  • Two dimensional turbulent flow simulations on the low Mach number - high Reynolds number flow about the NACA 4412 airfoil are carried out as the airfoil approaches a ground. It has been turned out that angle of attack between 2 and 8 is recommended for the airfoil to utilize the benefit of ground effect. For the large angle of attack, the increment of lift due to the ground effect is eliminated and negative aerodynamic effect such as destabilizing aspect in static longitudinal stability are occurred as the airfoil approaches a ground.

  • This paper focuses on the impact of the wave passage effect on the long-span bridge. In order to make the wave passage effect more obvious, ground motion samples are selected from the near-fault ground motion of the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake and an arch bridge with a 280m main span is selected as a bridge sample. The motion ground samples are divided into two groups according to the characteristics of near-fault. A sequence of fragility curves is developed. It is shown that the seismic damage is increased by the wave passage effect and the increase is more obvious in the near-fault ground motion.

  • Ground effect includes a reduction of induced drag, increase of lift, and nose-down moment during landing. These phenomena, occurring late in the landing maneuver, are considered to be of little significance because they tend to counteract and/or compensate in this respect. Even though it is unlikely to affect any flare profile variations appreciably, some pilots have reversed perception about such phenomenon and overestimate during landing. It is becoming a negative factor and is making an adverse effect on landing maneuver. This study examines the perception of ground effect of large aircraft pilots, reviews literature regarding ground effect, and makes suggestions that pilots can correctly recognize and respond to the effect during landing flare maneuvers.

  • In this paper, an iterative boundary element method (IBEM) was proposed to solve for a wing-in-ground (WIG) effect. IBEM is a fast and accurate method used in many different fields of engineering and in this work; it is applied to a fluid flow problem assessing a wing in ground proximity. The theory and the developed code are validated first with other methods and the obtained results with the proposed method are found to be encouraging. Then, time consumptions of the direct and iterative methods were contrasted to evaluate the efficiency of IBEM. It is found out that IBEM dominates direct BEM in terms of time consumption in all trials. The iterative method seems very useful for quick assessment of a wing in ground proximity condition. After all, a NACA6409 wing section in ground vicinity is solved with IBEM to evaluate the WIG effect.

  • To study the temperature mitigation effects from urban green, several arrangements of green spaces were selected and air/ground temperatures were measured in Chongju city area. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; 1. It was found that the natural ground materials effect more affirmatively on the air and ground temperature than artificial ones do. The best results were recorded from the grass surface presenting highest mitigation effect and lowest daily temperature deviation. 2. Temperature mitigation effects of Tree-Shade on ground are different from season, ground material, and crown-size. Them most effects were found in interlocking block, the least in grass surface among recorded 2 seasons and 3 materials. In case of air temperature, the effects were more or less decreased in most cases. 3. From the survey, it was confirmed that the smaller urban greens can do its role of temperature mitigation as larger ones does. In case of this study, the effect was recorded about 2.3$^{\circ}C$.

  • A numerical simulation was done to investigate the performance of thin wings in close vicinity to ground. The simulation is based on Vortex Lattice Method(VLM) and freely deforming wake elements are taken into account for a sudden acceleration case. The parameters covered in the simulation are angle of attack, aspect ratio, ground clearance, sweep angle and taper ratio. In addition, the effect of the wing endplate on the ground effect is included. The wing sections used for present computations are uncambered, cambered and S-types. The present computational results are compared with other published computational results and experimental data.

  • Numerical and experimental studies were performed to investigate the aerodynamic performance of a thin wing in close vicinity to the ground. The vortex lattice method (VLM) was utilized to simulate the wing in ground (WIG) effect, which included freely deforming wake elements. The numerical results acquired through the VLM were compared to the experimental results. The experiment entailed varying the ground clearance using the DHMTU (Department of Hydromechanics of the Marine Technical University of Saint Petersburg) wing and the WIG craft model in the wind tunnel. The aero-dynamic influence of the design parameters, such as angles of attack, aspect ratios, taper ratios, and sweep angles were studied and compared between the numerical and experimental results associated with the WIG craft. Both numerical and experimental results suggested that the endplate augments the WIG effect for a small ground clearance. In addition, the vortex lattice method simulated the wake deformation following the wing in the influence of the ground effect.

  • A ground-loop heat exchanger in a ground source heat pump system is an important unit that determines the thermal performance of a system and its initial cost. The Size and performance of this heat exchanger is highly dependent on ground thermal properties. A proper design requires certain site-specific parameters, most importantly the ground effective thermal conductivity, the borehole thermal resistance and the undisturbed ground temperature. This study was performed to investigate the effect of some parameters such as borehole lengths, various grouting materials and U-tube configurations on ground effective thermal conductivity. In this study, thermal response tests were conducted using a testing device with 9-different ground-loop heat exchangers. From the experimental results, the length of ground-loop heat exchanger affects to the effective thermal conductivity. Among the various grouting materials, the bentonite-based grout with silica sand shows the largest thermal conductivity value.

  • During a ground fault the maximum fault current and neutral to ground voltage will appear at the pole nearest to the fault. Distribution lines are consisted of three phase conductors, an overhead ground wire and a multi-grounded neutral line. In this paper phase to neutral faults were staged at the specified concrete pole along the distribution line and measured the ground fault current distribution in the ground fault current, three poles nearest to the fault point, overhead ground wire and neutral line. A effect by grounding resistance of poles of ground fault current in the 22.9[kV] multi-ground distribution system. by field tests.

  • Apartment housing block has been spreaded according to rapid economic development and urbanization in Korea. A parking lot is located at underground, artificial ground is inevitably created in apartment housing block. Artificial ground creates different thermal environment compared to natural ground, because the composition and coverage of artificial ground are diverse. In this study, the effect of the artificial ground on building thermal environment will be disscussed by simulation. Considering the result of simulation, surface albedo is more important for building energy performance. A purpose of this study is to examine how the characteristic of surface effect to thermal environment, and to develop design method for sustainable outdoor space.
