COMS(Chollian) satellite which was launched on June 26, 2010 has three payloads for Ka-band communications, geostationary ocean color imaging and meteorological imaging. In order to make efficient use of the geostationary satellite, a concept of mission operations has been considered from the beginning of the satellite ground control system development. COMS satellite mission operations are classified by daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal operations. Daily satellite operations include mission planning, command planning and transmission, telemetry processing and analysis, ranging and orbit determination, ephemeris and event prediction, and wheel off-loading set point parameter calculation. As a weekly operation, North-South station keeping maneuver and East-West station keeping maneuver should be performed on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively. Spacecraft oscillator updating parameter should be calculated and uploaded once a month. Eclipse operations should be performed during a vernal equinox and autumnal equinox season. In this paper, operational validations of the major functions in COMS SGCS are presented for the first three month of in-orbit test operations. All of the major functions have been successfully verified and the COMS SGCS will be used for the mission operations of the COMS satellite for 7 years of mission life time and even more.
The primary innovation in the new footwear is a heel lift of $20^{\circ}$ which is proposed to improve posture and balance as well as increase shock absorption. The purpose of this research was to compare the movement, forces and muscle activity between the new shoes and standard athletic footwear during standing and walking. Nine healthy subjects participated in this study. Data were collected at two times: 1) when the subjects first wore the new walking shoes and 2) after the subjects wore the shoes for 6 hours a day for two weeks. 1. During standing. the movement of the center of pressure is increased approximately 60% when wearing the new walking shoes compared to a control shoe. 2. During walking. the ankle is approximately $14^{\circ}$ more dorsiflexed during landing due to the 200heel lift in the new walking shoes. The knee compensates slightly by flexing approximately $2^{\circ}$ more. 3. As a result of the changes in the walking movement, the ground reaction forces are applied more quickly, although the peak magnitudes do rut change. 4. The resultant joint moments at the ankle and knee joints decrease from 21-60% with the largest reductions occurring during landing. In conclusion, the new footwear change the movement, showing a more upright stance. Also, the new footwear reduce joint loading at the joint during the landing and weight acceptance phase of walking. However, the influence of the new footwear is immediate and does rut change after wearing the shoes for two weeks.
The aim of this study was to describe the NO$_3$ leaching in grassland ecosy-stems. Field study was performed in the southwestern district of Germany from 1991 to 1993. The study included 3 different slurry application, conventional slurry application, 50% reduced slurry application and without slurry application. On each plot were installed 3 ceramic cups at 120cm depth. Samples were collected twice a month and analysed for NO$_3$ colorimetrically using a Tecator Auto-Analyzer. Percolation was calculated as the difference between precipitation and potential evapotranspiration. The NO$_3$ concentration in soil water was remarkably variable during the year. The average NO$_3$ concentration during the experiment was the lowest (8.5mg/l) without slurry application and the highest with 240kg N/ha cattle slurry (25.3mg/l). the NO$_3$-N leached per year were respectively 29, 23, and 12kg/ha in case of 240, 120 and 0kg N/ha when cattle slurry was applied. The conventional feeding density of cattle husbandry in the district caused the NO$_3$ contamination in ground water. When the amount of cattle slurry applied was reduced to 50%, the NO$_3$ loading in ground water was reduced greatly. Therefore, the reduction policy of cattle slurry can positively contribute to the prevention of the NO$_3$-contamination in groundwater.

Recently in Korea, the policy is being proceeded to build a intergenerational housing on artificial ground of railroad site for utilizing rental house. Due to narrow space of rail road site, suitable method have to be developed such as micropiles which is known as a method of a fast construction. However, If micropile is used as foundations for the super structure, construction cost is increases compared with other pile. Consequently, new concept micropile proposed to improve both bearing capacity and cost efficiency of general micropile. New concept micropile consists of waveform cement grout surrounding tread bar that formed by grouting the soil layer with jet grouting method as control the grout pressure and flow. The micropile with waveform is expected to decrease the construction cost by cut down pile length of general micropile. This paper examined the behavior of the new concept micropile with waveform subjected to axial load using two-dimensional axisymmetric numerical analyses method. According to the numerical result, there will cost effectiveness as the pile displacement decreased despite the length of waveform micropile is down about 5% from a general micropile under the same loading condition. Also, the effect of skin friction force which mobilized from the waveform of micropile appeared at relatively soft ground.
Suction drain method can directly apply vacuum pressure to the soft ground through vertical drains so it can make hardening zones around them. These hardening zones make steeply lower the discharge efficiency of the pore water with decreasing permeability. This paper considered a stepped vacuum pressure to minimize a hardening zone which is one of the important parameters that can decrease discharge efficiency. A series of laboratory tests were conducted in order to examine the effect of the hardening zones and to evaluate their effects to the ground improvements with varying durations which applied stepped vacuum pressures(-20kPa, -40kPa, -60kPa and -80kPa) with Busan marine clay. According to strength(CPT), water content test and theoretical investigation indicate a size of the hardening zone within 7cm and the decreasing ratio of permeability about 2.0~4.0. Also, the total settlements are larger for the stepped vacuum pressure than the instant vacuum loading. The application time with vacuum pressure is determined considering the geotechnical properties of the interested clays. Results of numerical analysis show that consolidation behavior is appropriate to measurement for considering hardening zones.
In this paper bearing capacity and safety margin of shallow foundation on weathered soil ground against shear failure by using current design method of allowable stress design (ASD), load resistance factor design (LRFD) based on reliability analysis and partial safety factor design (PSFD) in Eurocode were estimated and compared to each other. Results of the plate loading test used in construction and design were collected and analysis of probability statistics on soil parameters affecting the bearing capacity of shallow foundation was performed to quantify the uncertainty of them and to investigate the resistance bias factor and covalence of ultimate bearing capacity. For the typical sections of shallow foundation in domestic field as examples, reliability index was obtained by reliability analysis (FORM) and the sensitivity analysis on soil parameters of probability variables was performed to investigate the effect of probability variable on shear failure. From stability analysis for these sections by ASD, LRFD with the target reiability index corresponding to the safety factor used in ASD and PSDF, safety margins were estimated respectively and compared.

Incheon Bridge, 18.4 km long sea-crossing bridge, will be opened to the traffic in October 2009 and this will be the new landmark of the gearing up north-east Asia as well as the largest & longest bridge of Korea. Incheon Bridge is the integrated set of several special featured bridges including a magnificent cable-stayed girder bridge which has a main span of 800 m width to cross the navigation channel in and out of the Port of Incheon. Incheon Bridge is making an epoch of long-span bridge designs thanks to the fully application of the AASHTO LRFD (load & resistance factor design) to both the superstructures and the substructures. A state-of-the-art of the geotechnologies which were applied to the Incheon Bridge construction project is introduced. The most Large-diameter drilled shafts were penetrated into the bedrock to support the colossal superstructures. The bearing capacity and deformational characteristics of the foundations were verified through the world's largest static pile load test. 8 full-scale pilot piles were tested in both offshore site and onshore area prior to the commencement of constructions. Compressible load beyond 30,000 tonf pressed a single 3 m diameter foundation pile by means of bi-directional loading method including the Osterberg cell techniques. Detailed site investigation to characterize the subsurface properties had been carried out. Geotextile tubes, tied sheet pile walls, and trestles were utilized to overcome the very large tidal difference between ebb and flow at the foreshore site. 44 circular-cell type dolphins surround the piers near the navigation channel to protect the bridge against the collision with aberrant vessels. Each dolphin structure consists of the flat sheet piled wall and infilled aggregates to absorb the collision impact. Geo-centrifugal tests were performed to evaluate the behavior of the dolphin in the seabed and to verify the numerical model for the design. Rip-rap embankments on the seabed are expected to prevent the scouring of the foundation. Prefabricated vertical drains, sand compaction piles, deep cement mixings, horizontal natural-fiber drains, and other subsidiary methods were used to improve the soft ground for the site of abutments, toll plazas, and access roads. Light-weight backfill using EPS blocks helps to reduce the earth pressure behind the abutment on the soft ground. Some kinds of reinforced earth like as MSE using geosynthetics were utilized for the ring wall of the abutment. Soil steel bridges made of corrugated steel plates and engineered backfills were constructed for the open-cut tunnel and the culvert. Diverse experiences of advanced designs and constructions from the Incheon Bridge project have been propagated by relevant engineers and it is strongly expected that significant achievements in geotechnical engineering through this project will contribute to the national development of the longspan bridge technologies remarkably.
While constructing multistorey buildings with reinforced concrete framed structures it is a common practice to provide parking space for vehicles at the ground floor level. This floor will generally consist of open frames without any infilled walls and is called an open-storey. From a post disaster damage survey carried out, it was noticed that during the January 26, 2001 Bhuj (Gujarat, India) earthquake, a large number of reinforced concrete framed buildings with open-storey at ground floor level, suffered extensive damage and in some cases catastrophic collapse. This has brought into sharp focus the need to carry out systematic studies on the seismic vulnerability of such buildings. Determination of vulnerability requires realistic structural response estimations taking into account the stochasticity in the loading and the system parameters. The stochastic finite element method can be effectively used to model the random fields while carrying out such studies. This paper presents the details of stochastic finite element analysis of a five-storey three-bay reinforced concrete framed structure with open-storey subjected to standard seismic excitation. In the present study, only the stochasticity in the system parameters is considered. The stochastic finite element method used for carrying out the analysis is based on perturbation technique. Each random field representing the stochastic geometry/material property is discretised into correlated random variables using spatial averaging technique. The uncertainties in geometry and material properties are modelled using the first two moments of the corresponding parameters. In evaluating the stochastic response, the cross-sectional area and Young' modulus are considered as independent random fields. To study the influence of correlation length of random fields, different correlation lengths are considered for random field discretisation. The spatial expectations and covariances for displacement response at any time instant are obtained as the output. The effect of open-storey is modelled by suitably considering the stiffness of infilled walls in the upper storey using cross bracing. In order to account for changes in soil conditions during strong motion earthquakes, both fixed and hinged supports are considered. The results of the stochastic finite element based seismic analysis of reinforced concrete framed structures reported in this paper demonstrate the importance of considering the effect of open-storey with appropriate support conditions to estimate the realistic response of buildings subjected to earthquakes.

A probabilistic fragility assessment procedure is developed in this paper to predict risks of damage arising from seismic loading to the two-cell RC box tunnel. Especially, the paper focuses on establishing a simplified methodology to derive fragility curves which are an indispensable ingredient of seismic fragility assessment. In consideration of soil-structure interaction (SSI) effect, the ground response acceleration method for buried structure (GRAMBS) is used in the proposed approach to estimate the dynamic response behavior of the structures. In addition, the damage states of tunnels are identified by conducting the pushover analyses and Latin Hypercube sampling (LHS) technique is employed to consider the uncertainties associated with design variables. To illustrate the concepts described, a numerical analysis is conducted and fragility curves are developed for a large set of artificially generated ground motions satisfying a design spectrum. The seismic fragility curves are represented by two-parameter lognormal distribution function and its two parameters, namely the median and log-standard deviation, are estimated using the maximum likelihood estimates (MLE) method.
One-dimensional equivalent linear site response analysis is widely used in practice due to its simplicity, requiring only few input parameters, and low computational cost. The main limitation of the procedure is that it is essentially a linear method, in which the time dependent change in the soil properties cannot be modeled and constant values of shear modulus and damping is used throughout the duration of the analysis. Various forms of modified equivalent linear analyses have been developed to enhance the accuracy of the equivalent linear method by incorporating the dependence of the shear strain with the loading frequency. The methods are identical in that it uses the shear strain Fourier spectrum as the backbone of the analysis, but differ in the method in which the strain Fourier spectrum is smoothed. This study used two domestically measured soil profiles to perform a series of nonlinear, equivalent linear, and modified equivalent linear site response analyses to verify the accuracy of two modified procedures. The results of the analyses indicate that the modified equivalent linear analysis can highly overestimate the amplification of the high frequency components of the ground motion. The degree of overestimation is dependent on the characteristics of the input ground motion. Use of a motion rich in high frequency contents can result in unrealistic response.
