  • Excavation usually induces considerable ground settlement in soft ground, which may result in damage of adjacent buildings. Generally, the settlement is predicted through elastic-plastic finite element method and empirical method with defects. In this paper, an analytical solution for predicting ground settlement induced by excavation is developed based on the definition of three basic modes of wall displacement: T mode, R mode and P model. A separation variable method is employed to solve the problem based on elastic theory. The solution is validated by comparing the results from the analytical method with the results from finite element method(FEM) and existing measured data. Good agreement is obtained. The results show that T mode and R mode will result in a downward-sloping ground settlement profile. The P mode will result in a concave-type ground settlement profile.

  • Ground radiation antenna in mobile devices is becoming an issue for satisfying both miniaturization and high performance. Ground radiation antenna controls the characteristic mode of the ground plane and couples this mode with the ground radiation antenna, thereby having good radiation performance. In this paper, the characteristic mode theory and applications of ground radiation antenna will be introduced. The operating mechanism of single band, wideband and dual-band ground radiation antennas are studied.

  • This study reviews the common-mode noise model of indirect-contact ECG measurement which uses capacitive electrode and capacitive ground, and shows the reason of the large common-mode noise in indirect-contact ECG. And then, this study shows driven-right-leg ground in indirect-contact ECG measurement, and reviews how the driven-right-leg ground reduces the common-mode noise. This study then analyzes the relation between the effective area of the indirect-contact ground and the gain of the driven-right-leg circuit. This study introduces the output voltage saturation of the driven-right-leg circuit, which occurs frequently in indirect-contact ECG measurement with the condition of the high ground impedance. This study then shows the effect of the driven-right-leg circuit saturation on the common-mode noise.

  • As one of YHF digital data link technologies, VDL Mode 2 is designed to be an air-to-ground subnetwork of the Aeronautical Telecommunication Network (ATN) based on the Open System Interconnection (OSI) architecture. VDL Mode 2 can be used in ATS Applications especially for CPDLC and ADS. And it is also expected to replace ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System) which has broadly been used in AOC for over 20 years. This paper presents the design result of VDL Mode 2 system under AOA (ACARS Over AVLC) environment for the implementation of bit-oriented ATS applications. The system is composed of airborne and ground subsystem. Airborne subsystem consists of VDR, CMU and an aircraft test equipment with CPDLC/ADS client applications for operational test and ground system consists of Ground Station which includes ground VDR and ground communication controller, simple DSP (Datalink Service Processor) and a ground test equipment with CPDLC/ADS server applications.

  • Digital harmonics, which may reduce the radio frequency sensitivity of a system, can be coupled with an antenna in a mobile handset. This letter presents a decoupling method for increasing the isolation between digital harmonics on a flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) and an antenna in terms of the ground mode current and the concept of reaction. We model the signal and ground lines in an FPCB as a loop circuit exciting a ground mode current and demonstrate a simple but efficient decoupling method for reducing the excited ground mode current.

  • In this paper, we introduce a ground radiation antenna that uses controlled endless metal rim modes. In the proposed technique, the metal rim mode is tuned and excited as a one-wavelength radiator by a small ground radiation antenna. The proposed antenna occupies a clearance of $1mm{\times}4mm$ in a $30mm{\times}20mm$ ground plane. A metal rim with dimensions of $34mm{\times}24mm$ surrounds the ground plane, and the metal rim is separated from the ground plane by a gap of 2 mm. In addition, a lumped capacitor is inserted between the metal rim and the ground plane to control the characteristic mode of the metal rim such that the resonance of the metal rim is tuned to be equal to the operating frequency. By performing simulations and measurements, we compare the performance of the proposed antenna with that of a reference antenna that does not have an inserted capacitor between the metal rim and the ground plane. The results show that a significant improvement of the radiation performance is obtained by employing the proposed technique.

  • In this paper, we analyze the degradation of receiving sensitivity due to the coupling between digital noise and mobile handset antenna using characteristic mode. First, we analyze the coupling mechanism between the antenna and digital noise, and analyze the role of the decoupling capacitor of the ground signal line, which is one of the ways to improve the antenna receiving sensitivity degradation due to camera noise. For the analysis, the digital signal line and the ground line of the FPCB of the camera module are modeled as a loop type feeder that excites the characteristic mode of the PCB ground, and improved model which has a ground line with a capacitor are analyzed.

  • In this study, optimum locations for a loop-type ground radiation antenna are evaluated for C-shaped ground planes of two different sizes. To achieve good radiation performance, the antenna needs to be located such that it couples with the dominant current mode of the ground plane. Antenna locations are proposed using the characteristic mode analysis of the ground planes. The measured bandwidths of the antennas at the proposed locations have more than twice the bandwidths of the cases in which the antennas are coupled with non-dominant modes. The operating frequency of the antennas is 2.45 GHz.

  • Structural ceramics such as $Al_2O_3$, SIC, and $Si_3N_4$ are difficult to grind materials because of their high hardness and brittleness. They are normally ground in brittle mode, but it is possible to be ground in ductile mode depending upon the grinding conditions. In this paper an experimental investigation has been carried out to see the relationship between the grinding energy and grinding mode. It has been found that the ductile mode grinding consumes more grinding energy than the brittle mode grinding. Thus, the grinding conditions of the higher specific grinding energy leads to the plastic deformation in the ground surface of workpiece and results in the better surface finish.

  • This paper investigates the ground reflection effect on the channel capacity of an orbital angular momentum (OAM) multi-mode transmission system that uses uniform circular array (UCA) antennas. The ground-reflected signals cause inter-mode interferences between the OAM modes, and lead to system performance degradation. The OAM multi-mode channel capacity severely degrades owing to the ground reflection as the transmission distance increases. Increasing the UCA height above the ground and using highly directive array elements can mitigate the ground reflection effect and increase the channel capacity.
