High level of ${\alpha}-linoenic$ acid was present in P. frutescens Britton var. japonica (67.9%), P. frutescens Britton var, acuta (66.0%), lsodon japonicus (65.2%), l. inflexus (59.0%), l. serra (57.3%), Mosla dianthera (60.9%), Nepeta cataria (58.3%), Agastache rugosa (58.5%) and Elsholtzia ciliata (46.2%), and followed by linoleic acid (11.2-32.1%) and oleic acid (9.3-12.2%). However, linoleic acid was the most predominant component in the total lipids of Clinopodium chinense var. parviflorum (62.4%), Ametystea caerules (82.9%), Leonurus sibricus (60.9%) and Scutellaria baicalensis (63.4%), with very small amounts of ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid (0.4-3.1%). The total lipids of Salvia splendens, Lycopus maackianus and Mosla punctulata also contained linoleic acid of 31.3%, 48.8% and 53.4%, with a considerable amount of ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid of 34.5% 27.0% and 16.7%. Palmitic acid was the major saturated fatty acid in all the oils investigated (4.1-14.2%). 4) Fatty acid profiles of neutral lipids bore a close resemblance to those of total lipids in all the seed oils, but different from those of glycolipids and phospholipids. Fatty acid composition pattern of glycolipids and phospholipids showed a considerably increased level of saturated fatty acids (19.0-66.8%, 17.8-35.2%) mainly composed of palmitic acid and stearic acid, and a noticeable low level of unsaturated fatty acids (41.2-80.9%, 64.7-82.1%) which was ascribed to the decrease in ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid of high ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid seed oils, and in linoleic acid of high linoleic seed oils, compared to that of total lipids and neutral lipids.

  • Sets of sialic acid-containing trisaccharides having different internal and terminal linkages have been synthesized to develop a sensitive method for analysis of the reducing terminal linkage positions. The trisaccharides, sialyl($\alpha$ 2-3)Gal($\beta$ 1-3)GalNAc and sialyl($\alpha$ 2-3)Gal($\beta$ 1-X)GlcNAc where X=3, 4 and 6, were synthesized and examined using electrospray ionization (ESI)-collision induced dissociation (CID) tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). The compounds chosen for this study are related to terminal groups likely to be found on polylactosamine-like glycoproteins and glycolipids which occur on the surface of mammalian cells. The purpose of this study is to develop tandem mass spectrometral methods to determine detailed carbohydrate structures on permethylated or partially methylated oligosaccharides for future applications on biologically active glycoconjugates and to exploit a faster method of synthesizing a series of structural isomeric oligosaccharides to be used for further mass spectrometry and instrumental analysis.

  • Deer horn has been used in oriental medicine and folk remedy. It has had much effects on 'health and tonic efficacy' But this word, 'health and tonic efficacy', is very obscure in modern sense This report attempts to investigate their scientific and objective effects among many papers. The biochemical components of antler are composed of pentoses, hexoses, acid mucopolysaccharides, free and ester fatty acids, glycolipids, phospholipids, prostaglandins, sterols, protein and peptides, free amino acids, minerals, hormones etc. Deer horn extract especially increases body weight gain and feed efficiency, and it stimulates the ability of spermatogenesis of animal. However, a few papers have reported concerning the toxicity and side effects of antler.

  • Biosurfactants produced by Pseudomonas aeroginosa KK-7 were purified and their properties were studied. The bacterial surfactant was seperated into two sorts of biosufactants (Type I, 11) by silica gel column chromatograpgy. On the basis of physiochemical analysis, Type I was found to be mixture of two glycolipids with M.W. 800, and Type II was peptide with M.W. 1300. The Type 11 biosurfactant was compose of glutamic acid, proline, glycine, leucine, histidine. The crude extract was used to dertermine some properties as a surfactant. The biosurfactant had the properties as stronger emulsification agent and a stronger stabilizing agent emulsion than any other surfactants tested.

  • Gaucher disease is a multisystemic disorder arising from a deficient activity of the lysosomal enzyme glucocerebrosidase, which leads to accumulation of glycosylceraide and other glycolipids in the regiculoendothelial system. The characteristics of Gaucher disease are anemia, thrombocytopenia, hepatosplenomegaly, and skeletal disease. Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) has been proven to prevent progressive manifestations of Gaucher disease and effective in improving anemia, thrombocytopenia, bone markers and biomarkers. However, some patient needs still remain unmet because of the inaccessibility of certain sites including brain, bone and various organs. ERT could not Improve the irreversible lesion such as liver fibrosis, hepatopulmonary syndrome, and necrosis or infarction of bone and other organs. Adult patients with Gaucher disease should be screened for longterm complication such as bone disease, pulmonary hypertension, gallstone, and cancer, especially in patients with splenectomy. Parkinsonism and polyneuropathy was also reported among patients with type 1 Gaucher disease, but ERT does not improve neurological function. We need to review the benefits and unmet needs of ERT in Gaucher disease.

  • Lipids were extracted from marine rotifer, Brachionus rotundiformis in order to examine the functionality of lipid enzymatic modification. The fatty acids, palmitic, linoleic, oleic and stearic acids were the dominant forms accounting for approximately 35.8%, 21.5%, 15.9% and 7.7% of the total lipid content, respectively. Lipid fractions were categorized as neutral lipids (38.5%), glycolipids (45.9%) and phospholipids (17.6%), and after extraction from the rotifer were isolated by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) as free fatty acids (FFA), monoacylglycerol (MAG), diacylglycerol (DAG) and triacylglycerol (TAG). The production of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) concentrate from rotifer lipids was studied using lipase-catalyzed hydrolysis. In addition, rotifer lipids were modified by hydrolysis using lipases such as porcine pancreas, Candida rugosa and Rhizomucor miehei. The lipase from Rhizomucor miehei was effective in extracting linoleic acid (C 18:2), while the lipase from Candida rugosa was effective in palmitic acid (C16:0) extraction.
