  • A comparative study on ground boundary conditions for the airfoil in ground effect has been carried out. The objective of the present study is to clarify effects of the ground boundary conditions so that it will be helpful to analyse results of wind tunnel tests using the fixed ground board or the image method. A low Mach number preconditioned Navier-Stokes solver using the overlap grid method has been applied. It has been turned out that results with the symmetric boundary condition are almost the same to those with the moving boundary condition. Results with the fixed ground boundary show discrepancy to those with the moving boundary condition when flow separation on the ground board takes place.

  • Permafrost refers to the condition where the ground is frozen. It is crucial to review and evaluate the ground's characteristics before construction. In this study, electrical resistivity surveying is chosen as the investigative technique to apply and illustrate the results on the state of permafrost ground and to summarize its applicability. Field experiments are conducted in the Yeoncheon area of South Korea, which has a freezing index of 522.6°C·days. The target area is categorized into two ground conditions: the first where the original ground freezes, and the second involves excavating the original ground up to a depth of 3 meters, backfilling it, and then artificially injecting fluid. Thus, frozen ground conditions are simulated under both natural and artificial circumstances. Electrical resistivity surveys are performed under both above-freezing and sub-zero temperature conditions, with the experiments conducted at sub-zero temperatures revealing relatively more high-resistivity zones due to the temperature conditions. In this area, the distribution of soil moisture content is also investigated using the Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) technique. It is observed that the ground into which water is artificially injected had a relatively higher moisture content, although the difference is minor. Finally, a 3D map of the target ground is constructed based on the measured electrical resistivity values, and through this, the distribution of porosity, a crucial design parameter, is also depicted. This research demonstrates that the electrical resistivity technique can effectively evaluate the state of frozen and unfrozen ground and further suggests that it can detailed extract the characteristics of the target ground.

  • In this study, a series of soil bin experiment was carried out to investigate experimentally the effect of the tire inflation pressure and axle load of tire on the steering torque for the off-road condition. The experiment was performed at the three levels of off-road conditions(ground I, ground II and ground III) and on-road condition(ground IV), four levels of tire inflation pressure(120 kPa, 170 kPa, 220 kPa and 270 kPa), and four levels of axle load(1470N, 1960N, 2450N and 2940N). The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1. Steering torque at the off-road conditions were higher than that on the on-road conditions for all levels of tire inflation pressure and axle load. 2. As the axle load increased, steering torque also increased f3r all experimental ground conditions. 3. For the axle load of 1470N the biggest steering torque was measured on the ground condition I, but as the axle load increased to the value of 2940N the biggest steering torque was measured on the ground condition III. From the above results, it was found that for the low axle load, steering torque gets higher on the soft ground condition, but for the high axle load, steering torque gets higher on hard ground condition for whole range of experimental conditions. 4. As the tire inflation pressure decreased, steering torque increased on the on-road condition, but no specific trend was not found at the off-road conditions.

  • Accurate prediction of mixed ground conditions ahead of a tunnel face is of vital importance for safe excavation using tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Previous studies have primarily focused on electrical resistivity surveys from the ground surface for geotechnical investigation. In this study, an FE (finite element) numerical model was developed to simulate electrical resistivity surveys for the prediction of risky mixed ground conditions in front of a tunnel face. The proposed FE model is validated by comparing with the apparent electrical resistivity values obtained from the analytical solution corresponding to a vertical fault on the ground surface (i.e., a simplified model). A series of parametric studies was performed with the FE model to analyze the effect of geological and sensor geometric conditions on the electrical resistivity survey. The parametric study revealed that the interface slope between two different ground formations affects the electrical resistivity measurements during TBM excavation. In addition, a large difference in electrical resistivity between two different ground formations represented the dramatic effect of the mixed ground conditions on the electrical resistivity values. The parametric studies of the electrode array showed that the proper selection of the electrode spacing and the location of the electrode array on the tunnel face of TBM is very important. Thus, it is concluded that the developed FE numerical model can successfully predict the presence of a mixed ground zone, which enables optimal management of potential risks.

  • Purpose : This study aimed to investigate the effect of differing ground contact conditions on the eletromyographic(EMG) activity in rectus femoris, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius medialis during step-up activity in patients with hemiparesis. Methods : 10 hemiparetic patients performed step-up activity on three different ground contact conditions: entire ground contact, 2/3 ground contact, 1/3 groud contact. Result : The EMG activities of gastrocnemius medialis significantly changed on 1/3 ground contact(p<.05). However, no significant changed rectus femoris, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior between three differing ground contact conditions (p>.05). Conclusion : This study provides that EMG activities of gastrocnemius medialis significantly changed on different ground contacts. Therefore, this method can be used to strengthen the gastrocnemius medialis.

  • The purpose of this paper was to investigate experimentally the steering torque characteristics of a tractor operated in various ground conditions. The experiments were conducted with the tractor reconstructed for steering torque test of the tractor at two different off-road conditions (ground-I and ground-II) and a on-road condition (ground-III), three different levels of tire inflation pressures (69 kPa, 138 kPa and 207 kPa), and four different levels of axle loads (4120 N, 4730 N, 5340 N and 5950 N). The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1) The steering torque was increased with the increase in steering angle for all experimental levels of ground conditions, axle loads and inflation pressures of tire. 2) As the axle load increased, the steering torque of the tractor increased for all ground conditions, and the increasing rate of the steering torque with the increase of axle load was greater at on-road than at off-road. 3) As the tire inflation pressure decreased, the steering torque increased. Also the increasing tendency of the steering torque with decreasing the tire inflation pressure showed that the harder the ground was, the larger the effect was. But for the soft ground condition, ground-I, no specific trend with inflation pressures was found. 4) Steering angle-steering torque relationship with ground conditions showed that the increasing rate of the steering torque was greater at on-road than off-road for small steering angle under 10 degree, and was greater at off-road than on-road for large steering angles over 10 degree.

  • The evaluation of the seismic hazard for a given site is to estimate the seismic ground motion at the surface. This is the result of the combination of the action of the seismic source, which generates seismic waves, the propagation of these waves between the source and the site, and site local conditions. The aim of this work is to evaluate the sensitivity of dynamic response of extended structures to spatial variable ground motions (SVGM). All factors of spatial variability of ground motion are considered, especially local site effect. In this paper, a method is presented to simulate spatially varying earthquake ground motions. The scheme for generating spatially varying ground motions is established for spatial locations on the ground surface with varying site conditions. In this proposed method, two steps are necessary. Firstly, the base rock motions are assumed to have the same intensity and are modelled with a filtered Tajimi-Kanai power spectral density function. An empirical coherency loss model is used to define spatial variable seismic ground motions at the base rock. In the second step, power spectral density function of ground motion on surface is derived by considering site amplification effect based on the one dimensional seismic wave propagation theory. Several dynamics analysis of a curved viaduct to various cases of spatially varying seismic ground motions are performed. For comparison, responses to uniform ground motion, to spatial ground motions without considering local site effect, to spatial ground motions with considering coherency loss, phase delay and local site effects are also calculated. The results showed that the generated seismic signals are strongly conditioned by the local site effect. In the same sense, the dynamic response of the viaduct is very sensitive of the variation of local geological conditions of the site. The effect of neglecting local site effect in dynamic analysis gives rise to a significant underestimation of the seismic demand of the structure.

  • In the case of subsea tunnels, hydro-mechanical coupled analysis is necessary for an exact design and construction. The consideration of the overstretched ground condition is also required because they are usually located at the great depth unlike the usual tunnels. Many researches have been performed on the estimation of relaxed rock mass height. However, there have been no researches on the estimation of relaxed rock mass height under overstretched ground conditions. In this study, therefore, hydro-mechanical coupled analyses were performed under the overstressed ground conditions and the relaxed rock mass heights were estimated based on the contour of the local safety factor around a tunnel.

  • The seismic deformation method is conventionally used as a seismic design for a multi-utility tunnel in Korea. In the seismic deformation method, the soil ground's natural period is one of the most critical factors for calculating the ground displacement using cosine functions. Correction factors for the natural period and shear wave velocity have been used to consider the non-linearity of dynamic soil properties. However, the correction factors have been issued because the correction factors have not been sufficiently studied to consider Korea's regional conditions. This paper aims to evaluate the natural periods for the seismic deformation method considering Korea's ground conditions. Ground response analysis was performed using seven real earthquake records on twelve sites with different soil conditions where actual multi-utility tunnels are installed. As a result, natural periods of the sites were analyzed and new correction factors were proposed according to seismic performance and Korea's regional conditions.
