Recently, there is an increasing need for developing the technique of Hand Gesture Recognition (HGR), for vision based interface. Since hand gesture is defined as consecutive change of hand posture, developing the algorithm of Hand Posture Recognition (HPR) is required. Among the factors that decrease the performance of HPR, we focus on rotation factor. To achieve rotation invariant HPR, we propose a method that uses the property of video that adjacent frames in video have high correlation, considering the environment of HGR. The proposed method introduces template update of object tracking using the above mentioned property, which is different from previous works based on still images. To compare our proposed method with previous methods such as template matching, PCA and LBP, we performed experiments with video that has hand rotation. The accuracy rate of the proposed method is 22.7%, 14.5%, 10.7% and 4.3% higher than ordinary template matching, template matching using KL-Transform, PCA and LBP, respectively.

In this paper, we describe gesture recognition algorithm using computer vision sensor and HMM. The automatic hand region extraction has been proposed for initializing the tracking of the tele-operation gestures. For this, distance informations(disparity map) as results of stereo matching of initial left and right images are employed to isolate the hand region from a scene. PDOE(positive difference of edges) feature images adapted here have been found to be robust against noise and background brightness. The KNU/KAERI(K/K) gesture instruction set is defined for tele-operation in atomic electric power stations. The composite recognition model constructed by concatenating three gesture instruction models including pre-orders, basic orders, and post-orders has been proposed and identified by discrete HMM. Our experimental results showed that consecutive orders composed of more than two ones are correctly recognized at the rate of above 97%.
As virtual realty has become an issue of providing immersive services, in the area of virtual realty, it has been actively investigated to develop user interfaces for immersive interaction. In this paper, we propose a gesture recognition based immersive user interface by using an IR LED embedded helmet and data gloves in order to reflect the user's movements to the virtual reality environments effectively. The system recognizes the user's head movements by using the IR LED embedded helmet and IR signal transmitter, and the hand gestures with the data gathered from data gloves. In case of hand gestures recognition, it is difficult to recognize accurately with the general recognition model because there are various hand gestures since human hands consist of many articulations and users have different hand sizes and hand movements. In this paper, we applied the Mixture-of-Experts based gesture recognition for various hand gestures of multiple users accurately. The movement of the user's head is used to change the perspection in the virtual environment matching to the movement in the real world, and the gesture of the user's hand can be used as inputs in the virtual environment. A head mounted display (HMD) can be used with the proposed system to make the user absorbed in the virtual environment. In order to evaluate the usefulness of the proposed interface, we developed an interface for the virtual orchestra environment. The experiment verified that the user can use the system easily and intuituvely with being entertained.
Gesture recognitions needed for various applications and is now gaining in importance as one method of enabling natural and intuitive human machine communication. In this paper, we propose a real time hand-signal recognition system in 3-dimensional space performs robust, real-time tracking under varying illumination. As compared with the existing method using classical pattern matching, this system is efficient with respect to speed and also presents more systematic way of defining hand-signals and developing a hand-signal recognition system. In order to verify the proposed method, we developed a virtual driving system operated by hand-signals.

Generally, when we apply zernike moments value for matching, we can use those moments value obtained from projecting image information under circumscribed circle to zernike basis function. However, the problem is that the power of discrimination can be reduced because hand images include lots of overlapped information due to its special characteristic. On the other hand, when distinguishing hand poses, information in specific area of image information except for overlapped information can increase the power of discrimination. In this paper, in order to solve problems like those, we design R3 ring mask by combining image obtained from R2 ring mask, which can weight information of the power of discrimination and image obtained from R1 ring mask, which eliminate the overlapped information. The moments which are obtained by R3 ring mask decrease operational time by reducing dimension through principle component analysis. In order to confirm the superiority of the suggested method, we conducted some experiments by comparing our method to other method using seven different hand poses.
In this paper we propose a new robust method to extract accurate human silhouettes indoors with active stereo camera. A prime application is for gesture recognition of mobile robots. The segmentation of distant moving objects includes many problems such as low resolution, shadows, poor stereo matching information and instabilities of the object and background color distributions. There are many object segmentation methods based on color or stereo information but they alone are prone to failure. Here efficient color, stereo and image segmentation methods are fused to infer object and background areas of high confidence. Then the inferred areas are incorporated in graph cut to make human silhouette extraction robust and accurate. Some experimental results are presented with image sequences taken using pan-tilt stereo camera. Our proposed algorithms are evaluated with respect to ground truth data and proved to outperform some methods based on either color/stereo or color/contrast alone.
Tracking hands is an essential technique for hand gesture recognition which is an efficient way in Human Computer Interaction (HCI). Recently, many researchers have focused on hands tracking using a 3D hand model and showed robust tracking results compared to using 2D hand models. In this paper, we propose a novel 3D hand tracking method based on a coupled particle filter. This provides robust and fast tracking results by estimating each part of global hand poses and local finger motions separately and then utilizing the estimated results as a prior for each other. Furthermore, in order to improve the robustness, we apply a multi-cue based method by integrating a color-based area matching method and an edge-based distance matching method. In our experiments, the proposed method showed robust tracking results for complex hand motions in a cluttered background.
The purpose of this study is to examine the style of Marlene Dietrich who was a Hollywood legend in 1930s and has influenced on modern fashion. The characteristics of Dietrich style showed androgyny, sensualism and exoticism. Dietrich has been famous for wearing tailored pantsuit on and off-screen with mannish gesture and had great effect on women's wearing pants. Her confident, sexy mannish style represented her androgyny glamourously and proved she had a taste for a classic. Her sensualism focused on her famous legs because she understood the sex appeal of woman's legs. She showed her legs by wearing pants and decorative stockings, or matching colors of stockings and shoes to make her legs look longer and sexier by illusion. Her exoticism against a backdrop of black and white image, was presented with luxurious, sensual fabrics such as furs, feathers and velvet, along with dazzling accessaries. Also she didn't forget to manipulate angles of camera and lights for the engraving figure of her own. Her charisma directed her fashion image in detail and made herself a fashion icon in 1930s.
Interactive Typography is a process where a user communicates by interacting with text and a moving factor. This research covers interactive typography using real-time response to a user's gesture. In order to form a language-independent system, preprocessing of entered text data presents image data. This preprocessing is followed by recognizing the image data and the setting interaction points. This is done using computer vision technology such as the Harris corner detector and contour detection. User interaction is achieved using skeleton information tracked by a depth camera. By synchronizing the user's skeleton information acquired by Kinect (a depth camera,) and the typography components (interaction points), all user gestures are linked with the typography in real time. An experiment was conducted, in both English and Korean, where users showed an 81% satisfaction level using an interactive typography system where text components showed discrete movements in accordance with the users' gestures. Through this experiment, it was possible to ascertain that sensibility varied depending on the size and the speed of the text and interactive alteration. The results show that interactive typography can potentially be an accurate communication tool, and not merely a uniform text transmission system.
Recently, high-performance HMDs (Head-Mounted Display) are becoming wireless due to the growth of virtual reality technology. Accordingly, environmental constraints on the hardware usage are reduced, enabling multiple users to experience virtual reality within a single space simultaneously. Existing multi-user virtual reality platforms use the user's location tracking and motion sensing technology based on vision sensors and active markers. However, there is a decrease in immersion due to the problem of overlapping markers or frequent matching errors due to the reflected light. Goal of this study is to develop a multi-user virtual reality moving platform in a single space that can resolve sensing errors and user immersion decrease. In order to achieve this goal hybrid sensing technology was developed, which is the convergence of vision sensor technology for position tracking, IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) sensor motion capture technology and gesture recognition technology based on smart gloves. In addition, integrated safety operation system was developed which does not decrease the immersion but ensures the safety of the users and supports multimodal feedback. A 6 m×6 m×2.4 m test bed was configured to verify the effectiveness of the multi-user virtual reality moving platform for four users.
