1. The heat output by the insects, Oryzaephilus surinamensis, Tribolium confusum, Sitophilus zeamais and Sitophilus granarius, was investigated by reading the temperature of the inside of the grain in which the insects were developing in 2 Ib or 7 Ib jars incubated at $25^{\circ}C\; and\; 70\%$ R.H. 2. All the insects tested increase the temperature of grain, but the amount of heat produced by insects varies with the species of and the developmental stages of the insects. 3. It was found that all the temperature peaks correspond with the peak in number of the fourth instar larvae and the period in which the insects start to cause the heating corresponds to its 1 st and 2nd instar larvae. 4. Sitophilus spp. whose larvae live in the endosperm of the wheat produced more heat than Tribolium confusum and Oryzaephilus surinamensis whose larvae live on the grain. 5. Among the four species of insects, Sitophilus zeamais Produces the highest heat, followed by Sitophilus granarius, Tribolium confusum and Oryzaephilus surinamensis. 6. It is considered from the above results that the heat produced by insects seems to depend upon the species, the number and the age structure of population, and its its surroundings. 7. It is suggested therefore that when comparing the rate of development of insects kept at different densities. the effects caused by heating at the higher densities must be considered.
Marphysa sanguinea is the most well-known polychaete species with a high economic value. However, this species has a high mortality in the early rearing stage of aquaculture. This study was conducted to find out the optimal substrate size and organic contents for the growth and survival rate of M. sanguinea larvae and juveniles. It was observed that the smaller grain size (<Ø 0.063 mm) and high organic contents (5-10%) induced settlement and reduced settlement time of larvae. Moreover, the growth and survival rate of larvae reached high levels at Ø 0.004-0.016 mm of grain sizes and 5-7.5% of organic contents as advantageous substrates for settlement. The survival rate of juveniles reached over 90% in less than Ø 0.016 mm substrate on 15-day experiment for different grain sizes of substrates. These results indicated that substrate compositions of less than Ø 0.016 mm of sand size and 5-7.5% of organic contents in mud will enhance the productivity of M. sanguinea at the early stage.

This study was carried out to determine the action mechanism of sulfur-grain larvae extract (SGE) on anti-obesity and the reduction of blood lipid level in high-fat diet induced obese model animals. Animals were classified into a normal diet group (NC, normal control), HFD (high-fat diet without SGE), HFD 15 (high-fat diet + oral administration of 15 mg of SGE extract per 100 g body weight) and HFD 30 (high-fat diet + oral administration of 30 mg of SGE extract per 100 g body weight). The body weight gain declined in HFD 15 and HFD 30 groups compared with the HFD group, even though the diet intake increased significantly. The weight of liver and adipose tissue increased significantly in HFD group compared with in the HFD 15 and HFD 30 groups. Triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL-C and AI decreased in HFD 15 and HFD 30 groups compared with in the HFD group, but the contents of HDL-C increased significantly. Expression of SREPB-$1{\alpha}$, SREPB-2 mRNA in the liver was lower in the high-fat diet group compared with the HFD group, but the expression of LPL mRNA in adipose tissue and $PPAR{\alpha}$ increased significantly. Fat accumulation in the liver tissues and liver damage were greatly reduced in HFD 15 and HFD 30 groups compared with in the HFD group. The size of adipocytes became smaller in the HFD 15 and HFD 30 groups compared with HFD group. In conclusion, this research discovered for the first time that grain maggot has anti-obesity effects, by reducing the abdominal fat of obese model animals and lowering blood lipid level through the down-regulation of PPAR-$1{\alpha}$ and SREPB-2 mRNA and the up-regulation of PPAR-${\alpha}$ mRNA.

Distillers dried grain (DDG) and makgeolli spent grain (MSG) are agricultural byproducts to produce alcoholic beverage. However, they are known to contain enough nutrients. Mealworm is a promising insect resource for an animal feed ingredient as well as alternative human food. With low cost, DDG and MSG were investigated as a feed ingredient for rearing high quality mealworms. DDG and MSG were mixed with wheat bran and compared to control feed (only wheat bran) for its effects on larval survivorship, larval weight, duration for developmental period, pupation rate, and pupal weight. When DDG added, larval survivorship was reduced to 50~70% compared to the control group. Larvae fed on DDG were heavier from third to sixth week. Especially, larvae with 50% DDG were 28% heavier than the control group at the third week. For the larval period, the 50% DDG group was 11% less than that for the control. The pupal weight for the 30% DDG group was 7% heavier than that for the control group. Pupation rates for all the DDG groups were higher than 90%. When compared to the control, larval survivorship for the 70% MSG group was low, but the 50% and 70% MSG groups were high during the seventh and eighth weeks because of delayed development. After the eighth week, larvae with 70% MSG showed the highest larval weight increase as 9~18% compared to the control group. Except 70% MSG group, all of MSG groups showed more than 90% pupation rates. We confirmed that adding 30~50% of DDG or MSG to conventional wheat bran have a strong potential to replace the conventional wheat bran insect feed for quality insect production.
Edible insects have recently been increasingly promoted as a source of protein. As the number of farms rearing these insect increases, it is important to develop safe and nutritious feed sources to improve their commercial quality. The aim of the current study was to determine the effect of food by-products as feed supplements for the Korean rhinoceros beetle, Allomyrina dichotoma, which has been registered as a general food ingredient in Korea. We compared the effects of waste citrus peel, soybean curd cake, soybean oil meal, and brewers' dried grain on the growth of third instar larvae of A. dichotoma. Groups of larvae were fed with fermented sawdust and nine different combinations of the above by-products and the effects on their growth were measured until pupation. The highest survival rate was with feed supplemented with 10% brewers' dried grain (66.7%, p<0.05), and these larvae were also 26% heavier (p<0.05) than the control group that received no supplementation. In the 10% brewers' dried grain group, the larval period of third instar was shortened by almost 28 days (p<0.01) compared to the control group. Of all the groups, only that which was fed the brewers' dried grain supplement showed more than a 90% pupation rate (p<0.05). Therefore, brewers' dried grain may be useful as a source of feed for A. dichotoma.
This study investigated the effect of rearing conditions on the spawning habit, juvenile growth and larvae development of Marphysa sanguinea, to develop techniques of its artificial seed production. M. sanguinea released trochophore larvae around the burrow when the water temperature was from $18^{\circ}C$ to $22^{\circ}C$. Larvae floated away after staying in the burrow for a while. Larvae secreted mucus eight days after release, covering their whole body with it, and developed ten somites 20 days after release. In preference of juveniles in different grain sizes of sediment, the highest survival rate was made in the grain substrate of $1{\sim}2$ mm in the mean diameter, but the lowest was in the $2{\sim}3$ mm grain substrate. Optimum growth was obtained at the rearing temperature of $24^{\circ}C$(SGR 1.10%), and it reached over $2{\sim}3$ times higher weight gain and specific growth rate than those reared at $21^{\circ}C(0.64),\;18^{\circ}C(0.56)$ and $15^{\circ}C$(0.42) for 50 days. Salinity also made a great difference in the growth and survival rate. The highest weight gain and growth rate were shown when the juveniles were reared at salinity 30 psu.
The insecticidal activities of the essential oils of Artemisia vulgaris, Achillea millefolium, Anethum graveolens, Cimicifuga heracleifolia, Citrus paradisi, Chrysanthemum indicum, Eucalyptus dives, Neroli bigard, Nigella sativa, and Ruta graveolens against stored-grain insects, Plodia interpunctella and Tribolium castaneum larvae and adults were evaluated using fumigant and contact bioassays. Based on the $LD_{50}$ values in fumigant bioassay, A. millefolium ($0.12{\mu}g/cm^3$) and A. graveolens ($93.14{\mu}g\;cm^{-3}$) oil were most effective against P. interpunctella and T. castaneum adults. In addition, N. bigard ($139.11{\mu}g\;cm^{-3}$) and A. graveolens ($52.87{\mu}g\;cm^{-3}$) oil exhibit strong insecticidal activities against P. interpunctella and Tribolium castaneum larvae in contact bioassay. These results indicate that A. millefolium, A. graveolens, N. bigard, and A. graveolens oils could be effective natural acaricides for managing stored-grain insects, P. interpunctella and T. castaneum.

Mealworms, Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), are widely used as food sourcefor animal rearing as well as human diet. Conventionally, mealworms raised on wheat bran. In this study, we investigated the effects of brewer's spent grain (BSG) on the growth of mealworm larvae to reduce the rearing cost. We prepared five different diets with various BSG content, 0, 10, 30, 50, and 70% of heated air dried BSG with wheat bran. We compared survivorship, larval weight, developmental duration, pupation rate, and pupal weight of five different groups of T. molitor raised on these five diets. The larval survivorships were almost similar with the control group except a group with 70% of BSG. For the larval weight, groups with 30% and 50% of BSG gained more weight than that with control treatment, 0% of BSG. For the developmental period, the groups with 30% of BSG took less time compared to the control group. In all treatment groups, more than 90% of pupation rate were observed. Especially, the group with 30% of BSG showed highest pupation rate among the five groups. Wheat bran with 30~50% of BSG was the optimal diet for successive insect rearing among the five diet treatments. Based on this study, we concluded that adding BSG to wheat bran helps to improve the quality of T. molitor and to reduce the rearing period.

Tenebrio molitor is a major pest of stored grain, although its larvae have potential for use as food. However, little is known about the characteristics of individual larval instars of this species, and the number of instars remains disputed. Therefore, we assessed T. molitor for the average number of instars and its characteristics at different larval stages. The focus of this study was to establish a foundation for further studies on the characteristics of each larval instar. All of the T. molitor larvae showed incubation periods of 7 to 8 d and a period of 3 to 4 d for the $1^{st}$ instar. Beyond the $1^{st}$ instar, there were relatively large variations in the number of days in each instar period. Before emergence, most of the larvae had typically gone through 15 to 17 instars. The highest rate of pupae formation, 28.32%, was observed in the $17^{th}$ instars. The body length gradually increased with each successive instar, reaching its maximum at the 17th instar. Beyond the $17^{th}$ instar, however, the body length decreased. The larvae were white in the first instar, and gradually turned brown after the $2^{nd}$ instar.
Fabrea salina is an euryhaline ciliate living at salt pond. Its size is small as ca. $150{\mu}m$, and its reproductive rate is high, so that this ciliate has been expected to be a new food organism which will be able to replace rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis. However, the dietary value of F. salina on fish larvae has not yet been verified thoroughly. This research was carried out to understand the mass culture technique and dietary value of this ciliate. In this study, six kinds of phytoplankton and three kinds of grain were tested on growth of the ciliate and optimum temperature, salinity and density of food were also examined for its mass culture. Regarding food for the ciliate, Heterosigma sp. and rice showed the highest growth among the phytoplankton and the grain, respectively. In this study, 229 ciliates per mL was cultured with Heterosigma sp., and 220 ciliates per mL with rice. The optimum temperature for F. salina was $33^{\circ}C$, and salinity ranging from 35 to 95 ppt had no significant difference on its growth. The optimum food density and amount for the ciliate were $5\times10^6$ cells/mL in Heterosigma sp. and 2.8 g/L in rice, respectively. With respect to dietary value of F. salina, six-day-old larvae of ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, fed on the ciliate showed the high mortality over $96\%$ within 3 days, and it was significantly higher than those fed on rotifer. Even though the mass culture of F. salina has been achieved in the study, this ciliate seems to be inadequate as a food organism for fish larvae.
