The aim of the study is to compare the fluoride release and recharge properties of glass ionomer cements and 'alkasite'. Specimens of two glass ionomer cements (Fuji IX GP and Riva Self Cure), 'alkasite' restorative material (Cention N) and composite resin (Filtek™ Z350XT) were prepared. The fluoride release of each specimen was measured for 28 days. Thereafter, 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel was applied to experimental groups. No treatment was performed on control groups. The fluoride release was measured for additional 7 days to evaluate the fluoride recharge properties of each materials. The fluoride release was highest in Riva Self Cure, followed by Fuji IX GP, Cention N (p < 0.05). Fluoride release of Cention N was measured to be approximately 49% of Fuji IX GP's. After the application of 1.23% APF gel, increases in fluoride release were observed in Riva Self Cure, Fuji IX GP and Cention N (p < 0.05). Fluoride recharge was observed in Cention N as well as in glass ionomer cements. Further studies are required to evaluate the anti-cariogenic properties of Cention N at clinical conditions.

The resin modified glass ionomer cements(RMGICs) have been used for years since 1989. Recently it has been developed for luting of fixed restorations. To evaluate the bond strength and marginal leakage of RMGICs for luting usage, the 80 extracted human molars which had uniform area of exposed dentin were cemented with 3 types of RMGICs(Fuji Duet, Advance, Vitremer), a conventional Glass Ionomer Cement(GIC-Fuji I), and a resin cement (Panavia 21) to base metal alloy(Ni-Cr-Be). After thermocycling the specimens were immersed in basic fuschin dye for measuring marginal leakage. The shear bond strength was measured with Instron and the maximum dye penetration was measured to 0.1mm. The types of fractured patterns were determined with stereoscope(${\times}7.5$). The results are as follows. 1. The difference between 3 RMGICs and a conventional GIC in shear bond strength was not statistically significant. It seemed that RMGICs had lower shear bond strength than resin cement. (p<0.01) 2. The mean scores of marginal leakage had no significant difference between the resin cement and 3 RMGICs but it was much higher in conventional GIC than the RMGICs (p<0.05) 3. It was determined that the manufacturer and the methods of dentin pretreatment determined the pattern of fracture surfaces and the frequency of adhesive failure between teeth and 3 RMGICs standed as in following order - Vitremer, Advance, Fuji Duet. (p<0. 01) When the fracture pattern was analyzed, it could be said that the materials and the method of dentin pretreatment have much effect on bonding states. This means that the dentin bonding agents should be improved. But the limited products in this experiment can not evaluate the physical properties of the entire RMGICs. Therefore a further study which can evaluate various RMGICs should be in progress to develope better cements.
Objectives: This study evaluated the effects of a bleaching agent on the composition, mechanical properties, and surface topography of 6 conventional glass-ionomer cements (GICs) and one resin-modified GIC. Materials and Methods: For 3 days, the specimens were subjected to three 20-minute applications of a 37% $H_2O_2$-based bleaching agent and evaluated for water uptake (WTK), weight loss (WL), compressive strength (CS), and Knoop hardness number (KHN). Changes in surface topography and chemical element distribution were also analyzed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. For statistical evaluation, the Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon paired tests (${\alpha}=0.05$) were used to evaluate WTK and WL. CS specimens were subjected to 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey post hoc test (${\alpha}=0.05$), and KH was evaluated by one-way ANOVA, the Holm-Sidak post hoc test (${\alpha}=0.05$), and the t-test for independent samples (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: The bleaching agent increased the WTK of Maxxion R, but did not affect the WL of any GICs. It had various effects on the CS, KHN, surface topography, and the chemical element distribution of the GICs. Conclusions: The bleaching agent with 37% $H_2O_2$ affected the mechanical and surface properties of GICs. The extent of the changes seemed to be dependent on exposure time and cement composition.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength on dentin of bonding agents based on glass ionomer cements, and to establish the appropriate method of bonding which has biological safety and decrease the pulpal damage. Fuji Bond LC, Advance, All Bond 2 and Scotchbond Multipurpose were applicated on occlusal dentin layer in acrylic resin block. Each group was composed of 10 specimens and the shear bond strenth between dentin layer and composite resin was measured with the Universal Testing Machine and analyzed. The result were as follows: 1. When using ANOVA and Scheffe' s multiple range test, there were not statistical differences among the four group. (P < 0.05) 2. The shear bond strength was high in the order of C, D, A. B and bond strength of group B showed relatively lower. 3. In digital image processing, there were not significant differences on morphology of failure surface.
This study was designed to evaluate the anti cariogenic effect of F in primers, bonding agents, composite resins or glass ionomer cements in enamel. Twenty-five extracted teeth were selected and a cavity was prepared on either the buccal or the lingual surface of each tooth. After pumicing and etching, the samples were divided into 5 groups. In group A, the samples were primed, bonded and filled with ART bond and Brilliant Enamel (Coltene, Switzerland). Group B composed of Optibond and Herculited XRV (Kerr, USA), group C composed of Syntac and Tetric(Vivadent, Lichtenstein), and group D composed of Scotch-bond Multipurpose and Z 100 (3M, YSA). In group E, the samples were filled with glass ionomer cement (Fuji II LC, Japan), All surfaces except the 2mm beyond the cavosurface margin of the sample were protected, and samples were then put into an acid buffer for 3 days to develop the initial caries. The samples were then sectioned through the filling body into thin wafers and then examined with a polarizing microscope under water imbibition. The fluoride in primer, bonding agent, or composite filling material did not prevent the initial caries in the enamel area adjacent to the filling body whereas the fluoride in the glass ionomer did prevent the initial stage caries.

This in vitro study compared the remineralization of incipient interproximal caries in the presence of three glass ionomer cements (highly-filled glass ionomer cement, compomer, resin-modified glass ionomer cement) and a resin composite(control). The long-term changes in remineralization caused by each material were evaluated by microtomography. Proximal restoration was simulated by placing tooth specimens and the various glass ionomer cements in closed containers with artificial saliva at $37^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.0 for 30 days with constant circulation Tomographic images were obtained with a micro CT scanner at 90, 180, and 270 days, and density-measuring software was used to calculate the micro-density of artificial caries lesions in the specimens. The mean density changes were compared between groups in order to evaluate the effects of remineralization. All data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and the post-HOC Tukey multiple comparison test at p<0.05. While the density of artificial caries lesions increased for all treatments, the increases for the three glass ionomer groups were significantly higher than that for the resin group in each three month period. As time went on, the amount of density increase of the glass ionomer groups decreased, and significant differences were found between the remineralization effects of the glass ionomer groups.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the adaptability to tooth structure of light-cured glass ionomer cements. In this, study, class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surfaces of thirty extracted human premolar teeth, and they were randomly assigned into 3 groups with 10 teeth. The cavities of each groups were filled with the Fuji II LC(GC International Corp., Japan), Vitremer(3M Dental Products Division, U.S.A) and VariGlass VLC(Caulk/Dentsply Inc., U.S.A.). The specimens were immersed in 1% methylene blue solution and stored in 100% realtive humidity at $37^{\circ}C$ for 5 days. And then, the specimens sectioned buccolingually. Degree of eke penetration at tooth--restoration interfaces were examined by magnifying glass at occlusal and gingival margin. The results were as follows : 1. On the occlusal margin, among the experimental groups, the group 2 showed the lowest microleakage($1.40{\pm}1.17$) and the group 1 showed the highest microleakage($3.10{\pm}0.99$). There was significant difference between group 1 and group 2(P<0.01). 2. On the gingival margin, among the experimental groups, the group 2 showed the lowest microleakage($2.50{\pm}1.08$) and the group 1 showed the highest microleakage($3.50{\pm}0.84$). But there was not significant. difference among the experimental groups(P>0.05). 3. The degree of microleakage at occlusal margin was less than gingival margin in all experimental groups.

The purpose of this study was to asses the shear bond strengths of 3 types of light-curing Glass Ionomer cement to dental amalgam with or without an intermediary agent. 60 amalgam adherent specimens were prepared and aged in water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 3 days. Before bonding, the amalgam surfaces were finished flat on 600-grit silicon carbide paper. 30 specimens among 60 were used for bonding in this condition, and the other 30 were covered with a thin layer of light-curing intermediary agent. Shear bond strengths were measured with universal testing machine (Instron, Model 4301) and statistically processed by ANOVA and t-test. On completion of bond test, the fracture surfaces were examined under light microscope so that the mode of bond failure could be assessed The results were as follows : 1. Bond strength of Fuji II LC group showed the hightest value and was followed by Vitremer, Vitrebond groups (p<0.05). 2. The bond strengths achieved without an intermediary agent were higher than those obtained with intermediary agent (p<0.05). 3. For the specimens bonded with intermediary agent, bond failures occured mostly at the agent-amalgam interface. So, the use of intermediary bonding agent was thought not recommendable at glass ionomer-amalgam interface.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate for the cytotoxicity of glass-ionomer cement liners(GC liningcement, Ketac-bond, Vitrebond and Fuji lining LC) on the fibroblasts cultured from human pulp. The fibroblasts were cultured in DMEM-10% FBS medium. The measurement of pH, succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity test and $^{51}Chromium$ release test were performed. Viable cell count and $^{14}C$-leucine incorporation rate were evaluated following culture time of 2, 4 and 6 days. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The pH in all cements was to be neutralized as time elapsed, and Fuji lining LC was the lowest pH value among them. 2. SDH activity was more inhibited in GC lining cement and Vitrebond than Ketac-bond and Fuji lining LC with the setting process, and GC lining cement and Ketac-bond were reduced after 5 minute's setting and then elevated as time elapsed. 3. In SDH activity test following exposure time, the activity in Vitrebond, GC lining cement and Fuji lining LC was inhibited with increased exposure time, but it was fairly constant in Ketac-bond. 4. Overall the liquid component was more inhibited than the powder component of glass-ionomer cement in SDH activity test. 5. In $^{51}Cr$-release test, Fuji lining LC was the most released of all the cements tested and followed by : Vitrebond, Ketac-bond, GC lining cement. 6. In viable cell count, the number of cells increased as the culture day proceeded in Ketac-bond, but they decreased in GC lining cement. Fuji lining LC was only observed after 2 days culture and there was not observed the whole culture days in Vitrebond. 7. In $^{14}C$-leucine incorporation rate test, protein synthesis was decreased with the number of culture days in GC lining cement, Vitrebond and Fuji lining LC, but it was followed that of control in Ketacbond.
The shade of restorative materials is very important for successful restoration esthetically harmonized with the natural tooth. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the color stability and the opacity change of conventional chemical setting and visible light curing glass-ionomer cements for restorative esthetic filling. Specimens of each brand (GC Fuji II and Fuji II LC) were uniformly prepared and divided into three groups: In group l(control group), the specimens received no surface treatment; in group 2, the specimens were coated with varnish and the excess gently blown off; and in group 3. the specimens were coated with light-cured bonding resin and irradiated by a visible light curing unit for 20 seconds on both sides. All specimens were stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ and checked after for 24 hours. 2 months. 4 months, 6 months. and 8 months. The color characteristics($L^*,\;a^*,\;b^*$) and the opacity(Y%) of all the samples were measured by a spectrocolorimeter and the total color differences(${\Delta}E^*$) and opacity changes(${\Delta}Y%$) were computed. The following results were obtained : 1. The total tolor differences in all groups increased with time. 2. The total color differences of the LC groups after immersion for 8 months in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ were lower than those of GC groups(p<0.01), and the total color differences of the varnish or the light-cured bonding resin coated groups were lower than those of the control group with glass-ionomer cements which had no surface treatment(p<0.01). 3. In all groups the translucency decreased with time. 4. In the control group and the varnish coating group. the opacity changes of the GC groups were lower than those of the LC groups(p<0.01) and in the light-cured bonding resin coated group, there was no significant difference between the GC group and the LC group. 5. The opacity changes of the varnish or the light-cured bonding resin coated groups were lower than those of the control group(p<0.01). These results suggest that color change and opacity of conventional chemical setting and light cured glass-ionomer cement were increased with time, and the color changes and the opacity changes of a control group after immersion for 8 months in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ were greater than those of the varnish or the light-cured bonding resin coated groups.
