A Basic Study on the Monitoring of Grinding Burn by Grinding Power Signatures (연삭동력에 의한 Grinding Burn 검지를 위한 기초적 연구)

  • Grinding burn formed on the ground surface is related to the maximum temperature of workpiece surface and wheel temperature in the grinding process. The thermal characteristics of workpiece and grinding conditions on the surface temperature of the oxidation growing layer after get out of contact with the grinding wheel. The assumption used in grinding power signatures leads to the local temperature distribution between grinding wheel and workpiece, i.e., a single curve determines temperatures anywhere within the grinding wheel at anytime. This information is useful in the study of the grinding bum penetration into the wheel and thus provides an presentation of grinding trouble monitoring for the burning. On the basis of grinding power signatures in the wheel, thermally optimum conditions are defined and controlled. To cope with grinding burn, the use of grinding power signatures is an effective monitoring systems when occurring the grinding process. In this paper, the identified parameters suggested in this study which are derived from the grinding power signatures are presented.

  • In the grinding of difficult-to-materials, the major problmes of conventional grinding are grinding burn, wheel wear, grinding surface crack, loading and glazing, When a conventioanl grinding wheel is used, wheel wear and grinding surface crack easily occur in low heat conductive material and annealed steel. Intermittent grinding is suitable for diffcult-to-matrical such as stainless steel, titanium alloy, aluminum alloy and copper alloy. The purpose of this paper is to develop a new type intermittent wheel of the grinding system for improving the problem of stainless steel grinding, to observe the effect of intermittent grinding on surface quality and grinding characteristics of stainless steel grinding using intermittent grinding wheel. The characteristics of intermittent grinding system improve surface quality, low grinding temperature and low loading.

A Quantitative Study of Grinding Characteristics on Particle Size and Grinding Consumption Energy by Stirred Ball Mill (입자경과 분쇄소비동력의 고찰에 의한 교반볼밀 분쇄특성의 정량적 연구)

  • A series of wet grinding experiments have been carried out using a stirred ball mill to systematically investigate consideration of grinding characteristics. The particle size distribution and median diameter of the grinding consumption power for a given grinding time were considered. Also, the effect of grinding aids on particle size and grinding consumption energy defined as the summation of grinding power was investigated. The grinding aids had influence on the smaller products size and decrease grinding consumption energy because the function of grinding aids were to be attribute to the prevention of agglomeration and ball and grinding chamber wall coating of sample powder. The grinding process seemed to be controlled by the force of agglomeration of the ground products. It was demonstrated that the particle size and grinding consumption energy could be more decreased by the addition of grinding aids.

  • In silicon wafer manufacturing process, the grinding process has been adopted to improve the flatness of wafer. The grinding of wafer is usually used by the infeed grinding machine. The infeed grinding machine has been depended on imports. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the infeed grinding machine because the demand of the infeed grinding machine is increasing more and more. This paper describes the technologies of infeed grinding machine and intend to introduce the studies in the development of the intelligent grinding system for grinding of wafer. The air bearing spindle for the infeed grinding machine was developed by domestic technologies and the grinding part design of the intelligent grinding system for wafer grinding was completed.

  • High precision internal plunge grinding is difficult because of the decrease in the quill stiffness due to the small diameter of wheel. In this paper, the characteristics of internal plunge grinding were investigated. Grinding experiments were performed at various grinding conditions with vitrified bonded CBN wheels. The grinding period was assumed to be consisted of rough grinding and fine grinding. The classification of grinding was determined int terms of the normal grinding forces and actual depth of cut. The experimental results indicate that the higher depth of cut and infeed speed result in the longer rough grinding time. The maximum normal grinding force was nearly equal to the static force and it decreases exponentially as the grinding continues.

  • Thermal problems of creep-feed grinding are more serious than regular grinding. So grinding fluid supply in creep-feed grinding is very important. Grinding fluid supply quantity is not linear with effectiveness because grinding wheel is porosity material and the grinding area is solid contact area. In this paper, by using AE signal, optimal quantity of fluid supply was determined. And surface characteristics of wet creep-feed grinding were analized.

  • After observing grinding characteristics according to variable grinding condition in order to raise the grinding effect without making worse the grinding quality by using general grinding machine, main conclusions of this study are as follows; 1) When grinding quality is constant, grinding effect is changed according to the speed of the workpiece. But the rapidly increasing critical speed of table is($V_w{\leq}4m/min$). 2) As grinding effect is equal, the lower the speed of the workpiece becomes, the lower the grinding force and surface roughness obtains good results. 3) In terms of grinding method, the down cut grinding method produces good grinding surface royghness in case of little grinding depth;otherwise, the up cut method in case of more grinding depth.

  • Conventionally, grinding of stainless steel, aluminium ally, copper alloy, and titanum alloy are difficult to obtain the high quality finish, because they have the mechanical properties such as low hardness, high toughness which result in the loading of wheel and the poor surface finish. Inorder to perform the grinding operations for these sorts of materials easily, the discontinuous grinding wheel with multi-porous grooves has newly been developed. The multi-porous grooves were formed during wheel production. This discontinous grinding wheel increases the grinding performance. It is desirable to use the discontinuous grinding wheel when grinding materials wiht high efficiency and accuracy which is impossible by conventional wheels. In this paper, the constructing and manufacturing method of grinding wheel with multi-proous grooves are explained, and the grinding charateristics of discontinuous grinding wheel are also illustrate.

  • This paper reports some experimental results of cylindrical external grinding using CBN wheels. Many experimental studies for surface grinding have been done, but not for the cylindrical grinding due to the difficulty of grinding force measurement. In this paper a new experimental device has been proposed for the grinding force measurement in cylindrical grinding. The cylindrical grinding experiments were carried out at various grinding conditions with several CBN grinding wheels. The experimental results indicate that the CBN wheels with smaller grains result in the higher grinding forces in both SCM415 and STD11 workpieces. The grinding forces of all wheels were proportional to the infeed speeds and the difference of each wheels was prominent at high infeed speed for SCM415.
