  • The feasibility study for the stabilization process using 5 amendments was performed to quantify As-immobilization efficiency in farmland soils around Samkwang abandoned mine, Korea. For the batch experiments, with 2% and 3% of granular lime(2-5 mm in diameter), leaching concentration of As from the soil decreased by 86% and 95% respectively, compared to that without the amendment. When 5% and 10% of granular limestone was added in the soil, As concentration decreased by 82% and 95%, showing that lime and limestone has a great capability to immobilize As in the soil. From the results of batch experiments, continuous column(15 cm in dimeter and 100 cm in length) tests using granular lime and limestone as amendments was performed. Without the amendment, As concentration from the effluent of the column ranged from 167 ${\mu}g$/L to 845 ${\mu}g$/L, which were higher than Korea Drinking Water Limit(50 ${\mu}g$/L). However, only with 1% and 2% of lime, As concentration from the column dramatically decreased by 97% for 9 years rainfall and maintained below 50 ${\mu}g$/L. With 5% of limestone and the mixed amendment(1% of lime + 2% of limestone), more than 95% diminution of As leaching from the column occurred within I year rainfall and maintained below 20 ${\mu}g$/L, suggesting that the capability of limestone to immobilize As in the farmland soil was outstanding and similar to that of lime. Results of experiments suggested that As stabilization process using limestone could be more available to immobilize As from the soil than using lime because of low pH increase and thus less harmful side effect.

  • Reutilization of solid waste such as Tire Derived Aggregate (TDA) and mixing it with soft soil for backfill material not only reduces the required volume of backfill soil (i.e., sand-mining procedures; reinforcement), but also preserves the environment from pollution by recycling. TDA is a widely-used material that has a good track record for improving sustainable construction. This paper attempted to investigate the performance of Kaolin-TDA mixtures as a backfill material underneath a strip footing and close to a retaining wall. For this purpose, different types of TDA i.e., powdery, shredded, small-size granular (1-4 mm) and large-size granular (5-8 mm), were mixed with Kaolin at 0, 20, 40, and 60% by weight. Static surcharge load with the rate of 10 kPa per min was applied on the strip footing until the failure of footing happened. The behaviour of samples K80-G (1-4 mm) 20 and K80-G (5-8 mm) 20 were identical to that of pure Kaolin, except that the maximum footing stress had grown by roughly three times (300-310 kPa). Therefore, it can be concluded that the total flexibility of the backfill and shear strength of the strip footing have been increased by adding the TDA. The results indicate that, a significant increase in the failure vertical stress of the footing is observed at the optimum mixture content. In addition, the TDA increases the elasticity behaviour of the backfill.

  • Settlement induced by low -level vibration on granular soils is too complect to predict with one or two fact ors. Factors affecting vibration induced settlement were investigated, and a settlement prediction model on granular soils was developed using multifactorial experimental design(MED). Factors such as vibration amplitude, deviatoric stress, confining pressure, soil gradation, duration of vibration, moisture content, and relative density were considered in this study. A special vibratory frame was designed to shake a soil specimen within a triaxial cell. MED allowed the authors to investigate the effect of many factors using a relatively small number of experiments. The most significant factors on settlement were vibrati on amplitued, confining pressure, and defiatoric stress. Comparable settlement was occurred even under low-level vibration ranging from 2.5 to 18mm1sec, and stress am sotropy was found to be an important factor on settlement.

  • Shear banding, the localization of deformation into thin zones, has a quite practical relevance, as stability and deformation characteristics of earth structures are controlled by the soil behavior within the shear band. In this study, for understanding occurrence and developed pattern of shear band, plane strain compression tests were performed on three soils with different particle-size distribution under various conditions. Digital images were captured during the experiments; then, deformation of a specimen was evaluated by digital image analysis technique. The characteristics of a shear band were evaluated from the state shortly after post-peak occurrence to critical state. Additionally, the statistical procedure was developed to determine the reasonable thickness of a shear band.

  • This study was conducted to develop n convenient and efficient granular type absorbent with high CEC from powdery zeolite, which is a waste produced while crushing the natural zeolite of Korea to get a particular particle size. The change of mineralogical characteristics during hydrothermal alternation of natural zeolite to Na-P zeolite in alkaline solution at various reaction times was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and total elemental analysis. The columnar aggregate of Na-P Zeolite was produced by calcinating the natural zeolite-charcoal extrudates of about 3 mm diameter. In 24 hours reaction, clinoptillonite, mordenite and feldspar in natural zeolite were disappeared by 3 N NaOH treatment, while Na-P Zeolite with spherical granular structure was newly detected by XRD. As increasing reaction time, Si/Al ratio in remaining solution was deceased. The CEC of the synthesized material increased more than 2 times compared with that of natural zeolite, although the diameter of Na-P zeolite were rather increased.

  • To measure the soil deformation, two common techniques of the digital image analysis-Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Digital Image Correlation (DIC)-have been used. To generally apply these techniques to the soils, the accuracy of these techniques should be evaluated under various conditions. In this study, the influence factors including the image resolution, the degree of displacement and deformation, the size of pixel subsets, and analysis techniques were analyzed. The deformation of an idealized particle assembly using the discrete element method was measured by the digital image analyses, and then the results were compared with the actual deformations. To conduct the optimal digital image analysis, various factors are systematically analyzed in terms of the degree of the displacement and the deformation.

  • Numerical analysis for the in-situ top base foundation (In-situ TBF) was carried out in order to investigate the effect of bearing capacity and the load delivering mechanisms in granular soil. The input data for the numerical model was prepared from the result obtained from the plate load test and full size in-situ TBF field tests. According to the result of numerical analysis, the behavior of in-situ TBF showed that bearing capacity of the foundation increased by $50{\sim}100%$ and settlement was reduced up to $1/2{\sim}1/3$ comparing to other types foundation. The effect of cone-shaped part of the in-situ TBF was as important as pile part for the improvement of foundation stability. The variation of the length of pile part indicated that the present length was proved satisfactory in terms of effectiveness.

  • Traditional limit equilibrium method needs an assumption of the failure surface to calculate the bearing capapcity of the shallow foundation. From the viewpoint of the mechanics of granular materials, however, the failure of the soil mass is initated by the local buckling of the contact force chains. In this study we observed the directional distribution of the contact force chains in the granular assembly stacked by model particles subjected to the model shallow foundation during loading. Two sets of the assemblies with a regular structure and initially local imperfection were prepared for tests. Existence of the initial local imperfection has a significant effect on the directional distribution of the contact force chains. The bearing capacity of the assembly with local imperfection is only 67% the capacity of the assembly with the regular structure.

  • The GCP (Granular Compaction Pile) for the improvement objective of soft ground has been frequently studied. However, these studies were the results deduced on the basis of the numerical analysis and the laboratory model tests, and there was no study method to apply the effects of the bulging failure of a flexible pile. In this study, the sensitivity of the load-settlement curves of the uniform and the tapered GCP dependant on the geotechnical parameters estimated from N value of standard penetration test (SPT) was analyzed. It was estimated reasonably that, in the very soft clay soil (N=3 or less), elastic modulus was 700~2000 kPa and Poisson's ratio was 0.40~0.48.
