  • In this study, we investigated influence of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) modified by washless multilayering of polyelectrolytes on paper quality. Three layers of polyelectrolytes (cationic starch/anionic polyacrylamide/cationic starch) were formed on the surface of GCC using laboratory inline washless polyelectrolytes multilayering system, which was called inline LbL GCC. Base papers were prepared with untreated GCC or inline LbL GCC using a laboratory handsheet former. These handsheets were coated with rod coater, and then printed by black ink. Properties of base paper and fold crack of coated paper were evaluated. Base paper with inline LbL GCC showed much higher mechanical strength in terms of tensile index, strain, internal bond strength, and folding endurance. The fold crack of coated paper with inline LbL GCC occurred more frequently compared to coated paper with untreated GCC. This might be due to highly improved internal bond strength of base paper, which resulted in smaller delamination that played a role of stress dissipation. It would be recommended to design a proper coating layer in order to prevent fold crack.

  • In this article, we would like to investigate a durability characterization of cement mortar with inert filler, which is ground calcium carbonate(GCC). The kinds of techniques to evaluate cement mortar are chloride ion ingress, carbonation and sulfate attack. For the experimental result of the resistance of chloride ion ingress, carbonation and sulfate attack, as the addition of GCC makes decreasing the permeability by micro-filler effect, the specimens of $5{\sim}15%$ ratio of replacement are superior to the GCC0 mortar specimen with respect to durability of cement matrix in this scope.

  • Increasing the amount of filler in paper is of high interest for paper industry while maintaining its key sheet quality properties. In this study, a MFC-GCC composite, made through a co-grinding NBSK (Northern bleached softwood kraft) pulp with a ground calcium carbonate (Intracarb 60), was used as a strength aid in paper in order to evaluate a potential cost reduction through filler increase without sacrificing paper quality. Hand-sheets were made of NBSK and/or eucalyptus pulp by using white water recirculation in a Tappi sheet former and was compared its properties without or with MFC additions at different filler levels. It was found that the MFC-GCC composite has a large surface area compared to the fiber, allowing the formation of more hydrogen bonds in the web, thus giving natural strength to the paper. Overall results are encouraging that the MFC-GCC composite allows papermaker to reduce basis weight and maintain critical sheet properties.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the basic properties of polyester mortars using ground calcium carbonate(GCC), blast furance slag(BFS), fly ash(FA), ordinary portland cement(OPC) as fillers. Particle size distribution, particle shape and resin absorption of GCC, BFS, FA and OPC are checked. Polyester mortars with GCC, BFS, FA and OPC are prepared with various MEKPO content and tested for working life. The flexural and compressive strengths of the polyester mortars with MEKPO content of 0.5phr are evaluated. As a test result, the average sizes of GCC, BFS, FA and OPC are 9.7$\mu\textrm{m}$, 11.6$\mu\textrm{m}$, 21.2$\mu\textrm{m}$, 29.9$\mu\textrm{m}$. Resin absorption of FA is 1.5times larger than other fillers. The polyester mortar with FA at a MEKPO content of 0.5phr has the longest working life and the maximum flexural and compressive strengths.

  • To find a practical application approach of polyelectrolyte multilayering (PEM) on inorganic filler, we introduced PEM process without washing step and investigated the effect of shear condition on the washless PEM treatment of ground calcium carbonate (GCC). Washless multilayering on GCC was conducted under various shear conditions such as stirring, homogenization, and ultrasonication. Highly charged polyelectrolytes combination of polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDADMAC) and poly sodium 4-styrene sulfonate (PSS) and low charged polyelectrolytes combination with cationic starch and anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) were compared. In the case of highly charged polyelectrolytes combination, shear conditions did not affect the zeta potential and the particle size of treated GCC. However, the modified GCC particles with low charged polyelectrolytes were more dispersed under higher shear condition while maintaining the zeta potential. In addition, GCC was successfully modified through laboratory inline washless polyelectrolyte multilayering system which consists of homogenizers and pumps.

  • In this experiment the effects of the packing structure of pigment on the surface characteristics (smoothness and gloss) of coated paper are studied. Four different kinds of inorganic pigments(clay), ground calcium carbonate(GCC), two of precipitated calcium carbonates(PCC), and two organic pigments(solid bead and hollow type) were used. The method of measuring the relative sediment volume(RSV) was used to analyze the packing structure of coating layer. The relative sediment volume was measured, using the pressure dewatering dry-cake method(PDDM) and centrifuge method. Also, the particle size distribution of coating pigment was determined. The results showed that small amount of organic pigment, added to inorganic pigment, improved smoothness and its effect was greater when GCC was used as inorganic pigment. The efficiency of organic pigment depended upon the inorganic pigment since the organic pigment is packed in the pores formed by the inorganic pigment.

  • In order to improve the optical properties and printability of paper, various fillers are used in papermaking. This study was performed to investigate several fillers-precipitated calcium carbonate(PCC), ground calcium carbonate(GCC), and blends(PCC/talc or micro-talc(MVP) and GCC/talc or micro-talc(MVP)-for their effects on various newsprint properties. Results obtained from the study were summarized as follows ; 1) PCC treatment gave about 16.8% higher retention than GCC treatment at the filler level of 5% and the retention of filler in the handsheet increased as average particle size of mixed filler was increasing($PCC{\leq}GCC<MVP<talc$). 2) PCC treatment kept opacity more highly than no filler treatment and opacity decreased as average particle size of mixed filler was increasing. 3) Independent treatment of PCC kept tear strength more effectively than GeC did, and tear strength increased as average particle size of mixed filler was increasing. 4) Independent treatment of pee kept tensile strength more highly than other treatments and Gee treatment kept tensile strength highly than pee treatment under mixed filler treatment. 5) Burst strength under PCC treatments decreased linearly as average particle size of mixed filler was increasing. 6) Compared "With non-filler treatment, filler treatment gave much better printability.

  • Recently, the use of wood resources has been limited due to global environmental change, like global warming and desertification. It is very critical in Korea's paper industries because lots of virgin pulp are dependant on direct import from abroad for printing grade of paper. In this work, the alternatively best available technique for reducing the import amounts of BKP (bleached Kraft pulp) was considered by mixing DIP (deinked pulp) and TMP (thermomechanical pulp) for the manufacture of high quality paper. Generally known, the sheet prepared from fibrous raw materials of DIP and TMP has lower strength and optical properties than that prepared from BKP. This study was aimed to improve the sheet quality by using DIP and TMP. 4 kinds of polyelectrolytes were approached to find out the best effects on physical strength and optical brightness improvements, and high retention behaviors with GCC (ground calcium carbonate). In conclusion, amphoteric PAM with 1,000,000 molecular weight (g/mol) and 0.5 charge density (meq/g) was best for the improvement of strength properties with the mixture of DIP and TMP. GCC retention rate was also the highest with cationic-PAM of above 2,000,000 molecular weight (g/mol) and about 2.0-3.0 charge density (meq/g) of strengthening agent.

  • The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of pigment composition on the calendering response and structure of the coated paper. Calendering response of the coated paper was determined from the gloss values of the uncalendered and calendered coated papers, and the relationship between gloss and coating structure was discussed. The surface and cross section of the coating layer was observed using a scanning electron microscope to examine the coating structure. Coating layers were hardened in epoxy resin and polished with carbimet paper disc for preparing SEM samples. Maximum calendering response was obtained for the coated paper prepared from 80pph of clay and 20pph of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) as pigments. Photomicrographs of the surface and cross section of the coating layer show that clay tends to form dense coating structure, while GCC tends to form bulky coating layer.

  • This paper was intended to find out the relationship between optical and interior properties of coated paper and printability with the variation of particle size of ground calcium carbonate(GCC) by using Mercury Porosimeter, and to find out the pore properties of coated paper as well. The viscosity and water retention of coating color was increased and smothness, sheet gloss and porosity of coated paper were improved as the particle size of GCC was decreased. However, there was no difference in opacity and brightness of coated paper. The pore volume of coated paper was decreased, but the number of pores was drastically increased according to the decrease of the particle size of GCC. The weight of ink transferred into coated paper was increased in proportion to pore volume of coated paper. However, the weight of damping water and ink induced toward coated paper was slightly increased. Ink setting was accelerated printing gloss was not changed. Therefore, optical and interior properties of coated paper seemed to be affected by the pore property of coated paper and printability was also affected by it.
