  • In this study, effects of pore structure of ground granulated blast-furnace slag concrete on freezing-thawing resistance are reviewed. As a result, degradation of freezing-thawing resistance performance was occurred as replacement ratio of ground granulated blast-furnace slag increases under same specified concrete strength condition. It is considered that pore structure of internal binder affects freezing-thawing resistance performance.

  • The low slump mortar grouting is widely used in reinforcement of structural foundation and ground improvement in soft ground. It also has merit that construction is possible in insufficient space. In this study, the main purpose is to evaluate effects for contiguous structures that can be happened along with soft ground improvement by the low slump mortar grouting. To estimate these effects, numerical analysis using finite difference method was applied. It was performed to analyze settlement, upheaval and horizontal displacement of surrounding ground and to measure horizontal stress variation by the first and the second grouting in the pile foundation.

  • This article presents an investigation of the effects on a grounding system of wireless power transfer (WPT) when transmitting over relatively far distances, that is, up to 1.25 m. Conventional two-coil WPT systems are sufficiently commercialized in strong coupling range, but it is important to accomplish the long-range WPT in weak coupling range for further various applications. This system depends on the coupling effect between the two coils that the grounds of the transmitting and receiving coils should be completely separated. However, when evaluating the performance of two-coil systems with the instrument consisting of two ports and one common ground, undesirable problems occur in weak coupling ranges, for example, obtaining disagreeable transmission efficiency and degrading system stability/reliability. We investigate the problems of the leakage power from common ground systems and provide a practical solution to obtain a reliable WPT system by using an isolation transformer. The usefulness of this approach is that it is possible to achieve the stability of the system with relatively far transmitting distances and to determine the exact transmission efficiency.

  • The stochastic point-source model has been widely used in generating artificial ground motions, which can be used to develop a ground motion prediction equation and to evaluate the seismic risk of structures. This model mainly consists of three different functions representing source, path, and site effects. The path effect is used to emulate decay in ground motion in accordance with distance from the source. In the stochastic point-source model, the path attenuation effect is taken into account by using the geometrical attenuation effect and the inelastic attenuation effect. The aim of this study is to develop accurate equations of ground motion attenuation in the Korean peninsula. In this study, attenuation was estimated and validated by using a stochastic point source model and observed ground motion recordings for the Korean peninsula.

  • This paper focuses on the stochastic response analysis of industrial masonry chimneys to surface blast-induced random ground motions by using a three dimensional finite element model. Underground blasts induce ground shocks on nearby structures. Depending on the distance between the explosion centre and the structure, masonry structures will be subjected to ground motions due to the surface explosions. Blast-induced random ground motions can be defined in terms of the power spectral density function and applied to each support point of the 3D finite element model of the industrial masonry system. In this paper, mainly a parametric study is conducted to estimate the effect of the blast-induced ground motions on the stochastic response of a chimney type masonry structure. With this purpose, different values of charge weight and distance from the charge centre are considered for the analyses of the chimney. The results of the study underline the remarkable effect of the surface blast-induced ground motions on the stochastic behaviour of industrial masonry type chimneys.

  • The ground deformation due to the tunnel excavation is dependent on various factors such as ground condition, geometry of the tunnel, excavation method, installation of support members, construction condition of each excavation stage, etc. And the distance from the facing effects significantly the stress conditions of the supported and unsupported ground due to the 3-dimensional structural nature of the excavated tunnel. The concept of ground characteristic line has been applied to properly consider the loading condition given by staged tunnel excavation so that the imaginary supporting pressure is applied against the surface of excavated ground. Discussions on the results of the performed finite element analysis were mainly made with respect to the ground settlement, tunnel displacement, earth pressure, stress mobilized in supporting members.

  • Response of tall buildings to near-field ground motions with distinct low-frequency pulses can differ dramatically from, for example, the response to the 1940 El Centro ground motion. For the same peak ground acceleration (PGA) and duration of shaking, ground motions with a pulse-like characteristic can generate much higher base shear, inter-story drifts and roof displacement in a high-rise building as compared to ground motions without the characteristic pulse. Also, the ductility demand is much higher and the effectiveness of supplemental damping is lower for pulse-like ground motions. This paper presents a simple interpretation of the response characteristics for two recorded and one synthetic near-field pulse-like ground motions.

  • In this paper, when structures are constructed in the soft ground with poor bearing capacity at Incheon International Airport(railroad area), as for the grouting columns built In soft ground by high pressure jet grouting with Triple tube rod(super injection grouting), the effects on reinforcement and bearing capacity of ground are investigated. A unconfined compressive strength tests has been performed on the specimens sampled from the grouting columns and a mass plate bearing test has been performed on a grouting column. The test results show that super injection grouting has a sufficient effect on composite ground improved of foundation ground and reatraint of settlement of structure.

  • This paper investigates the effects of sports ground materials on the transfer characteristics of the landing impact force using a coupled foot-shoe-ground interaction model. The impact force resulting from the collision between the sports shoe and the ground is partially dissipated, but the remaining portion transfers to the human body via the lower extremity. However, since the landing impact force is strongly influenced by the sports ground material we consider four different sports grounds, asphalt, urethane, clay and wood. We use a fully coupled 3-D foot-shoe-ground interaction model and we construct the multi-layered composite ground models. Through the numerical simulation, the landing impact characteristics such as the ground reaction force (GRF), the acceleration transfer and the frequency response characteristics are investigated for four different sports grounds. It was found that the risk of injury, associated with the landing impact, was reduced as the ground material changes from asphalt to wood, from the fact that both the peak vertical acceleration and the central frequency monotonically decrease from asphalt to wood. As well, it was found that most of the impact acceleration and frequency was dissipated at the heel, then not much changed from the ankle to the knee.
