level 3m selected from construction codes makes higher safety level. Also, if the ground water level is located in soil surface, the lower safety level will show up. Therefore, to make the proper slope design, the experiments and analysis of variation of saturation layer is needed.

  • The shaking table tests were conducted on two small-scale models (Model 1 and Model 2) to examine the earthquake-induced damage of a concrete gravity dam, which has been planned for the construction with the recommendation of the peak ground acceleration of the maximum credible earthquake of 0.42 g. This study deals with the numerical simulation of shaking table tests for two smallscale dam models. The plastic damage constitutive model is used to simulate the crack/damage behavior of the bentonite-concrete mixture material. The numerical results of the maximum failure acceleration and the crack/damage propagation are compared with experimental results. Numerical results of Model 1 showed similar crack/damage propagation pattern with experimental results, while for Model 2 the similar pattern was obtained by considering the modulus of elasticity of the first and second natural frequencies. The crack/damage initiated at the changing point in the downstream side and then propagated toward the upstream side. Crack/damage accumulation occurred in the neck area at acceleration amplitudes of around 0.55 g~0.60 g and 0.65 g~0.675 g for Model 1 and Model 2, respectively.

  • In general, ground surface strengthening such as using geotextile is needed to secure trafficability of construction equipment. There are many researches for mechanical beha-vior of very soft ground covered with geotextile, however, most of them are under the condition to fix geotextile completely. In this study, numerical analyses were carried out to figure out the effects of restricting conditions of geotextile on bearing mechanism of very soft ground covered with geotextile. In numerical analyses, joint elements were used to figure out the friction properties between ground and geotextile. The results of numerical analyses were compared with the results of model test. In conclusion, the effects of restricting conditions of geotextile on bearing mechanism of very soft ground covered with geotextile became clear.

  • Recently, there has been significant interest in structural health monitoring for civil engineering applications. In this research, a specially designed tendon, proposed by embedding FBG sensors into the center king cable of a 7-wire strand tendon, was applied for long-term health monitoring of tensile forces on a ground anchor. To make temperature independent sensors, the effective temperature compensation of FBG sensors must be considered. The temperature sensitivity coefficient ${\beta}^{\prime}$ of the FBG sensors embedded tendon was successfully determined to be $2.0{\times}10^{-5}^{\circ}C^{-1}$ through calibrated tests in both a model rock body and a laboratory heat chamber. Furthermore, the obtained result for ${\beta}^{\prime}$ was formally verified through the ground temperature measurement test, expectedly. As a result, the ground temperature measured by a thermometer showed good agreement compared to that measured by the proposed FBG sensor, which was calibrated considering to the temperature sensitivity coefficient ${\beta}^{\prime}$. Finally, four prototype ground anchors including two tension ground anchors and two compression ground anchors made by replacing a tendon with the proposed smart tendon were installed into an actual slope at the Yeosu site. Tensile forces, after temperature compensation was taken into account using the verified temperature sensitivity coefficient ${\beta}^{\prime}$ and ground temperature obtained from the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA) have been monitored for over one year, and the results were very consistent to those measured from the load cell, interestingly.

  • A series of shaking table tests were conducted to estimate the seismic performance of soft ground deposits improved by stone column. The amplification of acceleration, shear strain, and shear wave velocity were evaluated to compare the seismic response of unimproved ground deposits with that of improved ground deposits. From the test results, it was shown that the stone column can prevent large shear deformation in ground deposits. However, it was also found that the acceleration of improved ground deposits may be amplified more than that of unimproved ground deposits when it was subjected to short periodic seismic wave. The results suggest that it is necessary to perform the ground response analysis with model experiments for both unimproved and improved ground deposits to evaluate the effect of stone column on the seismic performance of improved ground deposits.
