Membrane distillation process was used for desalination of hot (333 K) geothermal water, which was applied in the plant producing heating water. The investigated water contained 120 g salts/$dm^3$, mainly NaCl. The mineral composition was studied using an ion chromatography method. The obtained rejection of solutes was closed to 100%, but the small amounts of $NH_3$ also diffused through the membrane together with water vapour. However, the composition of obtained distillate allowed to use it as a makeup water in the heating water system. The geothermal water under study was concentrated from 120 to 286 g NaCl/$dm^3$. This increase in the solution concentration caused the permeate flux decline by a 10-20%. The geothermal water contained sulphates, which was subjected to two-fold concentration to achieve the concentration 2.4-2.6 g $SO{_4}{^{2-}}/dm^3$ and the sulphates then crystallized in the form of calcium sulphate. As a results, an intensive membranes scaling and the permeate flux decline was observed. The XRD analysis indicated that beside the gypsum also the NaCl crystallites were deposited on the membrane surfaces. The fresh geothermal water dissolved the mixed $CaSO_4$ and NaCl deposit from the membrane surface. This property can be utilized for self-cleaning of MD modules. Using a batch feeding of MD installation, the concentration of geothermal water was carried out over 800 h, without significant performance losses.

A magnetotelluric survey and geological survey have been performed to delineate deeply extended fracture systems at the geothermal field in Seokmo Island, Inchon, Korea. One borehole(BH-1) succeed to meet a large fracture system at the depth of 750 m where approximately $72^{\circ}C$ geothermal water is overflowing, while the other borehole(BH-2), which is about 200 m eastward from BH-1, failed to develop enough geothermal water even at the depth of 1,200m. Though there have been so many electric noise sources around the survey region, good quality of MT data above 1 Hz could be obtained with careful installation, remote reference processing. Inversion of MT data for two lines roughly perpendicular to the two major lineaments respectively show that the two lineaments are related to the fracture systems that are extended at least down to 1.5 km depth and inclined eastwards. From the interpretation, additional drilling for BH-2 is recommended and finally meet the fracture systems at the depth of 1,280 m and resulted in overflow of large amount of geothermal water of temperature $69.4^{\circ}C$ from BH-2.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the experimental performance characteristics of a water-to-water geothermal heat pump featuring a vapor refrigerant injection for the production of hot water. The performance of geothermal heat pump with a vapor injection was evaluated by comparing with that of a conventional geothermal heat pump without a vapor injection. For heating operation, the geothermal heat pump with a vapor injection is superior in COP and heating capacity. The vapor injection was more effective for supplying hot water while overloading. The vapor injection was effective for the improvement of the cooling capacity. However, the vapor injection was not effective for the increasing of COP according to the increased input of a compressor. The advantage of vapor injection in water-to-water geothermal heat pump become disappeared while cooling operation with lower part loading.
Geothermal heat pump systems use the earth as a heat source in heating mode and a heat sink in cooling mode. These systems can be used for heating or cooling systems in farm facilities such as greenhouses for protected horticulture, cattle sheds, mushroom house and etc. A horizontal type means that a geothermal heat exchanger is laid in the trench buried in 1.2 to 1.8 m depth. Because a horizontal type has advantages of low installation, operation and maintenance costs compared to a vertical type, it is easy to be adopted to agriculture. In this study, to heat and cool farm facilities and obtain basic data for practical application of horizontal geothermal heat pump system in agriculture, a horizontal geothermal heat pump system of 10 RT was installed in greenhouse. Heating and cooling performance of this system was estimated. The horizontal geothermal heat pump used in this study had heating COP of 4.57 at soil temperature of $14^{\circ}C$ with depth of 1.75m and heating COP of 3.75 at soil temperature of $7^{\circ}C$ with the same depth. The cooling COP was 2.7 at ground temperature at 1.75m depth of $25.5^{\circ}C$ and 2.0 at the temperature of $33.5^{\circ}C$.

Vertical closed-loop ground source heat pump systems(GSHP) have been installed widely in Korea since it can extract moderate temperature level of geothermal heat in a small area. As a ground heat exchanger, a vertical closed-loop type with brine circulation is mostly preferred since it is simple and less harmful to ground environment. However, it requires a secondary heat exchange loop between the refrigerant in a heat pump and the brine. By adding a geothermal heat exchanger in the secondary heat exchange loop, circulation pumps should be attached and the temperature difference between refrigerant and ground is increased, which are important parts of performance degradation. In this paper, annual and seasonal performances of direct expansion(DX) geothermal heat pump were estimated mathematically as an alternative of classical indirect geothermal heat pump based on the annual performance evaluation. As a result, DX geothermal heat pump showed 43% higher annual performance than the classical U-tube geothermal heat pump.

It is important to control the amount of supply water flow rate at all kinds of HVAC systems in order to maintain IAQ and energy efficiency. The most of buildings installed geothermal heat pumps is using fixed water flow rate in spite of the excellent performance of geothermal heat pumps. Especially when the air-conditioning load is low, the flow rate control may be possible to save energy to operate. However, it is effective to apply the variable flow control system in order to reduce energy consumption. Therefore, the purpose of this study, change a water flow rate and improve the whole performance of the geothermal heat pump. Geothermal heat pump system is modeled after the selection of the applied building, by setting the flow rate control to be analyzed through a simulation of performance evaluation. Building energy saving according to the flow rate of the ground circulating water analyze quantitatively and to investigate the importance of the flow control.
This study evaluates the seasonal performances of the horizontal-type geothermal heat exchanger(HGHEX) installed into the foundation slabs of the complex building located at Seoul. The geothermal system is consisted with totally 31,860m long HGHEX, 16 GSHPs (Ground-source Heat Pump) and 8 circulation pumps. This system supplies cooling and heating to the lobby(F1) and the common spaces(BF1). The average heat exchange temperature differences are $2.7^{\circ}C\;and\;2.5^{\circ}C$ in the summer, $1.5^{\circ}C\;and\;0.5^{\circ}C$ in the winter for the F1 and BF1 respectively. From these results, approximately 400Gcal and 180Gcal of geothermal energy are assumed to have been used during the summer and winter seasons respectively. As a conclusion, the geothermal system is reviewed as a effective utility for heating and cooling at the point of seasonal performances.
To estimate the operating performances of the geothermal heat exchange pipe(GHEX), GHEXs of 400RT geothermal system were measured and analyzed through a year. The followings are the results. The temperature of 2 GHEXs installed 4m apart was fluctuated very similarly. When the geothermal system is nor operating or is operating as heating mode, the temperature of G.L.-170m was always higher than G.L.-70m's. But it reversed when the geothermal system is operating as cooling mode. And through a year, it has been observed that the temperature of G.L.-170m is increased approximately $1.5^{\circ}C$. With previously mentioned results, the heat transfer capacity of G.L.-70m's geological stratum is estimated as higher than that of the G.L.-170m.

Recently, ground source heat pump systems are being used in buildings for cooling and heating to reduce greenhouse gas and save energy. However, ground source heat pump systems mainly use the vertical closed-loop geothermal system design rather than the open-loop geothermal system design. This is due to a lack of knowledge and few research feasibility studies. In this research, a dynamic thermal analysis numerical simulation based on a standard house model was conducted for an open-loop geothermal system. Based on heating load analysis results, the life cycle costs of a standard house using an open two-well geothermal system were analyzed and compared with a vertical closed-loop geothermal system, and a diesel boiler. As a result, it was found that using an open two-well geothermal system shows economic return on investment after three years.
