  • Frozen ground in cold region consists of an upper active layer and lower permafrost which is permanently frozen land. During the summer season, the air temperature is high enough to make the frozen ground melt, which causes the reduction of soil strength and thaw settlement. These phenomena result in structural instability, so it is necessary to apply frozen ground stability techniques. Thermosyphon is a closed natural two-phase convection device to maintain the ground temperature below $0^{\circ}C$ by extracting heat from the ground and discharges it into the atmosphere. Experimental and numerical investigation has been performed to estimate the effect of the refrigerant filling ratio in thermosyphon using R-134a refrigerant and the thermal conductance of the thermosyphon.

  • A large amount of site investigation data is essential to obtain reliable design value. However, site investigations are generally insufficient due to economic problems. It is important to estimate the ground profile information in unboring region for accurate earthwork-volume prediction, and such ground profile information can be estimated by using the geo-statistical approach. Furthermore, the ground profile information in unboring region can be estimated by training a model via machine learning technique such as artificial neural network. In this paper, artificial neural network-based model estimated the ground profile information in unboring region, and this results were compared with that of ordinary kriging technique, which is referred to the geo-statistical approach. Accordingly, a total of 84 ground profile information in an actual bridge environment was split into 75 training and 9 test databases. The observed ground profile information of the test database was compared with those of the ordinary kriging technique and artificial neural network.

  • This paper investigates the effects of excavation-induced ground movements on nearby structures, considering soil-structure interactions of different soil and structural characteristics. The response of four and two-story block structures, which are subjected to excavation-induced advancing ground movements, are investigated in different soil conditions using numerical analysis. The structures for numerical analysis are modelled to have cracks when the shear and tensile stress exceed the maximum shear and tensile strength. The response of four and two-story block structures are investigated with advancing ground movement phases and compared with the response of structures which are subjected to excavation-induced total ground movement. The response of structures is compared among others in terms of the magnitude and shape of deformations and cracks in structures for different structure and ground conditions. The results of the comparison provide a background for better understandings for controlling and minimizing building damage on nearby structures due to excavation-induced ground movements.

  • The objective of this study is to develope ground heat exchanger using PHC file used to building foundation, and it's element technology. So we construct PHC ground heat exchanger in the apartment house's PHC foundation and evaluate it's performance. First, we study PHC file type, heat exchanger pipe, grouting materials, and present apartment house's foundation condition for PHC ground heat exchanger and design it's proto type. Second according to grouting materials, we estimate construction convenience, and it's performance. Construction convenience side, PB 22 A pipe and sand grouting with moisture was good for PHC ground heat exchanger elements. Experiment result is very superior. Thermal conductivity B, C type(sand, gravel) was respectively 32.4 W/m$^{\circ}C$, 36.5 W/m$^{\circ}C$, D(concrete) Type 27.8 W/m$^{\circ}C$, E(bentonite) Type 19.6 W/m$^{\circ}C$. Thermal interference for 4 day experiment period in 3.8 m was very small. So PHC file is good for using ground heat exchanger.

  • The configuration of an open ground floor (pilotis) is a common and very critical irregularity observed in multistory reinforced concrete frame structures. The characteristics and the geometrical formation of the beams of the first story proved to be a critical parameter for the overall seismic behavior of this type of Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures. In this work the combination of open ground floor (pilotis) morphology with very strong perimetrical beams at the level of the first story is studied. The observation of the seismic damages and the in situ measurements of the fundamental period of four buildings with this morphology and Π-shaped plan view are presented herein. Further analytical results of a pilotis type Π-shaped RC structure are also included in the study. From the measurements and the analytical results yield that the open ground floor configuration greatly influences the fundamental period whereas this morphology in combination with strong beams can lead to severe local shear damages in the columns of the ground floor. The structural damage was limited in the columns of the ground floor and yet based on the changes of the in situ measured fundamental period the damaged level is assessed as DI=88%. Furthermore, due to the Π-shape of the plan view the tendency of the parts of the building to move independently strongly influences the distribution of the damages over the ground floor vertical elements.

  • The radar wind profiler data contaminates with various non-atmospheric components that produce errors in moments and wind velocity estimations. This study implemented an adaptive Gaussian model to detect and remove the clutter from the radar return. This model includes DC filtering, ground clutter recognition, Gaussian fitting, and cost function to mitigate the clutter component. The adaptive model tested for the various types of clutter components and found that it is effective in clutter removal process. It is also applied for the both time series and spectrum datasets. The moments estimated using this method are compared with those derived using conventional DC-filtering clutter removal method. The comparisons show that the proposed method effectively removes the clutter and produce reliable moments.

  • In the present study, performances of fuel cell driven compound source hybrid heat pump system applied to a large community building are simulated. Among several renewable energy sources, ground, river, sea, and waste water sources are chosen as available alternative energies. The performance and energy cost are varied with the hybrid heat pump sources. The system design and operation process appropriate for the surrounding circumstance guarantee the high benefit of the heat pump system applied to a large community building. Th system is driven by fuel cell system instead of the late-night electricity due to the advantages of the low energy cost and waste heat with high temperature.

  • When the walls and floor of a tunnel are excited by a train, a ground vibration energy is transmitted to the surface and to footing of a nearby buildings. Excessive vibration affected to a building structures causes undesirable effect to the structural safety and the perception on residents in building. In this paper, a simple approach is introduced to predict how much vibration, in terms of level and spectra, is transmitted through the ground from the tunnel vibration excitation. A high rise building on a tunnel is selected as an application example of this case study.

  • In the current seismic design codes design earthquake is usually defined as the earthquake with the 90 percent probability of not being exceeded in the life time of a structure which is assumed as 50 years equivalent to the earthquake with 475 year recurrence period. However the life time of tall building structures may be much longer than 50 yers. The current seismic design code requires the modal analysis or dynamic time history analysis for the buildings with the height exceeding a certain height limit. The objective of this study is to collect the earthquake ground motion(EQGM) which can be used for dynamic time history analysis for tall buildings. For this purpose linear elastic design response spectrum (LEDRS) in the code is scaled to account for the recurrence period of the design earthquake. The earthquake ground motions which has been recorded are calibrated to fit the scaled LEDRS. The set of calibrated EQGM can be treated as design EQGM for the design of tall building with longer lifetime than ordinary building.
