Barrier is widely used for synchronization in parallel programs. Since the process arrived earlier than others should wait at the barrier, the total processor utilization decreases. In this paper, to find the sources of the barrier waiting time, parallel programs are executed on the various grain sizes through execution-driven simulations. In simulation studies, we found that even if approximately equal amounts of work are distributed to each processor, all processes may not arrive at a barrier at the same time. The reasons are that the different numbers of cache misses and instructions within partitioned grains result in the difference in arrival time of processors at the barrier.
Lapping is a very complicated and random process resulting from the variation of abrasive grains in its sizes and shapes and from the numerous factors having an effect on the process quality. This paper presents a study of a $2^4$ full factorial experimental design and analysis to optimize surface quality in lapping operation. The optimization of the factors to obtain minimum surface roughness was carried out by incorporating effect plots, main effect plots, interaction plots, analysis of variance(ANOVA), surface plots, and contour plots. The statistical design experiments, designed to reduce the total number of experiments required, indicated that, within the selected conditions, all the parameters influenced at a significance level of 5%. In addition, some of the possible interactions between these parameters also influenced the lapping process, especially those that were of third order. A regression model was suggested and fitted the experimental data very well.

In this study, our varistors based on M.Matsuoke's composition were fabricated with ZnO nano-powder whose sizes were 50nm and 100nm. Electrical properties of ZnO nano-powder varistors were obtained by capacitance-voltage and frequency-real impedance. nano-powder varistors are indicated the change of the interface defects density $N_t$ at the grain boundaries and the donor concentration $N_d$ in the ZnO grains. Frequency analysis was accomplished to understand the equivalent circuit.

The paper presents the comparative results of TiAlN coatings deposited by DC and pulsed DC asymmetric bipolar magnetron sputtering systems. The results show that, with the decreasing duty cycle and increasing pulse frequency, the coating morphology changes from a columnar to a dense structure, with finer grains. Pulsed sputtered TiAlN coatings showed higher hardness, higher residual stress, and smaller grain sizes than dc prepared TiAlN coatings. Moreover residual stress of pulsed sputtered TiAlN coatings increased on increasing pulse frequency. Meanwhile, the surface roughness decreased continuously with increasing pulsed DC frequency up to 50 kHz.

Thermal fracture and cracking near the perihelion are found to be a possible mechanism to produce the dust trail of the near-Earth asteroid, (3200) Phaethon (Jewitt and Li, 2013, ApJ 771, L36). It is, however, not well understood how the debris particles were escalated from the regolith against the asteroid's gravity. Thus, the scenario that these debris particles are responsible for the detected activities (Li and Jewitt, 2013, ApJ, 145, 154), is not complete yet. Here, we hypothesize that the thermal radiation pressure around the perihelion passage would exert substantial force outwards from the regolith on dust grains, and they can be lifted up and contributes the dust tail formation with further help of solar radiation pressure. Our modeling indicates that particles with sizes of roughly ~1-10 micron can be ejected from Phaethon by the mechanism, while a detailed model of gravitational field is required for accurate estimation of the particle size range. Our idea is not necessarily limited to Phaethon case, but is applicable to any atmosphereless bodies.
Threshing operation may be one of the most important processes in the paddy post-production system as far as the grain loss and labor requirement are concerned . head-feeding type threshers commercially available now in Korea originally were developed for threshing dry paddy in the range of 15 to 17 % in wet basis. However, threshing wet-paddy with the grain moisture content above 20 % has been strongly recommended, especially for new high-yielding Indica -type varieties ; (1) to reduce high grain loss incurred due to the handling operations, and (2) to prevent the quantitative and qualitative loss of milled -rice when unthreshed grains are rewetted due to the rainfall. The objective of this study were to investigate the adaptability of both a head-feeding type thresher and a throw-in type thresher to wet-paddy , and to find out the possiblilities of improving the components of these threshers threshing. Four varieties, Suweon 264 and Milyang 24 as Tongil sister line varieties, minehikari and Jinhueng as Japonica-type varieties, were used at the different levels of the moisture content of grains. Both the feed rate and the cylinder speed were varied for each material and each machine. The thresher output quality , composition of tailing return, and separating loss were analyzed from the sampels taken at each treatment. A separate experiment for measurement opf the power requirement of the head-feeding type thresher was also performed. The results are summarized as follows : 1. There was a difference in the thresher output quality between rice varieties. In case of wet-paddy threshing at 550 rpm , grains with branchlet and torn heads for the Suweon 264 were 12 % and 7 % of the total output in weight, respectively, and for the Minehikari 4.5 % and 2 % respectively. In case of dry paddy threshing , those for the Suweon 264 were 8 % and 5% , and for the Minehikari 4% and 1% respectively. However, those for the Milyang 23 , which is highly susceptable to shattering, were much lower with 1 % and 0.5% respectively, regardless of the moisture content of the paddy. Therefore, it is desirable to breed rice varieties of the same physical properties as well as to improve a thresher adaptable to all the varieties. Torn heads, which increased with the moisture content of rall the varieties except the Milyang 23 , decreased as the cylinder speed increased, but grains with branchlet didnt decrease. The damaged kernels increased with the cylinder speed. 3. The thresher output quality was not affected much by the feed rate. But grains with branchlet and torn heads increased slightly with the feed rate for the head-feeding type thresher since higher resistance lowered at the cylinder speed. 4. In order to reduce grains with branchlet and torn heads in wet-paddy threshing , it is desirable to improve the head-feeding type thresher by developing a new type of cylinder which to not give excess impact on kernels or a concave which has differenct sizes of holes at different locations along the cylinder. 5. For the head-feeding type thresher, there was a difference in separating loss between the varieties. At the cylinder speed of 600 rpm the separating losses for the Minehikari and the Suweon 264 were 1.2% and 0.6% respectively. The separating loss of the head-feeding type thresher was not affected by the moisture content of paddy while that of the Mini-aged thresher increased with the moisture content. 6. From the analysis of the tailings return , to appeared that the tailings return mechanism didn't function properly because lots of single grains and rubbishes were unnecessarily returned. 7. Adding a vibrating sieve to the head-feeding type thresher could increase the efficiency of separation. Consequently , the tailing return mechanism would function properly since unnecessary return could be educed greatly. 8. The power required for the head-feeding type thresher was not affected by the moisture content of paddy, but the average power increased linearly with the feed rate. The power also increased with the cylinder speed.

Aluminum hydrates were synthesized using $AlCl_3$.$6H_2O$as starting material by precipitation method. The phases of obtained powder were amorphous, boehmite, bayerite, nordstrandite depending on the pH of solutions. Aluminum hydrates transformed to $\alpha-Al_2O_3$via $\gamma$- $Al_2O_3$,$\delta$- $Al_2O_3$,and $\theta$-$Al_2O_3$,and particle sizes were grown by increment of heating temperature. The TEX>$\gamma$- $Al_2O_3$ powder was coated on intermediate layer of ceramic membrane by the dip-coating method, and unsupported membrane was also prepared for comparison. The supported layer showed porous structure with small grains, but the unsupported layer revealed interconnected larger grains. Grain growth is dominant in the unsupported layer than in the supported one.
Wing and secondary cracks are unique types of cracks observed in rock masses subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compressive loading conditions. In this study, morphological features of wing and secondary cracks developed in gypsum specimens are investigated in the macro and micro scales. Along the path of wing crack, microtensile cracks are observed. Microtensile cracks coalesce with pores and show branch phenomenon. From the onset of the wing crack, multiple initiations of microtensile cracks are observed. Microtensile cracks show tortuous propagation paths and relatively constant aperture of the cracks during the propagation. It is shown that microtensile cracks propagate by splitting failure. At the micro scale, microfsults are observed in the path of the secondary cracks. Along the path of the secondary cracks, separation of grains and conglomerate grains, oblique microfaults, and irregular aperture of microfault are observed. These features show that the secondary cracks are produced in shear mode. The measured sizes of fracture process zone across the propagation direction near the tip of wing and secondary cracks range from 10$\mu{m}$ to 20$\mu{m}$ far wing cracks and from 100$\mu{m}$ to 200$\mu{m}$ for secondary cracks, respectively.
Multi-axial forging (MAF), a severe plastic deformation technique, is known to be difficult to obtain materials with homogeneous microstructures. Recently, multi-axial diagonal forging (MADF) process has been developed to solve this problem. In this study, in order to compare the microstructural and mechanical homogeneities of the MAFed and MADFed samples, oxygen-free copper (OFC) cubes measuring 25 mm in length were deformed through MAF and MADF processes and the average grain size and hardness were measured at the edge, face, and center regions of the samples. In the MAFed samples, ultrafine grains were formed at the center region, but a considerable amount of coarse grains remain at the face region. Therefore, the MAFed samples showed a high inhomogeneity in regards to grain size and hardness. On the contrary, in the case of the MADFed sample, the grain sizes at the edge, face, and center regions were similar and the hardness in all the regions are almost similar. This indicates that the MADFed sample has a homogeneous microstructure and uniform mechanical properties, which can be attributed to the homogeneous distribution of the effective strain throughout the material. The results of this study suggests that the MADF is a suitable process in the fabrication of high-strength copper materials with a homogeneous and ultrafine grain structure.
