Recently, Application of composite materials are increased in transport area for weight reduction. Also, Related technical developments have been implemented actively at domestic and abroad. In particular, The carbon fiber has high strength and ultra light property higher than stainless steel, aluminum, GFRP as Eco-friendly material. Carbon fiber contribute to improving the environmental effect such as fuel saving, expansion of loadage, reducing the exhaustion of carbon dioxide through the weight reduction of transport area. In addition, The carbon fiber is applied to the ship in the area of race yacht, luxury cruise boat as weight reduction and high added-value materials, but there is limited application for general boat because price of carbon fiber is very expensive. For the weight reduction of general boat hull, being used as structure materials, glass fiber and carbon fiber are applied to hull with form of hybrid composite materials, but application of domestic and research for development are incomlete. In this study, An evaluations of mechanical strength property and fatigue strength are performed on composite materials by hybrid weaving of glass fiber and carbon fiber and composite materials forming method by hybrid forming.

Tensile strength of the woven glass fiber reinforced PET (Poly-Ethylene-Terephthalate) matrix composite manufactured by rapid press consolidation technique was investigated and evaluated. During pre-heating, consolidation and solidification stages, the optimal manufacturing conditions for this composite were discussed based on the void content and tensile properties depending on vacuum condition. It is found that the effect of vacuum condition during preheating gives a substantial difference on the strength as well as microstructure. It is also found that the failure micromechanism shows several energy absorption processes enhancing fracture toughness.

Glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite materials have considerable promise for increased use in low cost high volum applications because of the potential for processing by solid phase forming. However, the forming characteristics of these materials have not been well known. The primary focus of this research is the investigation of the bendability of these composites and spring-back phenomena in pure bending. The materials tested contained 10, 35, and 40 percent by weight of randomly oriented glass fiber in a polypropylene matrix. The bending tests were performed at temperatures ranging form 75 ".deg. c" to 150 ".deg. c" and at punch speeds of 2.54 mm/sec and 0.0254 mm/sec. The measured bendability and spring back angle in pure bending werw compared with the predictions based on the simple analyical models. Goog agreement between experimental and analytical results was observed.esults was observed.

Multi-layered laminate made of ceramic/composite have been developed to prevent penetration by high velocity impact. In this study, three-layered plates consisted of 1) cover layer (glass fiber reinforced polymer), 2) $Al_{2}O_{3}$, ceramic plate, and 3) backing plate (glass fiber reinforced polymer) were fabricated with various conditions and tested for their ballistic protection characteristic. The ceramic composite laminates, with thin backing plate, were completely penetrated by armor piercing projectile. The plate with inserted rubber between ceramic and backing plate showed excellent ballistic protection, though completely penetrated by the second shoot.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have shown great potential for the reinforcement of polymers or fiber-reinforced composites. In this study, mechanical properties of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT)-filled plain-weave glass/epoxy composites intended for use in radar absorbing structures were evaluated with regard to filler loading, microstructure, and fiber volume fraction. The plain-weave composites containing MWNTs exhibited improved matrix-dominant and interlaminar fracture-related properties, that is, compressive and interlaminar shear strength. This is attributed to strengthening of the matrix rich region and the interface between glass yarns by the MWNTs. However, tensile properties were only slightly affected by the addition of MWNTs, as they are fiber-dominant properties.

Recently, natural fibers draw much interests in composite industry due to low cost, light weight, and environment-friendly characteristics compared with glass fibers. In this study, mechanical properties were evaluated for two extreme cases of jute fiber orientations, i.e. the unidirectional yarn composites and the felt fabric composites. Samples of jute fiber composites were fabricated by RTM process using epoxy resin, and tensile, compression, and shear tests were conducted. As can be expected, unidirectional fiber specimens in longitudinal direction showed the highest strength and modulus. Compared with glass/epoxy composites of the similar fabric architecture and fiber volume fraction, the tensile strength and modulus of jute felt/epoxy composites reached only 40% and 50% levels. However, the specific tensile strength and modulus increased to 80% and 90% of the glass/epoxy composites. The main reason for the poor mechanical properties of jute composites is associated with the weak interfacial bonding between fiber and matrix. The effect of surface treatment of jute fibers on the interfacial bonding will be examined in the future work.
In this study, to improve bending strength performance of Korean white pine, we made the curved composite glulam that was reinforced with glass fiber materials and larch lamina. Five types of Korean white pine curved glulams were made depending on whether they had been reinforced or not and how they had been reinforced. Type-A, reference specimen, was produced only with Korean white pine lamina, and Type-B was with larch lamina in the same thickness. Type-C was made by inserting a glass fiber cloth of textile shape between the each layer. Type-D was reinforced with two glass fiber cloths, which were placed inside and outside of the outermost lamina. Type-E was reinforced with GFRP sheet in the same way as Type-D. As a result of this bending strength test, the modulus of rupture (MOR) of Type-B, Type-C and Type-E were increased by 29%, 6%, and 48% in comparison with Type-A. However, MOR of Type-D was decreased by 2% in comparison with Type-A. In the failure modes, Type-A, Type-B and Type-C were totally fractured at the maximum load. However, load values of Type-D and Type-E decreased slowly because of reinforcement of fracture suppression, and the GFRP sheet (Type-E) had better reinforcing effect on compressive stress and tensile stress than the glass fiber cloth (Type-D).

Although the previous researches evaluated the fatigue behavior of glass fiber/epoxy laminates using the traditional fracture mechanism, their researches were not sufficient to do it: the damage zone of glass fiber/epoxy laminates was occurred at the delamination zone instead of the crack-metallic damages. Thus, previous researches were not applicable to the fatigue behavior of glass fiber/epoxy laminates. The major purpose of this study was to evaluate delamination behavior using the relationship between crack length and delamination width in hybrid composite material such as Al/GFRP laminate. The details of investigation were as follows : 1) Relationship between crack length and delamination width, 2) Relationship between delamination aspect ratio and delamination area rate, 3) Variation of delamination growth rate is attendant on delamination shape factors. The test results indicated that the delamination growth rate depends on delamination width delamination aspect ratio and delamination shape factors.
Sheet molding compound (SMC) is one of the most economical fiber reinforced composite fabrication processing for automotive applications. In this study, we studied the optimum formulation for the production of SMC which shows low specific gravity without lowering the mechanical properties by using glass bubble (GB) which is a low specific gravity filler and glass fiber (GF) as a reinforcing material. The tensile strength increased with the increase of the GF in the SMC, and the specific gravity decreased with the increase of the GB. The synergistic effect of improving the mechanical properties as the specific gravity is lowered is found in the optimum formulation. The synergy effect was confirmed by the internal structure analysis that the dispersion effect of the crack propagation of the GB and the improvement of the binding force between the fiber and the matrix due to the incorporation of the GB.

During the last years hollow core insulators started their success story in the field of high voltage engineering for electrical apparatus, substituting porcelain insulators. The termination, also named top and bottom fittings are used for the connection to the rest of the electrical apparatus. The top and bottom flange are attached to the composite to transmit mechanical load and also ensure the gas tightness. They are bonded by epoxy glue with a glass transition temperature of about $130^{\circ}C$-$150^{\circ}C$ the glass reinforced epoxy tube of filament winding. This paper describes the results of a study on the bonded joints of fiber reinforced epoxy tube and cast aluminum. This suggests that surface roughness and glue types play an important role in evaluating of gas sealing capability on the flange and fiber reinforced epoxy tube in the composite hollow bushing.
