Due to icing and snow, power transmission lines have asymmetric cross sections, and their motion becomes unstable. At this time, the vibration caused by the wind is called galloping. If galloping is continuous, short circuits or ground faults may occur. It is possible to prevent galloping by installing spacers between transmission lines. In this study, the transmission line is modeled as a mass-spring-damper system by using RecurDyn. To analyze the dynamic behavior of the transmission line, the damping coefficient is derived from the free vibration test of the transmission line and Rayleigh damping theory. The drag and lift coefficient for modeling the wind load are calculated from the flow analysis by using ANSYS Fluent. Galloping simulations according to spacer stiffness and interval are carried out. It is found that when the stiffness is 100 N/m and the interval around the support is dense, the galloping phenomenon is reduced the most.

Nowadays, a DC microgrid that can link various distributed power sources is gaining much attention. Accordingly, research on fault situations, such as line-to-line and line-to-ground faults of the DC microgrid, has been conducted to improve grid reliability. However, the blackout of an AC system and the oscillation of a DC bus voltage have not been reported or have not been sufficiently verified by previous research. In this study, a 20 kW DC microgrid testbed using a power HIL simulation technique is proposed. This testbed can simulate various fault conditions without any additional grid facilities and dangerous experiments. It includes the blackout of the DC microgrid caused by the AC utility grid's blackout, a drastic load increment, and the DC bus voltage oscillation caused by the LCL filter of the voltage source converter. The effectiveness of the proposed testbed is verified by using Opal-RT's OP5707 real-time simulator with a 3 kW prototype three-port dual-active-bridge converter.

During tunnel construction, ground failures often occur due to existence of weak zones, such as faults, joints, and cavities, ahead of tunnel face. It is hard to detect effectively weak zones, which can lead underground structure to fail after excavation and before supporting, by using conventional characterization methods. In this study, an enhanced analytical method of predicting weak zones ahead of tunnel face is developed to overcome some problems in the conventional geophysical exploration methods. The analytical method is based on Coulomb's and Gauss' laws with considering the characteristics of electric fields subjected to rock mass. Using the developed method, closed form solutions are obtained to detect a spherical shaped zone and an oriented fault ahead of tunnel face respectively. The analytical results suggest that the presence of weak zones and their sizes, location, and states can be accurately predicted by combining a proper inversion process with resistance measured from several electrodes on the tunnel face. It appears that the skin depth or resistivity in rock mass is affected by the diameter of tunnel face, natural electric potential and noises induced by experimental measurement and spatial distribution of uncertain properties. The developed analytical solution is verified through experimental tests. About 1800 concrete blocks of 5cm by 5cm by 5cm in size are prepared and used to model a joint rock mass around tunnel face. Weak zones are simulated ahead of tunnel face with a material which has relatively higher conductivity than concrete blocks. Experimental results on the model test show a good agreement with analytical results.
The characteristics of vertical to horizontal ratio of response spectrum from 20 recent earthquakes were analysed. Response spectrum of 260 horizontal and 130 vertical ground motions were normalized by peak ground acceleration at each resonance frequency from 0.1 to 50Hz. It has been identified that the ratio of vertical to horizontal response spectrum has strong dependancy on epicentral distance and resonance frequency. The ratio of vertical to horizontal response spectrum for the 0-50km epicentral distance group are larger than 2/3 values, which is a standard engineering rule-of-thumb V/H=2/3, at resonance frequency above 7-8Hz. All the 3 groups such as 50-100, 100-150- and 150-200km epicentral distance have shown larger values of vertical to horizontal ratio than 2/3 at resonance frequency above 15Hz and also are larger than 2/3 at resonance frequency below 8-10Hz. Even though there are differences in specific resonance frequency values which depend on the epicentral distance group, we should be careful of seismic design of vertical component of the structures winch are located within the range of about 200km distance. form the potentially seismic causative faults.
Measurements on subsurface movement of the Songsanri tomb site including the Muryong royal tomb was conducted using a tiltmeter system for the period of 15 months form July 7, 1996 to September 30, 1997. Two coordinate tilt monitoring data shows the biggest movement rate of 2.3mm/m/yr toward south in the frontal wall(N-S tilt) of the Muryong royal tomb. Southward tilting of bricks above the southern fire place in the western wall of the Muryong royal tomb is a proof of southward tilting of the royal tomb since its excavation in 1971. The eastern wall of the Muryong royal tomb is also tilting toward inside the tomb with the rate of 1.523mm/m/yr. Furthermore, tilting rate of wall increases twice in rainy season. It is interpreted tbat infiltration of water into the tomb and nearby ground in rainy season results in dangerous status for the safety of tomb structure. On the whole, normal component tilting of the walls of the 5th tomb is large than its shear component. It shows a small displacement toward one direction without no abrupt change in its direction and amount of tilting. The tilting rate of walls of the 6th tomb is about 8.8mm/m/yr in the dry season which is much bigger than those of other tombs in rainy season. Deformation events of walls of the tombs are closely related to amount of precipitation and variation of temperature. In comparison with different weather conditions, tilting is much bigger during the period of rainy weather than sunny weather. It is interpreted that rainwater flew into the turm through faults and nearby ground. High water content in nearby ground resulted strength of ground. The tilting event of walls shows a hysterisis phenomenon in analysis of temperature effect on tilting event. The walls tilt rapidly with steep rising of temperature, but the tilted walls do not come back to original position with temperature falling. Therefore, a factor of steep increase of the temperature must be removed. It means the tomb have to be kept with constant temperature. The observation of groundwater level using three boreholes located in construction site and original ground represented that groundwater level in construction site is higher than that of original ground during the rainy season from the end of June to August. It means that the drainage system of the Muryong royal tomb is worse than original ground, and it is interpreted that the poor drainage system is related to safety of tomb structure. As above mentioned, it is interpreted that artificial changes of the tomb environment since the excavation, infiltration of rainwater and groundwater into the tomb site and poor drainage system had resulted in dangerous situation for the tomb structure. According to the result of the long period observation for the tomb site, it is interpreted that protection of the tomb site from high water content should be carried out at first, and the rise of temperature by means of the dehumidifier inside the tomb must be removed.
This study constructed a 3D geological model for Uggi Nuur Fe-Mn mineralization zone in Mongolia, and the 3D geological distribution is cross-analyzed with magnetic anomaly distribution to figure out relationship between ore zone and subsurface geology. As a result of 4 step 3D modeling procedures including geological cross section, surface modeling, foliation modeling and solid modeling, the geology of the both study area is bordered by faults in NW direction with Munguntessj formation being located in the west side of the fault while Yashill formation is located on the other side of the fault. Moreover, the strike direction of foliation in the both formation shows same directional pattern with the NW faults. The magnetic anomaly distribution reveals that higher anomaly values are concentrated to near the ground surface. The analyses of 3 dimensional distribution between subsurface geology and magnetic anomaly indicates that higher anomaly is mainly distributed over the Munguntessj formation as a elongated lens bodies whereas the magnetic anomaly is evenly found in the both of Munguntessj formation and Yashill formation in the study area 2. It infers that volcanic activities associated mineralization occurred during silurian period, and the mineralized zone is thought to be realigned along the geological structures caused by later stage tectonic activities.
As can be seen in many earthquakes, liquefaction causes differential settlement, which sometimes produces serious damages such as building destruction and ground subsidence. There are many possible active faults near the Busan city and the Yangsan, Dongrae, and Ilgwang faults among them pass through the city. The Busan city is also located within the influence of recent earthquakes, which occurred in the Gyeongju, Pohang, and Kumamoto (Japan). Along the wide fault valleys in the city, the Quaternary unconsolidated alluvial sediments are thickly accumulated, and the reclaimed lands with beach sediments are widely distributed in the coastal area. A large earthquake near or in the Busan city is thus expected to cause major damage due to liquefaction in urban areas. This study conducted an assessment of the liquefaction hazard according to seismic recurrence intervals across the Busan city. As a result, although there are slight differences in degree depending on seismic recurrence intervals, it is predicted that the liquefaction potential is very high in the areas of the Nakdonggang Estuary, Busan Bay, Suyeong Bay, and Songjeong Station. In addition, it is shown that the shorter the seismic recurrence interval, the greater difference the liquefaction potential depending on site periods.
Groundwater in crystalline basement is controlled primarily by tectonic fractures. It is evident that the delineation of the heavily faulted area and/or fractures deeply developped should be considerable value in deep-seated low enthalphy geothermal water. Electrical and electromagnetic methods have effectively been employed to map hydraulic faults and shear zones for groundwater exploration. In this study VLi; dipoledipole resistivity, controlled source audio~frequency magneto-telluric(CSAMT) and magnetic methods were applied in the Bomun resort area, adjacent to Kyongju city, southeastern part of Korea. The integrated geophysical tools employed in this experiment can be manifested themselves as: 1. Magnetic high for granite intrusions which is more favorable for geothermal gradient increase in depth. 2. VLF cross-over trends for mapping linear shallow conductive fractures and shear zones. 3. Dipole-dipole resistivity distributions for the deep-seated(less than 500m in depth) fractures and shear zones. The dipole-dipole resistivity field data were inverted to the true resistivity distribution with two-dimensional automatic inversion program based on the finite-difference method. 4. CSAMT provides an efficient way of delineating fractures and fault zones if the depth is greater than about 500m.

Power system fault analysis is commonly based on well-known symmetrical component method, which describes power system elements by positive, negative and zero sequence impedance. In case of balanced fault, such as three phase short circuit, transmission line can be represented by positive sequence impedance only. The majority of fault in transmission lines, however, is unbalanced fault, such as line-to-ground faults, so that both positive and zero sequence impedance is required for fault analysis. When unbalanced fault occurs, zero sequence current flows through earth and skywires in overhead transmission systems and through cable sheaths and earth in cable transmission systems. Since zero sequence current distribution between cable sheath and earth is dependent on both sheath bondings and grounding configurations, care must be taken to calculate zero sequence impedance of underground cable transmission lines. In this paper, conventional and EMTP-based sequence impedance calculation methods were described and applied to 345kV cable transmission systems (4 circuit, OF 2000mm2). Calculation results showed that detailed circuit analysis is desirable to avoid possible errors of sequence impedance calculation resulted from various configuration of cable sheath bonding and grounding in underground cable transmission systems.
