  • Densification behavior, microstructural evolution, and mechanical properties of hot-pressed specimens using $\beta$-SiC and $\alpha$-SiC powder with Al2O3 additive were studied. Beta-SiC powder was fully densified as 205$0^{\circ}C$, but $\alpha$-SiC powder was at 210$0^{\circ}C$. The maximum flexural strength and the fracture toughness of the specimen hot-pressed using $\beta$-SiC powder were 681 MPa and 6.7 MPa{{{{ SQRT {m } }}, and thosevalues of specimen hot-pressed using $\alpha$-SiC powder were 452 MPa and 4.7 MPa{{{{ SQRT {m } }}, respectively. The strength superiority of specimen hot-pressed using $\beta$-SiC powder was due to the finer grain size, and higher density. The higher toughness of specimen hot-pressed using $\beta$-SiC powder than $\alpha$-SiC powder than $\alpha$-SiC powder was due to the crack deflection mechanism arised from the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between $\alpha$ and $\beta$-SiC phases which were co-existed in the sintered body.

  • The study for thixoextrusion process of 7075, 7003 Al wrought alloys and AZ31 Mg wrought alloy was carried out with respect to reheating rate, isothermal holding temperature and time with an emphasis to the effect of homogenization on thixotropic micro-structures during the partial remelting, especially in the low liquid fraction ($f_L<0.2$). The liquid fraction and average grain size with respect to reheating profile such as reheating rate, isothermal holding temperature and time were almost uniform. It is considered very useful for thixoextrusion in terms of process control such as billet temperature control and actual extrusion time. Micro-structural controls of 7075, 7003 Al wrought alloys and AZ31 Mg wrought alloy before and after homogenization were available and thixotropic microstructures were obtained in both specimens.

  • This study investigated Austenite Grain Size (AGS) distribution in Low-Speed Round-Oval Rolling. Rolling experiments were done along with the AGS numerical modeling to characterize the final AGS distribution and its kinetics behavior. For bar rolling experiment, we utilized the pilot rolling mill, operating at 34 fixed rpm, at POSCO Technical Research Laboratories. To investigate the microstructural observation, the rigid-viscoplastic finite element analysis was combined with Hodgson's AGS evolution model. To consider the transient thermal history in the integrative AGS modeling, additivity rule was introduced. The integrated analysis revealed that static or meta-dynamic recrystallization is responsible for the AGS difference in the inner or outer region of rolled bar. Comparative study showed that the current AGS modeling approach can be used to model the overall AGS distribution in bar rolling processes. For more accurate AGS prediction, the AGS modeling method should be verified under the various rolling conditions such as different rolling speeds and different deformations.

  • We performed high pressure high temperature (HPHT) sintering for the 20 nm MgO powders at the temperatures from $600^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$ for only 5 min under 7 GPa pressure condition. To investigate the microstructure evolution and physical property change of the HPHT sintered MgO samples, we employed a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), density and Vickers hardness measurements. The SEM results showed that the grain size of the sintered MgO increased from 200 nm to $1.9{\mu}m$ as the sintering temperature increased. The density results showed that the sintered MgO achieved a more than 95% of the theoretical density in overall sintering temperature range. Based on Vickers hardness test, we confirmed that hardness increased as temperature increased. Our results implied that we might obtain the dense sintered MgO samples with an extremely short time and low temperature HPHT process compared to conventional electrical furnace sintering process.

  • The elecronic absorption and surface morphology evolution of two types of molecular double layer thin films, copper phthalocyanine(CuPc) layer deposited on top of chloro[subphtalocyaninato]boron(III) (SubPc) layer, denoted as SubPc/CuPc, and vice versa, at various thicknesses were invertigated using ultraviolet(UV)-visible spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Both types of double layer structures showed similar broadened absorption patterns in UV-visible region which were well consistent with fitted spectra by a simple linear combination of single layer absorption spectra of two materials. In contrast, the surface morphology of double layer structures was dependent on the order of deposition. For CuPc/SubPc structures, the surface morphology was characterized by elongated grains, characteristic of SubPc thin films, indicating the morphological influence of underlying CuPc layer on subsequent SubPc layer was not large. For SubPc/CuPc structures, however, the underlying SubPc layer acted as a morphological template for the subsequently deposited CuPc layer. It was also observed that the grain size of CuPc layer varied by the thickness of underlying SubPc layer.

  • Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) films were deposited with varying temperatures of ZrCl$_4$between 250~55$0^{\circ}C$ with YCl$_3$and the substrate at 100$0^{\circ}C$. Nanoamperes per square centimeter of the electric current were measured in the reactor during deposition and the current increased with increasing evaporation temperature of ZrCl$_4$. The zirconia nanometer size clusters were captured on the grid membrane near the substrate during the CVD process and observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The deposition rate decreased with increasing evaporation temperature of ZrCl$_4$. A cauliflower-shaped structure was developed at 25$0^{\circ}C$ then gradually changed to a faceted-grain structure above 35$0^{\circ}C$. Dependence of the growth rate and the morphological evolution on the evaporation temperature of ZrCl$_4$was approached by the charged cluster model.

  • Li-incorporated ZnO thin films were deposited by using ultrasonic-assisted spray pyrolysis deposition (SPD) system. To investigate the effect of Li-incorporation on the performance of ZnO thin films, the structural, electrical, and optical properites of the ZnO thin films were analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emssion scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Hall effect measurement, and UV-Vis spectrophotometry with variation of the Li concentraion in the ZnO sources. Without incorporation of Li element, the ZnO surface showed large spiral domains. As the Li content increases, the size of spiral domains decreased gradually, and finally formed mixed small grain and one-dimensional nanorod-like structures on the surface. This morphological evolution was explained based on an anti-surfactant effect of Li atoms on the ZnO growth surface. In addition, the Li-incorporation changed the optical and electrical properties of the ZnO thin films by modifying the crystalline defect structures by doping effects.

  • The hot deformation characteristics of pure molybdenum was investigated in the temperature range of $600{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range of $0.01{\sim}10.0/s$ using a Gleeble test machine. The power dissipation map for hot working was developed on the basis of the Dynamic Materials Model. According to the map, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) occurs in the temperature range of $1000{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ and the strain rate range of $0.01{\sim}10.0/s$, which are the optimum conditions for hot working of this material. The average grain size after DRX is $5{\mu}m$. The material undergoes flow instabilities at temperatures of $900{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ and the strain rates of $0.01{\sim}10.0/s$, as calculated by the continuum instability criterion.

  • We fabricated the textured Ni substrate and evaluated the effects of processing variables on microstructural evolution and texture transformation. Ni-rods as an initial specimen were prepared by two different methods, i.e., powder metallurgy(P/M) and plasma arc melting(PAM) The texture of the substrate was characterized by pole-figure and surface condition was evaluated by atomic force microscopy. It was observed that the texture of substrate made by P/M did not significantly varied with annealing temperature of 800~120$0^{\circ}C$ and the full-width at half-maximums (FWHM) of both in-plane and out-of-plane were 9$^{\circ}$~10$^{\circ}$. On the other hand, the texture of substrate made by PAM was more dependent on the annealing temperature and the FWHMs of in-plane texture was 9$^{\circ}$~13$^{\circ}$ at the temperature range. In addition, twin texture, (221)<221>, was formed as the temperature increased further. The grain size of substrate made by P/M was smaller than that made by PAM and this difference was correlated to the microstructure of initial specimens.
